Introduction / Overview
For New York residents yearning for a genuine and accessible escape to nature, Doherty's Mountain View Campground in Acra, NY, presents an ideal solution. Nestled in the stunning Great Northern Catskills of Greene County, this family-owned retreat has been a beloved destination for over forty years, creating memorable summer and seasonal experiences for countless campers, many of whom return year after year. The campground operates seasonally, typically opening from May 15th through October 15th, aligning perfectly with the prime New York camping season.
Doherty's is not just a place to park an RV or pitch a tent; it’s a community-focused destination where the owners, Bernie and Margaret Doherty, are known for their hands-on approach and friendly hospitality, fostering an atmosphere where campers feel welcome and supported. This deeply personal, family-run ethic is a key differentiator, providing a warmer, more engaging experience than larger, corporate-owned parks. The campground encompasses an expansive 40 acres, offering plenty of room to explore, relax, and enjoy the picturesque mountain vistas that give the location its name. For locals, it represents a well-established, dependable, and affordable home base for exploring all the natural and cultural attractions the Catskill region has to offer, from state parks and hiking trails to seasonal festivals. It successfully strikes a balance: quiet enough for a relaxing retreat, yet well-equipped with amenities for a fun family vacation.
Location and Accessibility
Doherty's Mountain View Campground is conveniently situated at 1077 Joseph Chadderdon Rd, Acra, NY 12405, USA. This prime location places it near several key Catskills towns, including East Durham, Windham, and Catskill, making it a central hub for regional exploration.
For users coming from the New York metropolitan area—a significant local market for Catskills recreation—the drive is direct and manageable. Acra is located a comfortable distance north of the city, typically around a two to three-hour drive, primarily utilizing the New York State Thruway (I-87). This accessibility is a crucial factor for New Yorkers planning weekend trips or longer summer vacations, as it minimizes travel time and maximizes time spent enjoying the outdoors. The proximity to major mountain destinations like Windham Mountain and Hunter Mountain means campers have convenient access to a variety of year-round activities, from hiking and fly-fishing in the summer to skiing in the winter (outside of the campground's operating season). Furthermore, the surrounding area is rich with attractions, including the Catskill State Park, which is a short distance away, offering endless opportunities for hiking and immersion in nature. The scenic drive alone, transitioning from urban sprawl to rolling Catskill hills, is part of the therapeutic appeal for local residents.

Doherty's Mountain View Campground is exceptionally well-suited for New York residents, especially families and long-term campers, for several compelling reasons. This accessibility makes it a realistic destination for quick weekend trips as well as extended vacations.
Secondly, the campground's decades-long operation under the same family ownership—with Bernie and Margaret at the helm—has cultivated a unique, friendly, and community-oriented atmosphere that is highly valued. For many New Yorkers, the search for an authentic, reliable, and welcoming retreat is paramount, and the presence of dedicated seasonal campers who form a supportive community is a huge draw. Doherty's is more than a campground; it’s an affordable, stable, and warm environment where local New Yorkers can reliably create their annual, nature-based memories right in the heart of the beautiful Catskills.

Great campground. Owners are very friendly and outgoing. The grounds need a little TLC, but this is a good family campground and what you would otherwise expect. They are making improvements which is encouraging. The poster who complained about the pool must have been trying to swim in it before it was open for the season. When open, the pool is very clean and fenced in. Pool is open until 8 pm. Friendly seasonal campers. The only downside, at least for us, is the excessive quad racing around the loop and in the fieldup top. It is not very relaxing to those who don't have quads. Unfortunately we are in the unpopular minority on this one. Entering our 5th year here.
Jun 04, 2023 · Jason TWife & myself have been camping here for close to 20 years. Excellent getaway to see and photgraph wildlife & fossel hunt. People are too cool for school, and we all help each other out when the need arises. Like Ed said Bernie is the man but dont forget Margaret the lady of the house. 👸🏻
