Location and Accessibility

Rome Riverside Campground is located at N3780 W Water St, Sullivan, WI 53178, USA. This address places the campground in the charming rural setting of Sullivan, a village primarily in Jefferson County, in Southeastern Wisconsin. The location offers a blend of natural beauty and reasonable accessibility to nearby towns and attractions.

The "Riverside" in its name strongly suggests its proximity to a body of water, likely the Scuppernong River, which flows through the area. This river access can be a significant draw for campers interested in fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying waterside tranquility. The campground is also situated relatively close to portions of the Kettle Moraine State Forest – Lapham Peak Unit, offering additional opportunities for hiking, biking, and exploring Wisconsin’s unique glacial topography.

Access to Rome Riverside Campground is typically via well-maintained local roads connected to Wisconsin's state highway network. State Highway 18 and 67 are key routes in the vicinity, providing convenient travel for campers coming from Milwaukee, Madison, or other parts of Southern Wisconsin. While rural, the road network ensures a straightforward drive for both vehicles and RVs.

Public transportation directly to the campground is generally not available, as is common for campgrounds located in more natural or rural settings. Therefore, personal vehicle ownership is essential for reaching the campground and exploring the surrounding area. The location strikes a balance between providing a peaceful, natural escape and maintaining practical access to nearby communities like Sullivan, Dousman, or even Oconomowoc for supplies, dining, or other conveniences. This makes it a feasible option for Wisconsin locals looking for a close-to-home outdoor adventure.

Services Offered

Rome Riverside Campground aims to provide a range of services that support a comfortable camping experience. Based on typical campground offerings and insights from customer reviews, here are the services likely provided:

  • Camping Sites: The campground offers sites suitable for both recreational vehicles (RVs) and tents. However, one review noted challenges with site size: "First, they tried put my 29 foot camper on a site that would accommodate a vehicle only half that long. Second, the site they did give me was so cramped, I hardly had room for my camper and tow vehicle." Conversely, another reviewer mentioned "Huge camping plots as well," suggesting variety in site sizes or improvements over time.
  • Utility Hookups: For RV sites, common hookups typically include electric and water. The review mentioning "too much fluctuation in the power whenever I turned my RV fan on" and the owner's suggestion to "unplug my surge protector!" highlights a potential issue with electrical stability at some sites, which is a critical consideration for RV campers.
  • Restrooms and Showers: Public restrooms and showers are standard amenities. However, one review explicitly stated, "the showers were run down and dingy. I would not have wanted to use them." This contrasts sharply with another review praising that "The campground and shower building is kept immaculate. They got new shower heads in the woman's showers!" This suggests either recent improvements or differing experiences.
  • Firewood and Ice Sales: A reviewer noted, "every morning they came rolling by with ice bags and firewood!" This indicates a convenient service for campers needing these essential items delivered. However, the first reviewer also stated, "Plus, I was never told how to get firewood," suggesting a lack of clear communication on this service.
  • On-Site Shop/Store: The mention of "walking distance to the cute little shop called Pickets which has a bunch of stuff to complement your stay" indicates a nearby convenience for campers, either on-site or immediately adjacent to the campground.
  • Management Interaction: There are conflicting accounts of management interaction. One reviewer found "Every interaction I had with an employee was positive. They really seem to be there for one to have the best stay possible." Conversely, another faced significant communication and reimbursement issues with the owner regarding power problems and early departure. This suggests inconsistency or a need for direct communication and clear agreements.

Given the contrasting reviews, prospective campers should directly inquire about specific site dimensions, utility reliability, and current conditions of facilities before booking, especially for longer stays.

Features / Highlights

Rome Riverside Campground, while subject to varied guest experiences, offers several features that could be considered highlights, contributing to its appeal as a camping destination in Wisconsin. These aspects often depend on individual expectations and recent improvements.

  • Proximity to Scuppernong River: Its "Riverside" name strongly implies access to or views of the Scuppernong River, offering opportunities for fishing, paddling, or simply enjoying the tranquil sounds of the water.
  • Proximity to Kettle Moraine State Forest: The campground's location near the Kettle Moraine State Forest provides access to extensive trails for hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing, a significant highlight for nature enthusiasts.
  • Community Atmosphere: One reviewer explicitly states, "The folks here are top-notch," indicating a friendly and welcoming environment among campers, which can greatly enhance a stay.
  • On-Site Convenience Store (Pickets): The mention of "Pickets which has a bunch of stuff to complement your stay" being within walking distance is a practical highlight, offering easy access to forgotten items or treats without needing to drive.
  • Firewood and Ice Delivery: The service of "rolling by with ice bags and firewood" directly to sites is a convenient feature that saves campers time and effort.
  • Recent Improvements: The positive review mentioning "They got new shower heads in the woman's showers!" indicates that the campground is actively making improvements to its facilities, which is a positive sign of ongoing investment and care.
  • Event-Friendly Location: The campground's suitability for visitors attending large local events, such as the "Phish concert" mentioned in a review, suggests its capacity and appeal as a base for various regional activities.

It is important to acknowledge that reviews present a mixed picture. While features like friendly staff, convenient delivery, and nearby shops are highlighted positively, concerns about cramped sites, power fluctuations, and the condition of showers (though some noted improvements) are also present. Prospective campers should weigh these various aspects when considering Rome Riverside Campground.

Promotions or Special Offers

Like many private campgrounds in Wisconsin, Rome Riverside Campground might offer various promotions or special offers to attract and retain campers throughout its operating season. While specific ongoing "special offers" are not explicitly detailed in the provided information, campgrounds typically engage in practices that can be considered beneficial to their guests:

  • Seasonal Rates: It's common for campgrounds to have varying rates based on the season (e.g., lower rates in spring and fall shoulder seasons compared to peak summer). This can be a "promotion" for those looking for a more affordable or quieter camping experience.
  • Extended Stay Discounts: For campers looking to stay for a week, a month, or even longer, special discounted weekly or monthly rates are often available. The review mentioning an "$850 for the month" rate indicates they do offer monthly options, which are generally more cost-effective per night.
  • Themed Weekend Specials: While not explicitly stated, campgrounds often organize themed weekends or events that might include bundled activities or special pricing, enhancing the value of a stay. The mention of "Phish concert" weekend suggests they cater to specific events, which could involve packages.
  • Early Bird Booking: Some campgrounds offer discounts for booking well in advance of the camping season.
  • Group Rates: For larger groups or family reunions, special rates might be available for booking multiple sites.

To find out about any current promotions, specific seasonal pricing, or long-term stay options, the most reliable method is to directly contact Rome Riverside Campground. Utilizing the provided phone numbers for direct inquiry is the best approach to obtain the most accurate and up-to-date information on any available deals or packages. Given the mixed feedback on communication and pricing clarity, persistence and direct verification of all terms are highly recommended.

After a couple of days chasing them on this, he finally sent me $500 via Venmo." This highlights a potential challenge with problem-solving and reimbursement, which is a critical factor for longer stays or when issues arise. Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

Rome Riverside Campground in Sullivan, Wisconsin, presents a mixed, yet potentially suitable, option for locals seeking an outdoor escape. Its appeal for Wisconsin residents lies in its location and some of its amenities, while also requiring careful consideration of past guest experiences.

Firstly, its location in Sullivan, Southeastern Wisconsin, offers good accessibility for residents from major urban centers like Milwaukee and Madison. This relatively short drive means less time commuting and more time enjoying the natural surroundings, making it a convenient choice for weekend getaways or even longer stays. The proximity to the Scuppernong River provides opportunities for water-based activities, and its situation near the Kettle Moraine State Forest offers extensive trails for hiking and biking, appealing to those who enjoy active outdoor pursuits in Wisconsin's unique landscape.

Secondly, the campground boasts some positive features that enhance the local camping experience. The availability of essentials like firewood and ice delivery to sites is a significant convenience. The walking distance to "Pickets," a local shop, adds a charming and practical element, allowing campers to easily pick up forgotten items or local goods. Furthermore, the positive sentiment from one reviewer, describing "top-notch" folks and an "immaculate" campground and shower building (with new shower heads), suggests that there are aspects of the park that contribute to a very positive and friendly community atmosphere. For locals looking for a welcoming environment where they can socialize with other campers, this could be a major draw.

However, it is crucial for Wisconsin locals to carefully consider the contrasting reviews. Concerns regarding cramped sites for larger RVs, power fluctuations that affect essential appliances, and past difficulties with communication and reimbursement from the owner are significant. While improvements appear to have been made (e.g., new shower heads), prospective campers, especially those with larger RVs or who rely on consistent power, should inquire directly and thoroughly about the current state of these issues.

In conclusion, Rome Riverside Campground offers a location rich in natural beauty and some commendable services that can provide an enjoyable camping experience for locals. Its suitability hinges on managing expectations based on the varied feedback. For those with smaller setups, flexible power needs, and a desire for a friendly community near excellent outdoor recreational areas in Southeastern Wisconsin, it could be a good fit. However, direct communication with the campground about specific site availability, power reliability, and current facility conditions is paramount for a successful and stress-free stay.

First, they tried put my 29 foot camper on a site that would accommodate a vehicle only half that long. Second, the site they did give me was so cramped, I hardly had room for my camper and tow vehicle. Third, the showers were run down and dingy. I would not have wanted to use them. Plus, I was never told how to get firewood. Fourth, I paid for a 1 month stay ($850) and after 4 nights had to leave. My surge protector detected too much fluctuation in the power whenever I turned my RV fan on. Since I have a pet, I required A/C so I could leave the camper at times. When I called and spoke to the owner about the power, he said to unplug my surge protector! Not an option under any circumstances. I am full time RV, so I had to find an alternate campground on July 4th - the busiest camping weekend in Wisconsin. I was told the owner would bring me a check for partial reimbursement the day I was leaving. I waited for a couple of hours so I could leave but he didn't show and didn't call. I finally called the owners and was told he didn't have his checkbook that day. He wanted to mail it, but I don't have a physical address. After a couple of days chasing them on this, he finally sent me $500 via Venmo. It was $850 for the month, but $350 for 4 nights.

The folks here are top-notch. The campground and shower building is kept immaculate. They got new shower heads in the woman's showers! Every interaction I had with an employee was positive. They are walking distance to the cute little shop called Pickets which has a bunch of stuff to complement your stay. Huge camping plots as well. I'm looking forward to my next time back.

What a great play to stay when going to Alpine Valley. Food was provided on site for Friday and Saturday. During the day you can tube down the Bark River with multiple places to enter and exit the river with just a quick walk back to the cap grounds. If you need beer, food or any essentials Pickett's General Store is just outside of the campground and provides anything that you may need. Plenty of food and drink options a few miles down the road in Sullivan. Tom and his staff were great hosts and took care of us in a multitude of ways. This will definitely where we stay next time Phish rolls back through SE Wisconsin. I cannot recommend this enough for anyone who wants to enjoy the shows and not have to count drinks before leaving the venue.

Everyone at Rome River Side camp ground from Tom and Heather, Bruce, John, and Josh are very helpful from the 1st day we arrived to our seasonal site in 2023. We are here for years to come. We also have to mention Pickets Country Store a quarter mile away. The food they offer is great. The mini grocery section is nice to have so close to the campground. We are so happy to have found this campsite.

Thank you Tom and the entire staff at RomeRiverside for a great Fourth of July weekend. Management stayed in contact with me months prior to arrival and called me the morning of arrival to wish us safe travels. We had a group of 20 attending Dave Matthews Band concert at Alpine with shuttle service that was outstanding. Showers and bathrooms we clean and with hot water which is a change for most of us!! We will definitely be back in the future!!
