This campground is a testament to simple, back-to-basics camping, appealing to those who appreciate rugged beauty over modern luxuries. It's a place where the sounds of the forest, and occasionally a passing train, replace urban clamor, inviting campers to embrace a more natural rhythm of life.
Sunny Crest Family Campground is nestled within the sprawling beauty of White Pines Forest State Park, Illinois's westernmost stand of virgin white pine trees. This natural gem provides a picturesque backdrop for your camping adventure. While it caters primarily to tent campers, car campers, and those with smaller pop-ups or camper vans, its allure lies in its affordability and integration with the surrounding state park's extensive recreational opportunities. It’s a spot for the adventurous, where "sites are not flat with no pads or hookups," and some require driving across uneven grass. However, what it might lack in paved perfection, it more than makes up for in natural charm and accessibility to incredible outdoor activities. Despite the occasional critique about site leveling or traffic, many find the "great price to camp" ($10/night as noted by a reviewer) and the overall natural setting to be highly rewarding. It's important to remember that this campground thrives on a more rustic appeal, and managing expectations in line with a state park primitive camping experience will lead to a more enjoyable stay.

Most sites are not level, sites are close together, and have to drive thru grass to get to many of the sites. Not many wooded/private sites. Great price to camp. ($10/night) We camped at site 66 and there was a lot of traffic from cars trying to get to their sites and a lot of foot traffic from people going to the showers/bathrooms. Bathrooms were not the cleanest, had a tree frog in the shower. There is a train that goes by frequently (didn't bother us too much) Seems to be a lot of unnecessary traffic on the roads especially at night. The same cars kept driving by repeatedly and didn't seem to be camping. The first night we had children from surrounding sites playing near and at times were in our site to the point a couple tripped over our tent stakes. People didn't seem to be respectful of quiet times and were quite loud later at night. Parents were not watching their children and let them run all over and play in the road. (Not the parks fault...people please be respectful of others)
Aug 13, 2018 · Melissa IsbellGreat campground in a gorgeous state park. This is not a campground for big rvs and motor homes. Sites are not flat with no pads or hookups. Some require driving across uneven grass. Best suited for tent/car camping or small pop ups or camper vans. That said it is very well maintained with dumpsters and vault toilets. Nearby cedar ridge has flush toilets and shower building (1/4 mile walk). State park itself is full of hiking trails and fishing spots. Also has a gift shop and excellent restaurant. Highly recommend this campground!!
Sep 04, 2022 · Susannah BallThis place has an amazing shower facility. There are some fish in the waters on the park land.... A lot of good smallmouth and a few trout. There are an extreme number of large crawdads in multiple places. The rangers are really cool. Just don't listen to the sign that says they sell bait at the gift shop.
Aug 24, 2021 · RoosterWhite Pines is a beautiful park with a great array of rustic campsites and wonderful day-use areas. The hosts are friendly, and the scenery is beautiful with miles and miles of trails. There is a lodge with a restaurant, and cabins are available if camping isn't your thing.
Mar 03, 2020 · Amber WicksGreat place to camp! Clean outhouses. Be aware if you havea low riding vehicle as you have to cross a stream to get to the camp sites.
