Nestled right beside the beloved Adventureland Theme Park and Adventure Bay Water Park, this campground provides an ideal base for families and individuals seeking a memorable getaway without venturing too far from home. It's a place where you can enjoy the simple pleasures of camping while having immediate access to some of Iowa's premier entertainment.

Introduction / Overview

Adventureland Campground stands as a popular destination for campers across Iowa, particularly those eager to combine their love for the outdoors with the excitement of an amusement park. This full-service campground caters to both RV and tent campers, offering a variety of site options to suit different preferences. Its primary draw is undoubtedly its unparalleled proximity to Adventureland Theme Park and Adventure Bay Water Park, allowing guests to easily walk or take a convenient shuttle to the parks. Beyond the rides and water slides, the campground itself aims to provide a comfortable and engaging environment for its visitors, promising a blend of relaxation and recreation that is often sought after by local Iowans.

While the allure of the amusement park is strong, the campground strives to offer its own set of amenities designed to enhance the camping experience. It’s a seasonal operation, typically open from April through October, accommodating visitors throughout the prime spring, summer, and fall months. Many long-term campers and seasonal workers for the park also call Adventureland Campground home during these periods, contributing to a vibrant and often lively atmosphere.

Location and Accessibility

Adventureland Campground is strategically located at 2600 Adventureland Dr, Altoona, IA 50009, USA. This prime address places it directly adjacent to the Adventureland Resort, making it incredibly convenient for park-goers. For local Iowans, its accessibility is a major plus. Situated just off I-80, a major interstate highway, and near US-65, the campground is easily reachable from various parts of the state. It's approximately 10 to 12 miles northeast of downtown Des Moines, meaning that even residents of the capital city can make a quick trip for a weekend escape.

The ease of access extends beyond just driving. While many campers arrive in their RVs or with their tent setups, the proximity to the theme park means less travel hassle once you've arrived. Guests often appreciate being able to park their vehicle at their campsite and then walk to the park entrance or utilize any available shuttles. This convenience minimizes daily travel and maximizes time spent enjoying the attractions or simply relaxing at the campsite.

Navigating to the campground itself is generally straightforward, though some past visitors have noted that signage at the entrance could be improved. However, once you're on Adventureland Drive, the campground is hard to miss. Its location truly makes it a central hub for anyone looking to explore the entertainment offerings of Altoona and the wider Des Moines metropolitan area.

I would say location is nice, because it puts you in proximity to a lot of things. Campground amenities for the price, is not reasonable at least when I came a few weeks ago. I understand that the pool would not been filled yet, however, still for the price I was a little letdown. The person in the check-in office was nice, respectful, courteous, and prompt. I also did not like that. They charged five dollars a day for a firing that you have to take to your campsite yourself. Being in the middle of a city, it was still pretty quiet for the most part. However, some other long-term campers put large items near the trash cans, which made it look a little gross. The shower house and restrooms were not clean, barely operational. However, they did have constant hot water, which was nice. I gave it a three stars simply because of the location and the person working at the check-in office. The signage could be better and the upkeep and maintenance definitely needs to be improved.

I wish I would have checked the reviews before booking our stay!!! The young lady at the office was very kind but that’s about the extent of our positive experience. Signage at the entrance was barely visible! Grounds very unkept- septic access was totally open/ no cover on- no where to put our normal stuff outside our camper! Grass was long and weeds all over! No WiFi available period! I definitely will NEVER come here again!!

Stayed here with my friends here for Fourth of July and the memories are hitting. Great place for kids and adults. There is an empty lot where I played wiffle ball, and I never had that much fun. While we play the parents can crack open a cold one and chillax. Best place for Fourth of July. Terrible Wi-Fi though. 3/5

Stay there for over a month spend almost $1,400 in fees for staying there and had some hardship come up and was treated like a criminal before I even had a chance to leave the RV park didn't even give me a chance to go pay up at the office and was treated like a criminal being followed and harassed by the security guard

Very expensive for what you get. The signage is poor. You have to check in at the hotel but there isn’t really parking for campers and it is very easy to accidentally turn into the amusement park. There was only one worker at the desk so check in took forever. Then she gave me a map and told me to go find it myself. Told us we had to wear the wristbands even though none of the attractions were open. We requested a pull through and they gave us a pull in. Sites are run down. Many campers even more so. Lots of broke equipment around. Good amount of road noise
