Introduction / Overview: Your Basecamp for Group Adventures on the Delaware River
For Pennsylvania locals seeking a meaningful and spacious outdoor experience with a group, the Valley View Group Campground in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DWGNRA) is an exceptional choice. Nestled in the tranquil, natural beauty near Lehman Township, this campground offers five primitive group sites designed to accommodate parties ranging from a minimum of five up to 25 people. It is the perfect setting for scout troops, extended family reunions, kayaking clubs, or friends looking for a substantial Poconos getaway.
Operated by the National Park Service, Valley View Group Campground is strategically located directly along the banks of the Delaware River, providing easy access to one of the region’s most significant waterways. This location is geared toward a rustic, tent-only camping experience where the focus is on the environment and group camaraderie. While the facility maintains a high standard of maintenance, as noted by local visitors, the primitive nature means campers must be prepared for a traditional, self-sufficient stay. The site’s peaceful setting and fantastic river access make the modest nightly cost an excellent value for a dedicated group excursion in a world-class recreation area.
Location and Accessibility: Right in the Heart of the DWGNRA
Valley View Group Campground is officially situated in Lehman Township, PA 18324, placing it firmly on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. This makes it easily accessible for residents across the state, particularly those traveling from Eastern Pennsylvania metro areas like Scranton, Allentown, and Philadelphia. The campground is nestled along the scenic US Route 209 corridor, the main north/south artery on the PA side of the park.
Access to the campground is uniquely dual-purpose. Groups can arrive by vehicle, driving down a short gravel roadway from Route 209 to unload gear and passengers. However, please note that for most campers, a quarter-mile walk is required between the campground area and the main parking lot on Federal Road, with only disabled visitors and permit holders being able to park closer to the sites. Crucially, the location also offers primitive river access, allowing river trippers to paddle directly in and access the site via a short path from the shoreline—making it an ideal stop for multi-day canoeing or kayaking trips down the Delaware River. Its location facilitates immediate entry to the wide array of hiking, biking, and water-based recreational opportunities that the DWGNRA is known for, including proximity to the McDade Recreational Trail.
Services Offered: Essential Amenities for a Primitive Group Stay
The National Park Service has equipped Valley View Group Campground with essential facilities to support large groups while maintaining a primitive experience. Campers should be fully self-contained as there are no utility hookups or running water at the site itself, but the core necessities for group camping are provided.
Features / Highlights: River Trips and Secluded Group Space
The unique features of Valley View Group Campground truly set it apart as a premier group destination within the Delaware Water Gap.

Valley View Group Campground is an indispensable resource for Pennsylvania residents seeking to organize an impactful, nature-focused group outing. Its location within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area puts it within a manageable driving distance for millions of local users, yet its secluded, primitive environment ensures a genuine escape into the wilderness. For local hiking clubs, church groups, or large families looking for an authentic and peaceful Poconos camping experience where the focus is on the environment and not on modern amenities, Valley View Group Campground offers the perfect blend of essential infrastructure and stunning natural seclusion. Booking early is essential to secure your group's place in this sought-after riverfront retreat.
Campground is pretty nice and well maintained. We enjoyed how peaceful it was and how easy it was to access the river. My friends and I were just surprised by the nightly cost in comparison to other local campgrounds. The bathrooms were fine, the only downside was some of them had hand soap in them while others had hand sanitizer lol. There was really good cell service!
Sep 21, 2025 · Jordan VargoAwesome group campground for river trippers. Fire pits, toilets (funky), primitive river access. Located on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. A Permit is required to camp here.
Jul 20, 2021 · John BrunnerThe park service cleans the privy everyday and removes the trash. Great for groups but a bit small for large groups.
Jun 30, 2023 · Kendra FullemSo the campground itself was beautiful, tree covered and right on the river. Only downside was that although only one other site was booked, there were AT LEAST 25-30 people staying there with dogs and many children. They had a very loud generator that they ran all night long and they were screaming at each other in the middle of the night. 3 of the people in our group were chased/attacked by their dog. They hung meat over the fire throughout the day and night. They left all of the bear garbage cans open (unlatched) and sprawled their tents and posessions into the common areas and walk ways. It was so unpleasant we cut our trip short. The outhouses were relatively clean. Cell service is good.
Jul 04, 2023 · CarolineThis is a decent experience. You need to get a code for the gate and drive your way towards the parking lot. You will reach the parking area for the campsites. The only downside is the restrooms.
