Forbes State Forest Motorized Camping #1 is located in Rector, PA 15677, USA. While the address might seem straightforward, accessing this particular campsite requires a bit of preparation due to its secluded nature. It's nestled within the expansive Forbes State Forest, a significant portion of the Laurel Highlands region in southwestern Pennsylvania, spanning parts of Westmoreland, Somerset, and Fayette counties. The key to its seclusion is a gated access point, for which you receive a combination upon reserving your site. This gate ensures that only permitted campers can reach the site, contributing significantly to its private and undisturbed atmosphere. While seemingly remote, the Forbes State Forest is within a manageable driving distance for many Pennsylvanians. It's approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Pittsburgh, around 2 hours from Harrisburg, and about 3 hours from Philadelphia. Its location in Rector places it conveniently near popular attractions like the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail and Wolf Rocks, making it an excellent base for exploring the wider region. Visitors should be prepared for gravel forest roads leading to the site, and while many vehicles can access it, it's always wise to check road conditions, especially during inclement weather, as some forest roads can be rugged.

As a motorized campsite within Forbes State Forest, Forbes State Forest Motorized Camping #1 is part of a system of free, permit-required sites. The primary "promotion" is the value of a free, secluded camping experience in a beautiful state forest. Unlike commercial campgrounds that may offer seasonal discounts or package deals, the value here comes from the low-cost, high-quality wilderness experience it provides. The permit itself is free, making it incredibly accessible for anyone with the necessary camping gear and a desire for primitive adventure. It’s important to note that due to the limited number of these highly sought-after sites in Forbes State Forest (only 6 motorized campsites available), the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) often limits reservations to one permit per month per camping party. This policy ensures that more Pennsylvanians have the opportunity to enjoy these unique and valuable resources. While there aren't traditional "special offers," the intrinsic value of a free, private, and pristine camping spot in a state forest is a significant benefit for local outdoor enthusiasts.

Customer Reviews
Great isolation with a gate that you get the combination to go through. I've been to 6 total motorized campsites and this is my #1. There are three fire pits with one in the woods so you have options for pitching your tent. You're also right near Wolf Rocks.
Secluded spot that is gated off about a half mile from the rest of traffic. You will get the occasional through hiker or biker, but otherwise it feels like you have the woods to yourself. Two fire rings and a bonus one in the woods if you look for it. Really great place to spend time away from the rest of the world.
