Cedar River Rd, Indian Lake, NY 12842, USA
For New York State residents yearning for a genuine wilderness experience, one that trades paved roads and electric hookups for the sounds of the forest and the lapping of water, the Cedar River Campsites offer an unparalleled escape. Situated within the expansive and famously wild Moose River Plains Wild Forest, this collection of primitive campsites is an essential destination for the true Adirondack adventurer. Unlike commercial campgrounds, the sites along the Cedar River and its flow provide a rustic, back-to-nature setting that allows local users to fully immerse themselves in the pristine beauty of the Adirondack Park. This is a place where the landscape, the rivers, and the wildlife take center stage, offering a therapeutic break from the demands of modern life.
The campsites themselves are primitive, meaning they offer essential amenities but maintain a minimal impact on the environment, adhering to the principles of a wild forest area. Reviews from local users frequently point to the cluster of sites offering a degree of privacy, while all benefit from the stunning natural backdrop of the Cedar River Flow—a wide, quiet section of the river that is ideal for paddling and fishing. Whether you're a seasoned camper, an avid kayaker, or simply someone looking for a peaceful riverside retreat with scenic views, Cedar River Campsites embodies the rugged, accessible wilderness that makes the Adirondacks a cherished New York resource.
It is important to note that these campsites are often part of the greater system of primitive, free roadside campsites within the Moose River Plains Complex, managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). This means they operate on a first-come, first-served basis, reinforcing the authentic, low-key nature of the camping experience. It’s a place for those who prioritize tranquility and natural splendor over manufactured convenience.
Cedar River Campsites are located off Cedar River Road, near the town of Indian Lake, NY 12842, USA. This places them deep within the central Adirondack Park, acting as the eastern gateway to the sprawling Moose River Plains Wild Forest.
Access to the campsites is a quintessential Adirondack adventure in itself. The Cedar River Road, which leads to the campsites, is a seasonal access road—the Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road—that runs for many miles through the complex. Local users should be aware that while the roads are typically passable by passenger vehicles when open (generally from Memorial Day weekend until the first major snowfall), they are often dirt and can be "shaky" or "interesting," as noted by past visitors. A patient, slow drive is recommended, and high-clearance vehicles may provide greater peace of mind, especially depending on the time of year and recent weather conditions.
Despite the rural feel, the community of Indian Lake is a relatively short drive away (around 20-30 minutes), offering essential services, gas, and supplies. Furthermore, the campsites are centrally located for regional exploration. They provide direct access to the Cedar River Flow, which is a prime location for car-top boating and kayaking. From here, New York residents can easily launch into a vast wilderness area, connecting to extensive hiking and paddling trails throughout the Moose River Plains, making it a highly accessible starting point for deeper wilderness excursions.
The services at Cedar River Campsites are deliberately minimal and rustic, designed to provide a foundational camping experience while preserving the wilderness character of the Moose River Plains Wild Forest. The emphasis is on self-sufficiency, which is part of the appeal for many local Adirondack enthusiasts.

My dad and I always come out to this spot for the views and some fishing. I've explored some of the sites and they looked pretty good, I haven't camped there as we camp In the moose river planes area but it definitely looks like a nice place! I'd definitely say be aware the roads can be interesting depending on time of year, and I definitely found some bear poop while fishing so be aware that's a possibility. But definitely go check it out
Sep 28, 2022 · Tim FeyerabendReally not bad campgrounds. These are clustered but have some privacy here, pit toilets are also clustered and not per spot. Otherwise nice spot with the Cedar River Flow right there. Great for kayakers/fishing. Nice creek nearby, shaky road in spots but not too bad. If you want more privacy or need a pit toilet, keep going into the Moose River Plains.
Sep 15, 2021 · Mark SaettaI have gone camping here many times, and I have always enjoyed it no matter the weather. this place is fantastic for anyone who wishes to experience the Adirondacks and for anyone who loves to go kayaking/canoeing. it is a great place for hiking and fishing, so long as you know the times of the year the fish are most active.
Oct 13, 2017 · Anthony HuntStayed at site number 5, I think. It was by the water in the woods just a little bit. Picnic table, fire ring and several outhouses nearby. Beautiful surroundings. There is a small landing to launch kayaks or canoes. A dam with some additional sites on the other side. Town is about 20-30 minutes away. Several trails nearby. Would recommend. Also would recommend traveling further in if you are looking for more sites.
Oct 10, 2018 · Matthew DWe got really lucky to get the first site next to a little pond just before the camping. Absolutely beautiful with many different hikes to do.
