This article will provide a comprehensive overview of Washburn Equestrian Area, designed to help local users in Florida learn more about this hidden gem. We will delve into its specific location and accessibility, outline the essential services and facilities available, highlight its most prominent features, and provide all the necessary contact information for planning your visit. While Washburn offers a primitive camping experience, understanding its offerings will ensure you are well-prepared for a rewarding and memorable outdoor escape. As with any outdoor venture, especially in natural preserves, it is always advisable to conduct thorough research and preparation to ensure your safety and enjoyment.
Washburn Equestrian Area is strategically located at 14071 County Rd 579, Thonotosassa, FL 33592, USA. This address places it within Hillsborough County, specifically within the sprawling Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve. The preserve itself is a vital green space, offering a natural buffer and a haven for wildlife and outdoor recreation relatively close to the urban centers of the Tampa Bay area.
The campground's location on County Road 579 (Morris Bridge Road) provides straightforward access. County Road 579 is a well-known artery in the eastern Hillsborough County area, easily reachable from major thoroughfares. For those traveling from greater Tampa, Interstate 75 (I-75) is a short drive to the west, connecting to County Road 579, making the campground quite accessible for a natural retreat. This balance of being immersed in nature while still having relatively easy access from major roads is a significant advantage for local users.
While the campground is set in a natural, more rural part of Thonotosassa, essential services are not entirely out of reach. Nearby communities, including Thonotosassa itself and Plant City, offer basic amenities such as gas stations, convenience stores, and some dining options. For more extensive needs, the city of Tampa, with its full range of retail, dining, and medical facilities, is a reasonable drive away. This ensures that while you can enjoy the rustic charm of Washburn, you're not completely isolated from modern conveniences.
One of the most defining aspects of Washburn's location is its direct connection to the expansive trail system of the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve. This preserve boasts over 60 miles of multi-use trails, which are a major draw for both equestrians and hikers. The ability to directly access these trails from the campground makes it an ideal staging point for extended outdoor adventures within the preserve's diverse ecosystems.
Washburn Equestrian Area provides a primitive camping experience, meaning the services available are basic and focused on facilitating a natural outdoor stay rather than offering extensive modern amenities. This is a key aspect for visitors to understand and prepare for. Based on public information and typical primitive campground offerings:
- Primitive Campsites: Designated areas for tent camping, often with clearings for setting up camp.
- Equestrian-Friendly Setup: The area is specifically designed for equestrian use, which typically means ample space for horse trailers and potentially designated areas for horses (e.g., hitching posts, or room for portable corrals). While primitive, it caters to the needs of horse campers.
- Portable Toilets (Porta-Potties): Basic toilet facilities are provided. User reviews suggest that these are generally maintained, but visitors should always be prepared for a primitive experience.
- Non-Potable Water: A hand pump for water is available. It is crucial to note that this water is non-potable and not suitable for drinking or personal washing without proper treatment (boiling, filtering) as indicated by user reviews. Campers must bring their own potable water for drinking and cooking.
- Free Camping: A significant service offered is that camping here is free of charge, although a reservation is required.
- Access to Trails: Direct access to the extensive network of multi-use trails within the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve, suitable for horseback riding and hiking.
It is important to emphasize that Washburn does NOT offer amenities such as electricity, potable water at individual sites, showers, or dump stations. Visitors must be self-sufficient and prepared for a genuine primitive camping experience.
Washburn Equestrian Area boasts several distinct features that make it a compelling choice for specific types of outdoor enthusiasts:

- Natural Immersion: It provides a true primitive camping experience amidst Florida’s natural landscapes, allowing campers to disconnect and enjoy the serenity of the wilderness.
- Dog-Friendly: Reviews indicate that dogs are allowed, making it a great option for pet owners who want to bring their furry companions on their outdoor adventures (standard leash laws and waste rules apply).
- Scenic Environment: The preserve offers scenic views of Florida's diverse ecosystems, including forests and wetlands, providing excellent opportunities for nature photography and wildlife observation.
As a publicly managed recreation area that offers free camping, Washburn Equestrian Area does not typically run commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the traditional sense. The primary and most significant "offer" is the free camping itself.
- Free Camping (with Reservation): The core benefit of Washburn Equestrian Area is that it provides no-cost primitive camping. Campers are only required to make a reservation in advance through the managing authority.
Any changes to the access policies or introduction of fees would be managed by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), which oversees the preserve. It is always recommended to check their official website or contact their land resources department for the most current information regarding reservations, rules, and any operational updates.

Customer Reviews
4 stars cause it's free with a with a portable Jon that actually stays clean but there is alot of road noise from the traffic that never stops also non portable water not good enough to wash a dog in but overall it's clean easy access
You have to reserve to camp. Always pleasant, lots of trails. You don't have to have a horse.
I just stayed here the past 2 nights, and it was really nice. They pumped out the porta John yesterday, but it wasn't terrible before, so it's being maintained well. There is a bit of noise from the road, but otherwise it's quiet and peaceful. It looks like a few of the fire rings have walked away, which is unfortunate, but I counted 3. The one closest to the water doesn't have a grate on it, so keep that in mind. Definitely a great place to camp. Honestly, all of the SWFWMD sites I've stayed at have been nice. Don't expect amenities, pack it in pack it out.
Our family loves to come here for the day and get away. Thick Forrest trees canopy walk ways; shading you as you hike along the trails. We have seen a few people with their horses and there is enough room for all walks of life here.
We go here all the time! We like to go walking, but you can also go horseback riding, camping, all different kinds of things we even do geo hunting out here. We love this area
