Eagle Rocks Campground About
For West Virginia locals yearning for a straightforward, scenic, and genuinely rustic outdoor experience, Eagle Rocks Campground, nestled within the magnificent Smoke Hole region of Upper Tract, WV, offers an ideal escape. This isn't your average commercial campground with extensive amenities, but rather a charming and affordable spot on private land, designed for those who appreciate the raw beauty of our state and the simple pleasures of riverside camping. If you're a local looking to pitch a tent, build a campfire under the stars, and wake up to breathtaking views of the South Branch of the Potomac River and dramatic cliffs, Eagle Rocks Campground is a hidden gem you'll want to discover.
Many of us in West Virginia seek out places that feel authentic, where the focus is on nature itself rather than elaborate distractions. Eagle Rocks Campground delivers precisely that. It’s a place where the sounds of the river and the crackle of a campfire define your experience, and the stunning scenery of the Smoke Hole Canyon provides a natural backdrop that few places can match. Whether you're an avid angler hoping to cast a line, a family looking for an affordable weekend getaway, or simply someone needing to unplug and unwind amidst the beauty of Almost Heaven, this campground offers a truly local and memorable outdoor adventure right here in West Virginia. Its appeal lies in its simplicity, its affordability, and its undeniably spectacular location, making it a perfect fit for residents who love to explore their own backyard.
Eagle Rocks Campground is situated in the scenic Smoke Hole area of Upper Tract, WV 26866, USA. This places it deep within one of West Virginia's most iconic and geologically dramatic regions—the Smoke Hole Canyon. The canyon is carved by the South Branch of the Potomac River, creating towering cliffs, dense forests, and a truly remote feel, while still being accessible enough for a comfortable trip from many parts of West Virginia.
Access to Eagle Rocks Campground, like other establishments within the Smoke Hole Canyon, typically involves navigating scenic, often winding, country roads. From major routes, you would generally turn onto Smoke Hole Road or a similar county road that leads into the canyon. While the exact turn-off for Eagle Rocks Campground specifically isn't always widely publicized as a major landmark, its location within the "Smoke Hole, Upper Tract" designation implies it is along one of the main thoroughfares or accessible side roads within this well-known area. Drivers should expect roads that are generally paved but can be narrow in sections, and it's advisable to drive carefully and enjoy the picturesque journey. Given its description as an "open campground" on private land, it's likely a pull-off or clearly marked entrance directly from a local road that runs parallel to the river. This ensures that while you feel immersed in nature, you're not dealing with extremely rugged or off-road access, making it suitable for most standard vehicles. Its location within the broader Smoke Hole region means it benefits from the area's established reputation for outdoor recreation and natural beauty, drawing visitors who specifically seek out this unique part of West Virginia.

Given the nature of Eagle Rocks Campground as a more rustic and straightforward camping experience on private land, explicit "promotions" or "special offers" in the traditional sense are less common compared to larger commercial establishments or resorts. Its primary "promotion" is its inherently affordable nightly rate of $10. This consistent, low price point is a significant draw for locals and budget-conscious travelers seeking a genuine outdoor experience without breaking the bank.
However, it's always a good idea for visitors to inquire directly if there are any unadvertised deals or considerations, particularly if planning a longer stay. While not guaranteed, possibilities could include:
-
Multi-Night Discounts: For stays exceeding a few nights, there might be a minor reduction in the nightly rate, though this is less likely for a site with such an already low baseline price.
-
Group Rates: If you're planning to bring a large group of campers, it doesn't hurt to ask if there's any special arrangement or rate for multiple tents/campers.
-
Seasonal Considerations: While the $10 rate appears consistent, sometimes very off-peak seasons might have minor adjustments or added value for loyal customers. This is speculative, however, given the simplicity of their operation.
The most significant "offer" from Eagle Rocks Campground remains its incredible value for money. For just $10 a night, you receive access to a prime riverside location, stunning views, a fire ring, and the convenience of on-site firewood and fishing supplies. This affordability, combined with the natural beauty, serves as its core appeal to local West Virginia campers.
As a privately owned, more rustic campground, direct contact information like a dedicated website or a publicly listed phone number specifically for Eagle Rocks Campground can sometimes be less readily available than for larger, more commercial operations. However, based on the provided address and the nature of similar local, private campgrounds, here’s how you would typically seek contact or arrive:
Address: Smoke Hole, Upper Tract, WV 26866, USA
It is important to note that without a specific phone number provided in the given information, direct phone contact for immediate inquiries might be challenging. In many cases of such private, cash-payment campgrounds, the "contact" is often made upon arrival. You would typically drive to the specified location, look for signage, and find an attendant or a self-pay station.
Therefore, the primary "contact" method is often simply arriving at the physical location with your $10 in cash and seeking out the designated pay area or attendant. The reviews indicate a straightforward system for payment and access to amenities like firewood and fishing supplies.
For any very specific or pre-arrival questions, one might try searching for "Eagle Rocks Campground" on local West Virginia tourism forums, outdoor recreation groups, or local Facebook community pages where previous visitors might share more informal contact details or tips. However, the provided information suggests a direct, on-site payment and access system is the norm.
Eagle Rocks Campground is exceptionally well-suited for West Virginia locals who appreciate the raw, unadorned beauty of our state and seek an authentic, budget-friendly camping experience. For just $10 a night, it offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in the stunning Smoke Hole Canyon. Unlike more developed campgrounds, Eagle Rocks provides a stripped-down, back-to-basics approach that resonates with those who truly love the outdoors without needing extensive amenities. This affordability is a major draw for residents looking for frequent, accessible getaways that won't strain the wallet.
The highlight for many locals will undoubtedly be the glorious views of the South Branch of the Potomac River and the dramatic cliffs that define the landscape. Waking up to such a vista, with the river just steps away for fishing or simply enjoying its calming presence, is a quintessential West Virginia experience. The provision of fire rings and the availability of firewood and fishing supplies on-site mean that campers have all the essentials for a traditional and enjoyable outing without needing to pack everything from home. The feedback about quiet neighbors further assures a peaceful and respectful environment, allowing for genuine relaxation and connection with nature. For West Virginians who value simplicity, breathtaking scenery, and an unpretentious outdoor adventure, Eagle Rocks Campground is not just a place to stay, but a destination that truly reflects the rugged beauty and welcoming spirit of our beloved Mountain State. It’s a local gem, perfect for creating lasting memories right in our own backyard.
Customer Reviews
$10 camping on private land includes glorious views of the river and steep cliffs, you can get a spot with a fire ring, on the river. Porta-potty is ok, neighbors quiet. Would recommend.
There is no Hotel here. This is an open Campground for campers and Tents along the river. It cost a $10 a night and you have access to fishing supplies and firewood for sale.
Great spot for bikepacking the Sods Circuit. First day for us was 75 miles with 7500 feet of climbing, so we were delighted to pull into camp. We were the only campers and had the river to ourselves. We were grateful for the spring water to fill our water bags!
Best overnight we had on week-long moto camping trip. Setting is spectacular, natives are friendly, a the sound of rushing water lulls you to sleep. Bring what you need. They have porta potties, which were spotless.
Need to go back, was just passing through the first time. West Virginia views never disappoint! Smoke Hole Rd & Eagle rock.
