Location and Accessibility

15 Mile Creek Campground is nestled in the heart of Western Maryland at 11741 High Germany Rd, Little Orleans, MD 21766, USA. This strategic address places it in a prime location for outdoor enthusiasts, offering unparalleled access to a wealth of natural and historical attractions. The campground is specifically located at Canal Mile 140 on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath, making it a direct access point for those exploring this iconic pathway.

Accessibility to 15 Mile Creek Campground is a significant advantage for Maryland locals. Unlike many hiker-biker specific campsites along the C&O Canal, 15 Mile Creek is a drive-in campground, meaning you can easily access your campsite by vehicle. It accommodates tents, trailers, and RVs up to 20 feet, making it suitable for a variety of camping setups. While some navigation apps might direct visitors on very narrow roads, the main access via High Germany Road is generally well-maintained. It's always advisable to consult the most current directions, perhaps from the official C&O Canal National Historical Park website, to ensure the smoothest route.

The campground's location is particularly appealing due to its immediate proximity to the Potomac River, offering "nice boat ramp" access for kayakers, canoers, and small craft. This is a huge plus for water enthusiasts. Additionally, its position directly on the C&O Canal Towpath provides direct access for miles of scenic biking and hiking. The Western Maryland Rail Trail also runs nearby, providing another paved option for cyclists. Furthermore, the charming town of Little Orleans is just a short distance away, known for its local establishments like "Bill's Place," which serves as a popular spot for refreshments and supplies for canal travelers. The "views of the surroundings are absolutely gorgeous," as noted by campers, highlight the picturesque natural setting that surrounds this conveniently located campground, making the journey and stay a truly rewarding experience for Marylanders.

Services Offered

15 Mile Creek Campground, managed by the National Park Service as part of the C&O Canal National Historical Park, offers a range of essential services designed to enhance the comfort and experience of its campers. While it maintains a somewhat primitive feel compared to full-service commercial RV parks, it provides key amenities that are highly valued by visitors.

  • Drive-in Campsites: The campground features designated campsites that are accessible by vehicle, accommodating tents, trailers, and small RVs up to 20 feet. There are nine single drive-in campsites available.
  • Group Campsite: A separate group site is available that can accommodate up to 30 people, though it does not have direct vehicle access.
  • Picnic Tables: Each single campsite is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and dining.
  • Fire Rings/Grills: Individual fire rings and grills are provided at each site, allowing campers to enjoy campfires and cook over an open flame (always check for fire bans).
  • Restroom Facilities (Vault Toilets): The campground offers "clean and well maintained" vault toilets (also referred to as pit toilets). These facilities are available year-round.
  • Potable Water (Seasonal): Potable water is available from mid-April to mid-November. It's important to note that this well water is treated with iodine and should not be consumed by individuals with iodine allergies or those on medication for an overactive thyroid. Campers should verify current conditions and may consider bringing their own water treatment options.
  • Boat Ramp: A "nice boat ramp" provides direct access for launching kayaks, canoes, and small non-motorized boats onto the Potomac River.
  • Trash Collection: Unlike many primitive hiker-biker sites, 15 Mile Creek Campground does offer trash collection services, making it more convenient for campers.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a campground managed by the National Park Service (NPS) within the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, 15 Mile Creek Campground typically operates under a fixed fee structure rather than offering traditional "promotions" or "special offers" like private commercial campgrounds. The fees for individual campsites are generally nominal, and a nominal fee applies for the group site as well.

The "offer" of 15 Mile Creek Campground lies in its consistent affordability and the exceptional value it provides through its prime location and well-maintained basic amenities. While there aren't seasonal discounts or package deals, its continuous availability for a reasonable fee makes it a highly attractive option for Maryland locals.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on camping fees, reservation policies (as sites are often reservable up to 6 months in advance via Recreation.gov), and any operational alerts (such as water pump status or fire bans), it is crucial to consult the official Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park website (NPS.gov/choh) or the Recreation.gov platform directly. Any broader National Park Service passes (like the America the Beautiful pass) would apply to park entrance fees, but typically not directly to individual campsite fees, which are already very low. Always verify current conditions and any booking requirements before planning your trip.

Nice little camp ground. Great views- scenery. We had the group site which was perfect. Other 9 sites pretty close together. Being the 4th, with all the public down there I wish they had attended to the 2 bathrooms. Group site has it's own portable.
