Introduction / Overview
For New York State residents dreaming of a truly immersive wilderness camping experience, the Indian Lake Islands Campground, managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), offers a unique opportunity. Unlike typical drive-up campgrounds, this facility provides access to 55 remote, boat-only sites scattered across the islands and pristine shorelines of the expansive 4,365-acre Indian Lake. The experience begins not at the campsite itself, but at the Indian Lake Islands Campground - Main Office/Ranger Station/Boat Ramp, the crucial hub for all visitors.
This central facility in Sabael, NY, is more than just a place to check in; it is the official launch site, the source of essential services, and the first point of contact with the knowledgeable DEC staff who manage this beautiful, wild forest area. The Main Office and Boat Ramp function as the gateway to your secluded Adirondack sanctuary, providing safe passage onto the lake and ensuring every visitor is prepared for the adventure ahead. Customer testimonials consistently praise the efficiency and professionalism of the staff, noting, "Helpful staff and nice public boat launch!" and highlighting their "very friendly" demeanor. This combination of excellent logistical support and a breathtaking natural setting sets the stage for an unforgettable experience.
Location and Accessibility
The Indian Lake Islands Campground Main Office and Boat Ramp is strategically located in the heart of the Adirondack Park, easily reachable via a scenic drive along New York State Route 30. While the physical address is NY-30, Sabael, NY 12864, USA, its geographical location in Hamilton County places it firmly within the Central Adirondacks region, an area celebrated for its vast, undeveloped forest lands and numerous lakes.
Accessibility to this site is streamlined for boaters, as this facility boasts a new and modern launch area. It features a large concrete ramp capable of accommodating sizable trailered powerboats, alongside a dedicated hand launch for smaller watercraft such as canoes and kayaks. A key component of this facility is the extensive parking lot, providing ample space for vehicles and trailers—a necessary amenity since all 55 campsites on the lake are accessible only by watercraft. The process is straightforward: campers arrive at the main office to register their party, receive their permit, and then proceed directly to the adjacent boat ramp to launch their gear and commence their journey onto Indian Lake.
The remoteness of the destination is part of the appeal. While a campsite like #39 might be only a mile away on the water, as one reviewer noted, it could still take "15-20 minutes to get there with a 5HP motor." This brief, beautiful commute by water serves as a natural barrier, instantly creating the peace and quiet that visitors seek.

As the central operational hub for a primitive, boat-in campground, the Main Office and Ranger Station prioritize logistics, safety, and core amenities necessary for a successful trip. Aug 24, 2025 · Joel IngoldExcellent campground in an absolutely beautiful park. The site (#39) was clean and the staff was very friendly when we interacted. Our site was relatively close, only a mile away but it took us 15-20 minutes to get there with a 5HP motor. We showered at Lewey Lake campground and had a great week camping.
Jun 01, 2023 · Matthew FitzgeraldLove the area and the Adirondacks! Stayed here one night at the Indian Lake State Campgrounds. Arrived just as they were locking up for the evening and they told me the area to find a site for the evening and just pick out my site and stop by in the morning and pay for it. Wow...was thrilled to get set up before it was completely dark and so appreciated their trust that I'd be back in the morning to pay!! Will be back in a few weeks to camp with my son.
Oct 08, 2019 · Clarissa SStayed here for two nights with my girlfriend. We canoed out to out campsite in the early afternoon. You cannot reach the campsites by land, only by boat. Canoes are rented on site for about $20 per day. Each campsite has a small outhouse, but obviously no running water. There was a well maintained fire pit with a metal circle and flip grate which was perfect for cooking. The campsites were very clean and separate from other campers, which was why we choose this place. The view was incredible. We heard coyotes and all sorts of animals at night. We will definitely be returning as soon as possible!
