Introduction / Overview
North Star Campground, nestled within the magnificent Chippewa National Forest, is a true "Up North" gem perfectly suited for Minnesota residents seeking an authentic, rustic, and budget-friendly escape. Situated along the scenic Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway, this campground near Marcell provides a classic northern Minnesota experience without the hassle of advance reservations. With 38 campsites, North Star operates on a strict first-come, first-serve (FCFS) basis, making spontaneous weekend trips feasible—a rarity in today's crowded camping environment. This deliberate lack of an online reservation system and the incredibly low nightly fee of approximately $14 (as of 2022) establish it as arguably the best-value, drive-in rustic campground in the entire Midwest. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate the basics: a quiet, forested setting, direct lake access, and a focus on nature rather than numerous amenities. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the campground is a haven for anglers, swimmers, and anyone who wants to unplug from modern life and enjoy the simple beauty of the Chippewa National Forest.
Location and Accessibility
North Star Campground is strategically located approximately four miles south of the small community of Marcell and about 25 miles north of Grand Rapids, making it a convenient drive for many across the state. The campground’s official address places it directly along the famed MN-38, the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway—an area celebrated for some of the most beautiful scenery in northern Minnesota. This location is easily accessible for drive-in campers, with sites suitable for both tents and RVs (though without hookups). The campground sits atop a hill that gently slopes toward the beautiful North Star Lake. For those who value privacy, North Star excels. Camper reviews consistently praise the generous spacing and ample natural vegetation that provide good privacy between most of the off-lake sites. Conversely, a handful of highly-prized lakeside sites offer stunning views and immediate lake access, sometimes with private stairs down to the shore. A significant feature for local users is the site availability; since all sites are FCFS, prospective campers often find success securing a spot, even on the busiest of summer weekends, provided they arrive early in the day.
Services Offered
As a National Forest rustic campground, North Star is designed to furnish only the basic necessities, which contributes to its quiet, low-cost appeal. The services provided are focused on cleanliness and fundamental comfort.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
North Star Campground is an outstanding choice for Minnesota locals because it embodies the quintessential, non-commercialized Northern retreat. It serves the practical needs of the local user base perfectly, offering an incredible value at just $14 a night, which makes a multi-day family camping trip genuinely affordable. Critically, its first-come, first-serve policy caters to the spontaneous traveler—the Minnesotan who decides on a Friday morning to escape the city and can drive up without the risk of an online booking system being sold out months in advance. The site selection is excellent, offering a choice between the high-demand, view-rich lakeside spots or the wonderfully quiet and private off-lake sites nestled in the trees. With an excellent, sandy-bottom swimming area, great fishing, and its location on the beautiful Edge of the Wilderness Byway, North Star Campground offers a peaceful, reliable, and authentic Northwoods experience that is hard to match anywhere else in the state.
Excellent swimming area with a sand lake bottom. This campground sits atop a hill next to the lake. Several lakeside sites have a great view. Generator noise was prevalent throughout the sites nearest the waterfront during our visit, while the sites further inland were quiet and mostly unoccupied. The campground offers generous spacing and ample vegetation providing good privacy between most all of the off-lake sites. Prospective campers shouldn't have any issues getting a site here, even on the busiest of weekends. All sites are first-come, first-serve; no need to deal with online reservations and the additional fees they charge. As of 2022 this campground costs just 14 dollars a night. That's probably the best rate you'll find at a drive-in rustic campground with this level of services anywhere across the Midwest. Water is provided at two hand pumps. Several vault toilets appeared brand new and were clean.
Aug 08, 2022 · Greg KruegerToo many tourists. They litter alot. Also, the locals like to destroy the lake because they want nice shoreline. Ban all front facing sonar from lakes up here. The lakes aren't fertile enough except winnie leech red and lotw. Good day.
Jul 01, 2025 · RE: freshSimple, minimalist camping in a photogenic setting. Lake is stocked with muskie, the Host is gracious and efficient. Good, sandy swimming area. I've stayed here many times and enjoyed every time. There are two hand pumped wells but I do bring in my own water.
Jul 19, 2021 · Bradley (BradleyVic)Great quiet place to stay!
Jul 24, 2023 · Dcloudx1989xNice big roomy sites with several lakeside available. Lots of other sites. Had a camper pull their big boat right up to the trash ridden beach and leave it there; buoys may need to be used instead of just laying there by the beach.
