For those of us in Michigan, the Upper Peninsula holds a special place in our hearts – a vast expanse of natural beauty, pristine waters, and iconic landmarks. Among its many treasures, Tahquamenon Falls State Park stands out, and its Rivermouth Campgrounds offer an unparalleled opportunity to immerse ourselves in this magnificent environment. It's a place where the majestic Tahquamenon River flows gently, offering "a slow moving river for kayaking" and picturesque campsites that promise tranquility and adventure in equal measure.
The Rivermouth Campgrounds are not just a place to set up camp; they are a gateway to exploring one of Michigan's most beloved natural wonders, the Tahquamenon Falls, just a short drive away. This campground truly embodies the spirit of Michigan's state parks, providing a family-friendly atmosphere with essential amenities. As one happy camper noted, "This is a very family friendly site." While the U.P. wilderness requires a certain level of preparedness, the comforts provided, including "fantastic bathrooms (and showers)," ensure that even those who prefer modern conveniences can enjoy the rustic charm of the surroundings. It's the perfect blend of natural beauty and thoughtful provisions, making it an ideal choice for any Michigander seeking an unforgettable outdoor experience.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park Rivermouth Campgrounds offer a highly sought-after camping experience within one of Michigan's most iconic natural attractions. Located in Paradise, Michigan, these campgrounds provide an exceptional base for exploring the famous Tahquamenon Falls – both the Upper and Lower Falls – and the vast wilderness of the eastern Upper Peninsula. The campground is situated on the tranquil Tahquamenon River, creating a "picturesque campsite" setting that is ideal for water activities like kayaking and canoeing.
Operated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Rivermouth Campgrounds are designed to cater to a variety of camping styles, from rustic tent sites to more modern RV accommodations. Visitors consistently praise the family-friendly atmosphere and the quality of the facilities. The park maintains "fantastic bathrooms (and showers)," a welcome comfort in a natural setting. Despite being in a wild environment, the campground aims to provide a comfortable and accessible experience, allowing campers to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of the U.P. while having essential conveniences close at hand. It's a destination that balances the rugged appeal of the wilderness with the amenities necessary for a comfortable family getaway.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park Rivermouth Campgrounds are strategically located at 32130 W South River Rd, Paradise, MI 49768, USA. This address places the campgrounds directly on the Tahquamenon River, just a short distance from where it empties into Lake Superior. The picturesque setting, with a "slow moving river for kayaking," is a significant highlight, offering direct water access for recreational activities.
Accessibility to the campgrounds is generally straightforward, primarily via well-maintained state and county roads. Paradise, Michigan, serves as the nearest town, providing limited services, but the main draw is the park's proximity to its namesake attraction. The Rivermouth Campgrounds are notably closer to the Lower Falls area of Tahquamenon Falls State Park, which is often a hub of activity with its concessions, boat rentals, and the well-known "firewood vending machine" that one camper mentioned for convenience, even if discovered late. The Upper Falls, a more powerful and awe-inspiring cascade, is a short drive further into the park.
For campers arriving with RVs or trailers, the roads within the park and leading to the campgrounds are designed to accommodate such vehicles. The campground itself offers various site types, including those suitable for RVs. While some areas might be quieter, particularly the "non-RV half of the site," the overall accessibility ensures a smooth arrival for most campers. It's important for visitors to note that while the park is well-managed, being in a natural area means being prepared for typical outdoor conditions, such as insects, hence the advice to "Bring bug spray for sure." The remote yet accessible nature of the location allows for a genuine wilderness experience without being entirely cut off from amenities.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park Rivermouth Campgrounds provide a range of services designed to make camping in this beautiful Michigan wilderness both enjoyable and comfortable. As a Michigan State Park, these services adhere to DNR standards, ensuring essential amenities are available.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park Rivermouth Campgrounds offer a wealth of natural features and highlights that make it an exceptional destination for campers in Michigan:
As Tahquamenon Falls State Park Rivermouth Campgrounds are managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), direct commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the traditional private business sense are not typically offered. The fee structure for state park camping is standardized across the park system.
However, Michigan residents can significantly benefit from the Michigan Recreation Passport. This annual pass, purchased for a modest fee when you renew your license plate, provides vehicle access to all Michigan state parks and recreation areas for an entire year. For anyone planning to visit multiple state parks or make several trips to Tahquamenon Falls within a year, the Recreation Passport offers substantial savings on entry fees and essentially acts as the primary "promotion" for access.
Camping fees themselves are set by the DNR. Current pricing for campsites typically varies based on whether they have electrical hookups (modern sites) or are rustic (no hookups). While specific discounts are not usually offered on the nightly rate, certain groups may be eligible for reduced fees, such as seniors or individuals with disabilities, through specific state park programs or passes. It is always best to check the official Michigan DNR website (Michigan.gov/DNR) or Recreation.gov (where reservations are made) for the most up-to-date information on fees, any specific program benefits, or potential seasonal variations.
While not a direct campground promotion, visitors should be aware of the "24hour firewood vending machine in the lower falls parking" area of Tahquamenon Falls State Park. This convenient service, as noted by a reviewer, can save campers a drive to find firewood, even if they aren't directly at the Rivermouth Campgrounds.

Incredibly picturesque campsite, with a slow moving river for kayaking. It can be quiet on the non-RV half of the site. This place has fantastic bathrooms (and showers) if you don't want to use the vaults. Bring bug spray for sure. This is a very family friendly site.
Jul 26, 2024 · Tom FifeThe only thing I was upset about, was nobody was there for us to buy firewood, and we didn't know where to get it at 9pm... Because all the little stores were closed.. we had no idea there is a 24hour firewood vending machine in the lower falls parking (Tahquamenon falls) ... So we drove 40 mins to Newberry, because they had a gas station open until midnight there.. but we didn't see anybody in the little camping office, all weekend we were there! If nobody is going to be there, and y'all are too scared to have the wood unlocked with a money drop box, maybe y'all should get one of them firewood vending machines!!! But, we had a beautiful view, a bathroom was close to us, the lot was big, and I appreciated the picnic table and fire pit!
Oct 14, 2024 · Nicole CorzineWent here October 11-15 and absolutely loved it! Was at site 121 in the Rivermouth Pines rustic side. I was right by the vaulted toilet so that made things easy and the drive or walk to the modern side wasn’t bad. Everything was clean and felt safe. The modern bathrooms had handicap accessible showers which I thought was nice. The showers are private which I also like. I never ran out of hot water either and the bathrooms were always clean. Loved that the staff drove through often checking on things and cleaning the bathrooms. The view of the river is amazing. And there are many spots to enjoy the view! Will definitely come again.
Oct 20, 2023 · Sam MasonFantastic campground with ample access to the Tahquamenon River. Great facilities and very walkable area
Jun 06, 2025 · Karl BackhausRustic campgrounds with incredible views right on the river. There are several pit toilets and water stations nearby, but the washrooms and showers are just a quick bike ride away. Beautiful spot for a quiet, up north camping experience.
