For New Hampshire families and travelers looking for the perfect blend of rustic nature and resort-style entertainment, the Strafford / Lake Winnipesaukee South KOA Holiday offers an unparalleled destination. Situated on 46 wooded acres in the picturesque Lakes Region, this campground goes far beyond a simple place to pitch a tent or park an RV. It is a full-featured vacation hub designed to keep every member of the family engaged, relaxed, and making lasting memories. The resort’s identity as a 'KOA Holiday' location signifies a commitment to generous amenities and a structured, fun-filled activity schedule, making it a reliable and consistently clean choice for local residents seeking an effortless escape.
The grounds are widely praised for their exceptional cleanliness and well-kept appearance, with sites often described as nicely spread apart, offering a greater sense of privacy than many corporate-style parks. The variety of accommodations, ranging from spacious RV sites with full hookups and deluxe patios to cozy tent sites and premium cabins or tiny mobile homes, ensures there is an option for every camping preference.
However, potential visitors, especially those local to New Hampshire, should be aware of a few structural policies that deviate from a traditional "hometown" camping experience. This KOA operates with a clear "pay to play" model, which includes various add-on charges. Reviews highlight that the total price can feel steep due to extra costs like "resort fees" and dog fees, the latter being notably high for some. Furthermore, the campground strictly enforces a policy prohibiting outside firewood, even if kiln-dried, requiring all wood to be purchased on-site—a point of contention for many traditional campers who view this as a purely profit-driven mandate rather than a genuine environmental concern. The campground also charges an additional fee for guests wishing to choose a vacant site rather than accepting the one automatically assigned, further solidifying the corporate pricing structure. Finally, while pets are welcome (with required vaccination paperwork), key family activities and event areas are designated as dog-free, which can force a family to split up during peak fun times, slightly undermining the "dog-friendly" claim for owners who wish to remain together.
Despite these pricing and policy challenges, the sheer volume and quality of the amenities, coupled with the central New Hampshire location, continue to make this a sought-after family destination. The focus here is on modern convenience and organized recreation, ensuring that a stay is more than just camping—it’s a fully planned family vacation.

We won a 1 night stay on the Facebook page! So we ended up booking a cabin which required a 2 night stay so totally fine. We thought we booked a regular cabin but it was one of their tiny mobile homes, for the price it is steep, but thankfully we had the one night free. It's easily one of the cleanest campgrounds I have ever been too. We are big K.O.A fan's and this one is the best one i have visited. I felt as if the sites were nicely spread apart! The only downfall is definitely pricing through out. Between paying extra for resort fees and the dog fee was the most I have ever paid for, but I would love to come back if the price is right!
Sep 22, 2025 · Katrina RollinsI am extremely disappointed in KOA. I would think that a business that has America in it's name would have some pride in our country. When I arrived I found a gigantic KOA flag, on the same pole as a tiny tattered American flag, completely overshadowing it. Although flag etiquette is not law, anything that goes against it actually disrespects the flag. Additionally they have no lights illuminating the flag at night and they leave it flying all night. The grounds were nice and well kept. Nice enough amenities, no real complaints there. My biggest complaint is the corporate greed and "pay for to play" feel of this place. They don't allow outside firewood even if you bring your own kiln dried they make you buy theirs. Their excuse is it's bad for the environment but we know they just are greedy. Prices are fairly high for a normal tent site and if you don't like your site and want to choose a vacant site they charge you a nightly fee. This does not feel like a hometown campground but more like a trip on spirit airlines. Last thing is they do have fun activities but they all take place in an outdoor area that dogs are not allowed. Dog friendly sure but you and your family will be split up one parent with the dog and the other with the kids.
Aug 31, 2025 · Daniel BarthelemyVery nice campground! ALL staff are so very friendly and helpful! There is so much to offer here! It’s kid friendly but it’s also very quiet for those who don’t. Lots of fun activities…every week the office gives out a flyer. My kids would have LOVED this campground when they were young. Lots of shade! Well maintained park. From what I can see most sites are fairly level. I know there are people who don’t like rules, but they are in place for a reason. Bring your fishing poles…catch and release pond. They also have paddle boats & boards and golf carts for rent. Also a nice game room and laundry. Have a look on their website for all the camping accommodations as they have many. I definitely recommend this campground!
Aug 19, 2025 · Janis BuckThis is our 3rd and last year here. It’s a nice campground, albeit a bit pricey and certainly not the resort they add an $11.99/night fee for. The staff, however, is another story. Rude is being polite. They drive around the campground in their golf carts and yellow t-shirts looking for anything they consider to be out of place. Last night they descended on our campsite like a SWAT team because there was an extra car parked there. We’re from out of state and family came to visit. The staff not only insisted that our grandsons move their cars to overflow parking, even though there was plenty of room, they proceeded to follow them and monitor their every move. The boys were forced to park outside of the campground and then had to pay $10 each to walk back to our site. So much for a peaceful family visit. Definitely never coming back here again. Update to campground response … Think you’re respectful all you want but the staff has been nothing but rude and disrespectful since the moment we checked in. What we experienced last night was harassment, plain and simple. The situation could have and should have been handled much differently.
Jun 21, 2025 · Deb MacLeanStaff was very friendly and kind. Campground sites all in the woods and roomy. There is something for every kind of stay. The pond is clean and there are peddle boats, paddle boards, kayaks, row boats...swimming area is perfect for smaller kids, sand is really nice. Pool is good sized, slide was down while we were there but they made up for it in other ways. Everything was clean, stores and food close by. Lake Winny about 30min away. 5/5 will definitely visit again.
