It is a haven for those looking to disconnect from the daily grind and immerse themselves in the deep woods, with the soothing background noise of the nearby Manitou River. It is important for prospective campers to understand that this site demands a solid commitment to backcountry principles, including a challenging trek and adherence to strict "Leave No Trace" guidelines. For the prepared Minnesota local, however, this site offers the ultimate reward: true peace and an intimate connection with the state's spectacular Arrowhead Region.
Location and Accessibility
Manitou Backpack Campsite #3
is situated within the pristine boundaries of George H. Crosby Manitou State Park, a park specifically designed for the backpacking enthusiast. While the park's official mailing address is typically associated with the nearby town of Silver Bay or Finland, the specific location of the campsite is given asLake No. 1, MN 55614, USA
. This geographic designation places it firmly in the rugged highlands of the North Shore, slightly inland from the famed scenic drive of Highway 61.Accessibility to the campsite is strictly on foot. Unlike many state parks, George H. Crosby Manitou does not offer drive-in or cart-in camping—all sites are hike-in only. To reach Campsite #3, you will start at the main park parking lot. According to recent reports, the hike is approximately 1.3 miles (on a fitness tracker) from the parking area. For backpackers, this distance is moderate, but the terrain is challenging.
The trail leading to the site is described as being full of roots and rocks, as well as significant hills, making for a difficult trek with a full, heavy backpack. The site is often noted as being further south of where some older maps or digital listings may place it. Its location near the Manitou River is a highlight, though campers should be prepared for the natural environment, including insects like mosquitoes, especially given its proximity to the water.
It is crucial that all visitors to this backcountry location arrive well before sunset to allow sufficient time to navigate the rugged trail and set up camp. Campers should be prepared with a map and compass or a downloaded trail map, as cell service is generally unreliable in the remote areas of the park.

It is an ideal spot to practice wilderness skills—from careful food storage to safe fire-building—all while being enveloped by the raw, natural beauty of the Manitou River valley.
Choosing
Manitou Backpack Campsite #3
is an investment in an experience that truly celebrates Minnesota's wilderness heritage, making it a highly suitable and deeply rewarding adventure for the well-prepared local. One of the closer sites to the parking lot at 1.3 miles on my Fitbit from my car. It is farther South than listed in Google Maps. There is an old site at their location with a fire pit and not any space to set up your tent. Has enough space for at least 3 small tents and some wood logs built up. The nearest toilet is at the parking lot. Lots of hills full of roots and rocks between the parking lot and the site made it a difficult trek with a full backpack. Lots of mosquitoes as it is next to the river. Site 4 is more level and shaded for almost the same distance.
