Bumpus Mills Campground About
For Tennessee residents seeking a tranquil escape into nature, Bumpus Mills Campground offers a unique and authentic outdoor experience. Located right here in our beautiful state, this campground provides a genuine opportunity to unplug, unwind, and immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Lake Barkley. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bumpus Mills Campground is known for its affordability and its commitment to offering a peaceful environment away from the clamor of everyday life. If you're looking for a spot where the sunsets are breathtaking and the fishing is great, all within a small, intimate setting, then this could be your next favorite camping destination.
While some campgrounds boast endless amenities and constant connectivity, Bumpus Mills prides itself on offering a more back-to-basics approach, allowing visitors to truly disconnect and appreciate the natural surroundings. It’s a place where the sounds of nature replace phone notifications, and the glow of a campfire outshines any screen. This dedication to a simpler, more rustic camping experience is a significant draw for many Tennessee locals who yearn for a genuine outdoor adventure.
Beyond the peace and quiet, the campground's strategic location on Lake Barkley makes it a fantastic base for water-based activities. Whether you're an avid angler hoping to reel in a big catch or simply want to enjoy a relaxing day by the water, Bumpus Mills provides direct access to the lake's abundant offerings. While it may not be surrounded by bustling tourist attractions, its natural appeal and the friendly atmosphere it fosters make it a cherished spot for those who appreciate the untouched beauty of Tennessee's landscapes.
Bumpus Mills Campground is situated at 764 Forest Trail, Bumpus Mills, TN 37028, USA. This location places it firmly within the beautiful natural landscape of rural Tennessee, directly on the shores of Lake Barkley. For many Tennesseans, its appeal lies in its relative seclusion, offering a genuine "off-grid" experience, as noted by visitors. While it provides a sense of getting away from it all, it's still accessible enough for a weekend trip or a longer stay.
The campground's position on Lake Barkley, which is part of the Cumberland River system, means easy access to the water for boating and fishing enthusiasts. It's also adjacent to the vast Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, a significant natural and recreational resource in both Tennessee and Kentucky. This proximity allows for extended exploration beyond the campground itself, including hiking, wildlife viewing, and visiting historical sites.
It's important for visitors to note that while the campground is accessible by car, the roads leading in, and within the campground, can be narrow and winding, as reported by campers. This adds to the rustic charm but is something to be mindful of, especially for those with larger RVs. Given its remote nature, cell phone service can be very limited or non-existent, requiring a drive of several miles (as one reviewer noted, up to 16 miles) to find a signal for calls or internet access. This aspect is crucial for those who rely on connectivity, highlighting Bumpus Mills as a true opportunity to disconnect and embrace the outdoors.

As a campground managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bumpus Mills Campground typically operates on a standardized fee structure, which can be found on recreation.gov. Direct, ongoing promotional codes or seasonal discounts specific only to Bumpus Mills are not commonly advertised in the way private campgrounds might offer them. However, campers in Tennessee can often take advantage of broader federal park passes or discounts that apply to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facilities:
For example, the America the Beautiful - The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass Series may offer discounts on camping fees. This includes:
- Annual Pass: For the general public.
- Senior Pass: A lifetime or annual pass for U.S. citizens or permanent residents aged 62 or over, offering significant discounts on fees, including camping.
- Access Pass: A free lifetime pass for U.S. citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities, which also offers discounts.
- Military Pass: An annual pass for current U.S. military members and their dependents, Gold Star Families, and veterans.
These passes can often provide a 50% discount on standard amenity fees (like camping) at federal recreation sites. It is highly recommended that potential visitors check the official recreation.gov website or contact the campground directly for the most current pricing and any applicable federal discounts, as eligibility criteria and availability can vary.
Additionally, while not a direct promotion, the inherent affordability of Bumpus Mills Campground, with reported fees ranging from approximately $24 to $26 per night (though one review mentioned $12, pricing can fluctuate), already makes it a highly cost-effective option for many campers in Tennessee.

Customer Reviews
If you want a small affordable campground this is your place. The shower house could use for some regular cleaning. I’m not sure it was cleaned at all the time we were there. Not much to do in the area but fish unless you really want to explore outside of the campground. I learned after our time there our site is the worst with bugs. I thought the bugs were just extra because it had rained a lot but a friend told me to never book that site bc the bugs are always backs there. Our site also gets all the rain drained from the upper site. When we checked in the host did prepare us our site would flood for a few areas since rain was expected. The sunsets were fabulous!
No phone service at all, had to drive 16 miles to call out. Beautiful campground but you are off grid. Great fishing. Careful walking on wooden bridge, it rained and was slick.
Great little campground but dont plan on using the restrooms. Because they are beyond disgusting. The white urinals are filled with thousands of dead and living flies. So much that the urinals are nearly black. Id rather use a porta john then even go in there ever again. The views are insane though so if you have an rv you will be fine. But for anyone van/car camping bring a shovel. Went back to try to get a photo as proof but there was a 4in spider in one of the urinals, feeding on the fly buffet, so i noped out.
The host was really nice. The sites are a little close together but offer great views of the lake. Not much to do without a 30 minute drive so it is the perfect campground to set up kick back and relax. The only reason it doesn't get more stars is the latrines and showers. The company contracted to clean them only makes an effort at hosing the floors down and wiping the sinks. I know it is a campground but at least sweep up the bugs instead of hosing them to the corners.
Great area to camp. Small campground, good sights. Needs work done to the showers and hot water flow. Been like this the last 4 times we've camped.
