Superior Hiking Trail, Finland, MN 55603, USA
Introduction / Overview
For dedicated backpackers and long-distance hikers in Minnesota, the name Aspen Knob Camp signals a key point of rest along the iconic Superior Hiking Trail (SHT). Unlike traditional, drive-in campgrounds in state parks, Aspen Knob is a primitive, backcountry campsite—a vital amenity for those trekking the over 300 miles of rugged footpath that winds along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Located in the deeply forested, rugged terrain near Finland, Minnesota, this camp provides essential infrastructure for hikers needing a place to set down their pack for the night.
Aspen Knob Camp is managed as part of the system of approximately 94 designated backcountry campsites along the SHT. This system operates on a unique and highly appreciated model in the hiking community: campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and are entirely free of charge. This allows local hikers to enjoy an extended, immersive wilderness experience without the need for reservations or fees, strongly encouraging exploration of Minnesota’s celebrated Northwoods region.
The site itself is typically nestled among the mixed hardwood and conifer forest typical of the region, offering sheltered spots for tents and a communal area for a fire. As the name suggests, the area is known to feature stands of aspen, which provide a beautiful golden hue in the autumn months. It is an authentic, no-frills wilderness experience, requiring hikers to carry in all their supplies and practice strict Leave No Trace principles.
Location and Accessibility
Aspen Knob Camp is not a destination for vehicle-based campers; it is exclusively accessible via foot travel on the Superior Hiking Trail.
Address: Superior Hiking Trail, Finland, MN 55603, USA
Its location is found in a challenging and scenic segment of the trail system, roughly situated between the Blesner Creek Campsite and the boundary of Crosby-Manitou State Park. For hikers traveling southbound, it’s often noted as a welcome stop after passing through the more structured area of the State Park, which typically requires a fee for camping.
The nearest access point for logistical planning is typically a trailhead or road crossing near Finland, MN. However, hikers should consult the official Superior Hiking Trail Guidebook or Trail Atlas for exact mileage and coordinates, as the campground is often a pre-planned stop based on daily hiking distances. The nearest roads, such as Blesner Road, are often rural and unpaved. It is important to note that the remote nature of the site means that while it is easily accessible by dedicated trail users, it requires a significant hike from any public parking area. This contributes to the overall wilderness feel, though hikers should be aware of potential road noise from nearby, lightly-traveled service roads, which can occasionally be noticeable.
Services Offered
As a designated backcountry site on the SHT, the services offered at Aspen Knob Camp are intentionally rustic and minimal, designed to support overnight backpacking while minimizing environmental impact. The site’s primary purpose is to provide a legal, structured, and designated area for an overnight stay in a region where most surrounding land is private.
Features / Highlights
Aspen Knob Camp's highlights are tied directly to its role as an essential stop on one of the country's premier long-distance hiking trails.
Contact Information

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Aspen Knob Camp is an invaluable resource perfectly suited for Minnesotans who embrace the state's deep tradition of rugged, self-sufficient backpacking. It represents the freedom and accessibility of the Superior Hiking Trail itself. For local hikers, this campsite offers a reliable, designated, and, most importantly, free stopping point on a world-class trail. This allows residents to disconnect and immerse themselves fully in the North Shore wilderness, without the logistical headaches of booking reservations or paying fees. It serves as an authentic trail experience, providing the bare necessities—a place to pitch a tent, a fire ring, and a latrine—which is precisely what a serious backpacker desires after a long day of challenging hiking. While the proximity to some minor road noise is a known trade-off for its location, the overall experience of camping deep in the woods along the SHT, beneath a canopy of pines and aspens, makes this a cherished and essential stop for any local venturing out onto the beautiful footpath of the North Shore.

Pretty good site to spend the night. Sheltered with good open ground for tents and lots of trees for hammocks. Large enough to accomodate multiple parties. There is some road noise but not too bad.
Aug 10, 2025 · Michael HotzHeavy truck activity on Blesner Road next to the camp was very loud and went until after 10pm. There was also a dog to the north of the campsite that barks and howls until extremely late at night which kept me awake. I would recommend using a different campsite instead as the traffic noise and dog were nearly unbearable after a long day of backpacking and just wanting to get some sleep.
Aug 28, 2023 · TammyIt was a nice camp site. Good Water was available from the creek north of the camp when I was there. There are two creeks near the site. One wasn't too good
