For generations of Minnesota families and outdoor adventurers, the name Ely is synonymous with the Northwoods wilderness. Tucked just seven miles outside this legendary town, Timber Trail Resort and Campgrounds offers a unique blend of comfortable accommodations and direct access to the raw beauty of the Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). It is a premier four-season destination, evolving from a simple fishing camp into a full-service resort and outfitter that caters to all levels of outdoor enthusiasm.
Timber Trail Resort is perfectly positioned on the south shore of Farm Lake, part of a stunning chain of four interconnected lakes. This strategic location provides the dual benefit of allowing motorized boating on the lake chain while also serving as a direct gateway for canoeing into the non-motorized tranquility of the BWCAW. Whether you are a dedicated angler seeking the next Walleye dinner, a couple looking for a cozy winter retreat, or a family planning a summer filled with swimming and paddling, Timber Trail provides the ideal basecamp. The resort's philosophy centers on creating memorable experiences, offering modern conveniences alongside genuine wilderness adventure.
Local users in Minnesota appreciate the versatility of Timber Trail. As one recent customer noted, the welcoming atmosphere, accessibility of the owners, and year-round amenities—like a sauna, sledding hill, and polar plunge hole—make it an exceptional choice for everything from romantic winter getaways to lively summer vacations. The consistent praise for staff friendliness and the reliability of the fishing suggests a quality of service that keeps guests returning year after year, building a tradition rooted in the Minnesota resort experience.
The resort and campgrounds are beautifully situated on the Kawishiwi Trail, a scenic route outside of Ely, Minnesota.
The location is a sweet spot for Minnesota travelers: remote enough to feel like a true escape, yet close enough to the amenities of Ely. From the Twin Cities, the drive is a manageable route up Highway 35 to Duluth, then following Highway 53 and Highway 169 into the heart of the Arrowhead Region. The final segment of the journey to the resort is short and well-marked.
Key to the resort’s appeal is its direct relationship with the surrounding waterways. Farm Lake connects to a four-lake chain, allowing guests to explore a considerable area by boat or canoe directly from their dock. Furthermore, this entire lake system provides direct, official access to the BWCAW—a significant convenience for those planning a multi-day wilderness trip, as the resort operates an official BWCAW Permit Station and offers shuttle services. This integration makes Timber Trail a true launch point for both casual lake recreation and serious wilderness exploration.
Timber Trail Resort is a comprehensive four-season destination, offering far more than a typical campground. Its full-service commitment ensures guests have everything necessary for a comfortable and adventurous stay.
What truly sets Timber Trail apart is its unique combination of location-based opportunities and resort-provided activities, making it an excellent destination regardless of the season.

For Minnesota residents, Timber Trail Resort and Campgrounds is more than a vacation spot; it is a cultural touchstone that perfectly encapsulates the state's outdoor heritage. Its suitability for locals stems from its authenticity and convenience. The resort offers the rugged, lake-centered adventure that defines the "Up North" experience, but removes the major logistical headaches. Locals can confidently bring their own boats or rely on the full-service outfitter to hit the water immediately, whether they are trolling for Walleye or paddling into the quiet reaches of the BWCAW.
Furthermore, the resort’s four-season dedication means it respects Minnesota’s deep commitment to winter recreation. The ability to switch from a summer cabin stay to a cozy, heated winter retreat with snowmobile trail and sauna access is a significant advantage over strictly seasonal operations. The friendly, hands-on service noted by guests, where owners proactively assist with needs, reflects the genuine hospitality valued in the Northwoods. Timber Trail is an accessible, reliable, and deeply rooted destination that allows Minnesotans to easily reconnect with the state’s most celebrated wilderness area, year-round, without sacrificing comfort or quality service. It's the ideal spot to start an annual family tradition.
We've been coming up here every winter for a few years for a fun couple's trip. George (the owner who acquired the resort back in May) knocked it out of the park on our most recent visit. He was super accessible with our requests (kindling for an outside fire, warming our cabin prior to arrival, and so many other things) and checked in on us enough to feel supported while not being intrusive. We've stayed at the same cabin each time and love the location and the activities in the surrounding areas as well as the resort itself (sauna, sledding hill, polar plunge hole, etc.). We've done multiple hikes in the area and I included a few photos from our most recent trip. We also brought our puppies and they had a blast, too. Overall, a resounding 5 stars from us and we look forward to visiting again!
Jan 18, 2023 · Adam MorganWe have been staying at the Timber Trail now for 7 years and could not be Happier. The service and friendliness of the staff is outstanding. We go fishing for walleye and northern and some years we do very well! Other years we just have our walleye fresh from the lake dinners. But we always get fish. The cabins are very comfortable and all have great View of the lake
Sep 08, 2019 · Keith PrestonOur first time visiting for a full week with family and friends and it will not be our last. I can't say enough about George(Owner) and his team as they were very attentive to ensuring our stay met our expectations and more. They were available when we had questions, planning activities and scheduling our next adventure. We mostly stayed at the resort due to the many activities available, we enjoyed; renting a pontoon, paddle boarding, kayaking, renting ATVs, Fishing Charter, Swimming and sitting by the fire. The location is perfect as it's extremely close to town, with a bear and wolf observatory. We will be back, and we highly recommend checking this place out!!!! U will not regret it.
Aug 11, 2024 · Bridget BrownCabin was beautiful as always. New owners never bothered 😕 to introduce themselves. The staff was friendly and accommodating as ever even though they were almost all new. Travis was an amazing human helping when my mom had a heart attack on the steps of our cabin ( no fault of the resort) and he kept asking for updates on her health. But the owners never did. We continued to stay through our allotted time because she needed rest - yet no one ( except Travis) bothered to check on her. They also tried to take our pontoon rental earlier despite us paying for that day ( we refused). Mark tried to overcharge us as we left. My son had paid several days ago for kayaks, Mark told my mom that she owed for them. We came back to have him fix the problem and he did. We just no longer get the friendly family feeling here. We won’t be staying here any longer-sad because we have been coming for approximately 18+years. My kids have grown up here ( oldest is 19). So many memories, but it’s become more expensive and too commercial. Owner is booting trailers that have been on site for 40 years. We had gotten to be friends with many of them over the years. Disappointed ☹️
Jul 27, 2022 · TressaM JohnsonWow! Great resort, right from the start we arrived early and they got our room cleaned and ready before noon. Nice cabins, had everything we needed. We had never fished farm lake before so they provided us with a map that had some usual hot spots to start us on the right path. Screened in porch, grill, private fire ring at all the cabins and canoes to paddle in to the boundry water for the day. Everything we needed was here and made such a great weekend, thanks Timber Trail and staff! We will be back.
