Introduction / Overview
For New Jersey residents yearning to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the state’s wilder side, Bear Creek Campgrounds in Walpack Township, Sussex County, offers a uniquely rustic and secluded experience. Unlike the large, amenity-heavy RV resorts found elsewhere in the state, Bear Creek Campgrounds is known for providing a more traditional, "back-to-basics" camping environment. It caters to locals who appreciate the raw, untouched beauty of the Delaware Water Gap region and the peace that comes with minimal modern distractions.
Located deep within the beautiful, protected lands of Northwest New Jersey, this destination is less about glamping and more about genuine outdoor adventure. It’s an ideal spot for those who cherish quiet evenings under a blanket of stars, the sounds of a nearby flowing stream, and the simple pleasure of a campfire. While the reviews indicate a range of experiences—from finding it peaceful to describing it as basic—it is clearly the ideal setting for campers who prioritize nature, seclusion, and proximity to major wilderness areas over lavish facilities. If you’re a New Jersey local looking for a truly rustic escape that feels worlds away, Bear Creek Campgrounds demands your consideration.
Location and Accessibility
Bear Creek Campgrounds is uniquely situated at:
9 County Rd 615, Walpack Township, NJ 07881, USA
Its location in Walpack Township is key to its appeal. This is one of the more remote and sparsely populated areas of New Jersey, placing the campgrounds directly within the pristine natural boundaries of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and near Stokes State Forest. Accessibility, however, requires careful consideration. While the camp is technically accessible via County Route 615, the journey involves traveling into a deep, wooded area of Sussex County. This seclusion is what makes the location so peaceful and desirable for many, offering a genuine sense of escape.
For New Jersey locals traveling from the more urbanized eastern and central regions, the drive itself is a scenic journey into the Kittatinny Valley and Ridge region. Visitors should anticipate navigating rural roads as they approach the camp. This remote setting is a feature, not a bug, for those seeking true solitude and a break from the congestion that characterizes much of the Garden State. For outdoor enthusiasts, the camp’s proximity to the Flatbrook River and various hiking trails makes it a strategically perfect base camp.
Services Offered
The services at Bear Creek Campgrounds reflect its commitment to a rustic camping experience. It’s important for prospective New Jersey campers to manage expectations regarding modern amenities. The focus here is on providing the necessary basics to enjoy a night or weekend in the wilderness.
Features / Highlights
The primary highlights of Bear Creek Campgrounds center around its unique location and the authentic, unvarnished outdoor experience it provides, setting it apart from more commercial campgrounds in New Jersey.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Bear Creek Campgrounds is exceptionally suitable for New Jersey locals, particularly those who have exhausted the options of more commercialized parks and are ready for a genuine, rustic adventure. It provides a much-needed counterpoint to the densely populated nature of the state, offering a tangible sense of escape without having to cross state lines into the Poconos or the Catskills. For locals, it's a conveniently accessible retreat to one of New Jersey’s most beautiful and preserved natural areas.
The varied customer feedback—ranging from "peaceful" to critiques of the basic amenities—actually serves to highlight its suitability: it is a no-frills destination for the seasoned and dedicated New Jersey camper who prioritizes the immersion in nature over paved roads and WiFi. It’s a place where the local trout fisherman, the seasoned hiker exploring the Appalachian Trail region, and the family seeking a digital detox can truly thrive. Apr 25, 2025 · RobertQuiet, idyllic, and rustic. I rode my scooter from Pennsylvania and had only a one person backpacking tent. The proprietor and his family seemed like decent folk, I didn't hear any foul language out of them at all which is something I don't see much these days. It was refreshing. He gave me the best price of any campground around and a nice quiet spot by the creek. This was a rustic camping spot with no electric or running water at the site, which was fine. I wish I could post a picture, but if you google Scootinfool you can find my blog where I have posted pics.
Sep 10, 2015 · Scootin' FoolAwesome place to camp do it every year. Great for trout fishing since the river is right next to your site. Ken the owner is a fair guy. Make sure you check in at the office . Always abide by the rules and you'll be good . Drive below the speed limit and stay off the grass
