For generations of Wisconsin families, the call of the great outdoors often leads to the scenic banks of the Mississippi River, and for good reason. Nestled along this iconic waterway in De Soto, Blackhawk Campground stands as a cherished destination, offering a comprehensive and incredibly welcoming experience for campers of all ages. More than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV, Blackhawk Campground is a vibrant hub for outdoor recreation and relaxation, consistently earning rave reviews from those who return year after year to create lasting memories under the Wisconsin sky.
Blackhawk Campground is widely celebrated for its ability to cater to a diverse range of camping styles, from those who prefer the comforts of an RV with electric hookups to traditional tent campers seeking a more rustic feel. What truly sets it apart, however, is the expansive space, the abundance of activities, and the genuinely friendly atmosphere. It's a place where children can safely play, where anglers can find their perfect spot, and where families can gather around a campfire, all while being enveloped by the stunning natural beauty of the Mississippi River Valley and Wisconsin's unique Driftless Area.
This campground isn't just about the amenities; it's about the comprehensive experience it offers. From convenient facilities to thoughtful touches like life jackets readily available at the beach, Blackhawk Campground is clearly designed with the camper in mind. It embraces its role as a central point for exploring the "mighty Mississippi," providing easy access to its main channel and backwaters, making it a true haven for water enthusiasts. For Wisconsin locals, it represents an accessible, well-maintained, and continuously appealing option for their next outdoor adventure.
Blackhawk Campground is ideally located at an Unnamed Road, De Soto, WI 54624, USA. More specifically, it is situated at E590 County Road BI, De Soto, WI 54624, and is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This prime location places it directly adjacent to the main channel of the magnificent Mississippi River, approximately three miles north of the charming village of De Soto, Wisconsin, and about 30 miles south of La Crosse. Its position makes it the largest public use facility in Pool 9 of the Mississippi River, serving as a significant recreational hub for Wisconsin locals and visitors alike.
Accessibility to Blackhawk Campground is straightforward, ensuring a hassle-free journey for campers. It's conveniently located just off Wisconsin State Highway 35, which is part of the scenic Great River Road. This major highway provides easy access from various parts of Wisconsin and beyond. For those driving, the turn onto County Road BI leads directly to the campground entrance. The campground's layout is designed to be user-friendly, with large, level sites that are easy to maneuver, even for larger RVs and 40-foot fifth wheels, as noted by visitors.
The location also boasts excellent natural accessibility to the Mississippi River itself, featuring two boat launching ramps for direct access to the main channel and Green Lake (leading to backwaters). This seamless integration with the river environment is a major draw, allowing campers to easily transition from their site to the water for fishing, boating, and paddling adventures. The well-maintained roads within the park also make for lovely biking and walking, ensuring that all areas of the campground and its immediate natural surroundings are easily explored.
Blackhawk Campground provides a comprehensive array of services and amenities designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience for all visitors. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains a high standard of facilities, as reflected in positive customer reviews.
Blackhawk Campground boasts a wide array of features and highlights that consistently draw campers back, making it a standout destination for outdoor enthusiasts in Wisconsin.
As Blackhawk Campground is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it typically adheres to a standard fee structure rather than running frequent, short-term promotional discounts like a private commercial campground might. However, there are inherent "offers" and value propositions tied to its status as a federal recreation site that benefit many Wisconsin locals:
Wisconsin locals interested in visiting should always check the official Blackhawk Park pages on Recreation.gov and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (St. Paul District) website (https://www.mvp.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Blackhawk-Park/) for the most current information on fees, reservation policies, and any potential programs or events that might be offered. Directly contacting the campground (see contact info below) is also recommended for specific inquiries about rates and availability.

Our family loves this campground. Been going here since I was a kid and now take mine. Plenty of space, campsites, quiet, grilling areas, playgrounds, picnic tables, restrooms, beach area for kids to swim and so many areas to fish and boat. We go just about every week. Life jackets for swimmers right at the beach for convience and your safety.Pet friendly as well. Foodstand also the last time we went. If you are looking for beautiful scenery and space this campground is it! Water is a little high at the moment (June 2024) in pictures but still worth the visit!
Jun 14, 2024 · Katrinna WorthyWe loved our first visit to this park. Very well maintained and clean. Large lots, level and easy to maneuver 40' 5th wheel. Lovely biking and walking through this park. Water is very low right now but all the side lakes and channels would be great canoeing from the nearby launch. Note: only electric at the West loop we stayed in but a dump and potable available in the park. We will be visiting again!
Oct 13, 2022 · Diane CrawfordI am tempted not to leave a review because I want this place all to myself! Best campground ever! The campsites were so tidy and everyone was so friendly. I give this place a 10/10. Will definitely be camping here again!
