Introduction / Overview
For Minnesota residents seeking a truly quiet and secluded North Woods camping experience, look no further than Cottonwood Lake Campground. Tucked away within the expansive Bowstring State Forest, this destination is a testament to the DNR's commitment to preserving primitive, low-impact recreation. This is not a state park with shower houses and visitor centers; it is a rustic haven designed to furnish only the basic needs of the camper, allowing for total immersion in nature.
Cottonwood Lake Campground is defined by its small scale and deep solitude. With a very limited number of campsites—typically around 10 to 11 drive-in sites—users consistently report a low-usage experience, often finding themselves with the campground entirely to themselves, even when nearby facilities are packed. This unique lack of crowds is the campground's primary appeal, offering a peace and quiet that is increasingly rare. It is managed by the Minnesota DNR and provides a classic State Forest camping adventure, complete with wooded, naturally-surfaced sites and the quiet backdrop of the surrounding forest and lake.
Location and Accessibility
Cottonwood Lake Campground is strategically located within the vast Bowstring State Forest in the north-central region of Minnesota, with the nearest community being Deer River, MN 56636. This positioning places it far enough from major population centers to ensure a secluded feel, while still being reachable for local campers.
The campground’s address is generally listed off Cottonwood Road in the Deer River area. Accessibility is straightforward for most vehicles, as the sites are of the drive-in variety, situated along a looped gravel road. It’s noted that the loop can be tight, making it best suited for standard vehicles, tents, or small RVs and trailers. The surrounding Bowstring State Forest, encompassing over half a million acres, is interlaced with forest roads, providing ample opportunity for exploration once camp is set up. The remoteness is precisely what contributes to its low-usage appeal, making the journey well worth the effort for those prioritizing tranquility.

Had a great time camping, just me and the dogs, literally. There was one other site taken for 1 night. Otherwise all to ourselves. Amazing it was that way as the other campgrounds nearby I went to were packed. The sites are beautiful, some with lots of shade and some with sun. A hand operated well pump and vault toilet were the only amenities, other than a fire ring and picnic table. The lake and access are about 50 yards away with a trail through the woods.

Aug 29, 2024 · wes andersonNice little campground, was very quiet when we were here. Has a hand pump for water, vault toilet, and dumpster for trash. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with grate for cooking. Not a lot very close besides the lake, but good for a night out for us.
