Colwell Lake Campground is located near Manistique, MI 49854, USA. Manistique itself is a charming town on the northern shores of Lake Michigan, serving as a hub for services and a gateway to various natural attractions.
The campground's specific location offers the ideal balance of seclusion and accessibility. While it provides a tranquil, natural setting away from major urban centers, it is still reachable via established routes leading into the national forest lands. As a campground often associated with public lands (e.g., National Forests, State Forests in Michigan), Colwell Lake Campground typically operates on a standardized fee structure, rather than offering frequent, fluctuating promotions like private commercial campgrounds. The inherent "value" and "offer" for Michigan locals often lie in its affordability and the rich experience it provides.
However, certain aspects can be considered beneficial "offers" for Michigan residents:
-
Affordable Nightly Rates: Campgrounds managed by federal or state agencies, such as those within the Hiawatha National Forest (which manages many sites near Manistique), generally offer lower nightly rates compared to privately-owned, resort-style campgrounds, making quality camping accessible to more families.
-
Free Day Use Access: The fact that there's "No charge to park" for the day use area and walking trail is a significant "promotion" for locals who want to enjoy the lake and trails without an overnight stay.
-
Included Dump Station Use: The detail that the dump station is available with "no extra charge" (for campers) adds value, as some campgrounds charge a separate fee for this service.
-
Senior/Access Passes: For eligible Michigan residents (e.g., seniors, those with disabilities), federal passes like the America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass might offer discounted camping rates, as Colwell Lake is located within a National Forest.
-
First-Come, First-Served Sites: While sometimes challenging, the availability of "first come first served" sites offers flexibility for spontaneous trips, allowing locals to seize good weather without extensive pre-planning.
To get the most accurate and up-to-date information on fees, reservation policies, and any specific discounts, Michigan residents should consult the official website of the Hiawatha National Forest (which manages Colwell Lake Campground) or call the local forest ranger district office. Best place in the U.P to camp and spend time with family/friends in the summers when we were growing up and a lil as adults! Absolutely love this place and will cherish every memory there❤️
Best campground ever! Large sites with space and trees between them. Some have electric hook- ups, not sure about water at sites but you can fill at the dump station. no extra charge. Many of the campsites have direct access to the lake, and all have good, if not direct access. Some sites are first come first served. Colwell also has day use availability with parking. I'm not sure if there is a fee for day use; info on one of my pics. There's a huge day use area; the fishing pier can be used by all. There's a 2.25 walking trail around the lake. It is mostly flat and an easy walk. With camping season over, I still like to go for a walk. No charge to park, and there's a restroom at the trail head. Yay! There's a boat launch area; I don't recall if it's open off season. Watch for the pot holes on your way in! Love this place!
This has got to be my absolute favorite place on Earth! The campsites are spacious, and there is enough trees between the sites to give you privacy from your fellow campers. The lake is beautiful, and the host is friendly.
Great campground! We had lot 30 its very spacious and beautiful lot that faces the lake. Vault toilets but very clean. Nice beach to swim. We didn't had shore power but oy 22$ a night. Weather was perfect around 75F mid July so no needed AC or heat at night. Mosquitoes was a bit nuts even during the day. So def don't forget the spray or fogger so you can enjoy evening by the fire...Aldo nice 2mile hike or bike around the lake trail. We had a great time and I definitely recommend this place!
This was our 4th year going to the UP. We love Colwell Lake Campground. The camp hosts are always friendly and keep the place clean. Absolutely no wifi or cell signal anywhere on the grounds always good fishing(large mouth, Pike, blue gill, crappie, and perch) and better views. The camp sites are huge and always clean! The first 5 sites have electricity. None of the sites are full hookup, and none have water hookups. All of the lake front sites have a personal beach for each site! Great place to relax, unwind, and enjoy the outdoors. No showers, only restrooms. There is no park for the kids, but there is a 2 mile path following the lake. Hope this helps. Have fun and enjoy!
