In the following sections, we'll delve deeper into the specifics of Deweese Campground, including its exact location and how to get there, the essential services it provides, its unique features and highlights, and important contact information. This comprehensive guide will help you plan your next peaceful getaway to one of Kansas's truly serene camping spots.

Location and Accessibility

Deweese Campground is located at 14 Horseshoe Ln, Pretty Prairie, KS 67570, USA. This address places it squarely within the scenic Cheney Wildlife Area, a significant natural resource in South Central Kansas. While the address indicates Pretty Prairie, it’s important for visitors to understand that the campground itself is nestled in a more remote, natural setting, about a mile off a paved road on a hard dirt or gravel road. While generally passable, especially for RVs and trailers, this road can become tricky or muddy during heavy rain, so checking weather conditions before your trip is advisable.

The campground's location within the Cheney Wildlife Area offers unique advantages for outdoor enthusiasts. This area is known for its diverse wildlife, including various bird species, and provides opportunities for nature observation and photography. The proximity to Cheney Reservoir means there are possibilities for water-based activities nearby, though Deweese itself focuses on land-based camping. For those who enjoy activities like fishing or boating, finding access points within the larger Cheney State Park and Wildlife Area might be an additional consideration for their trip.

Despite its secluded feel, Deweese Campground is relatively accessible from larger population centers in Kansas. It's roughly a 37-minute drive from Wichita, making it a feasible destination for a weekend getaway for many urban residents. This balance of being "away from it all" while still being within a reasonable driving distance is a major draw for Kansas locals. When navigating to the campground, following GPS coordinates to the entrance and then continuing down the dirt road is often the best approach, as more secluded sites are further in.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a primitive campground, Deweese Campground typically does not offer traditional promotions or special offers in the same way a private RV park or resort might. Its main "offer" is its free access for camping, which is a significant benefit for budget-conscious travelers and locals seeking an affordable outdoor experience. This free access is a consistent feature of the campground, provided by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) as part of the Cheney Wildlife Area. Since it operates as a public primitive camping area, there are no discounts, loyalty programs, or seasonal promotions. The value here lies in the unadorned beauty and quiet solitude it provides without a fee. Visitors should always check the official KDWP website or contact them directly for any updates regarding usage policies or potential changes, though free access has been a long-standing characteristic of Deweese Campground.

Contact Information

Beautiful and quiet! Popular with locals as I saw many come and go but no one bothered me. I was in the 1st big spot with a firepit but I drove further in and those spots are very secluded. Cell signal was not great even with a booster. I had 1 to 2 bars.

There were not a lot of people so it was fairly quiet. The camp two sites over from me did have a party but, they kept the music low and were very respectful. I was across from a restroom so, the first thing I did when I got there was clean it. Overall I was very impressed with the whole camp. I will be going back.

****EDIT**** By 11:00pm they had finally cut the music, but continued to talk loudly for a few minutes, vehicles start up and leave, and the occasional dog barking/yipping, still keeping the 3 stars because of how late it went. I guess we came on a weekend when they were having a party or something, other reviews mention nothing about the noise from the locals. This spot is beautiful! We showed up around 7pm and were the only ones, multiple spots with fire rings, by the time we were setting up camp another vehicle showed up but didn’t bother us. NOW…. When we showed up there was intermittent gunfire from one of the nearby homes to the east but it stopped by dusk….. then changed to INSANELY LOUD hip hop, club beats, and rap for going on 2 HOURS AT THE TIME OF WRITING (10:30pm). This was my first camping trip with my family, thankfully my kids are young enough I doubt they will remember, but sadly, CAMPER BEWARE!!! **PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT**

Truly a boondocking spot. It's great place for me but not for everyone. Pit toilets and no potable water, no playground or picnic spot but does have fire rings and a good tree canopy.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this campsite. I was here For two nights end of April 1 of May. They have pit toilet that was fairly clean and well-kept. Little dark in there but once my I suggested it was fine.
