Introduction / Overview
For New York residents seeking a truly tranquil, back-to-nature escape without surrendering the essential support of a state campground, Forked Lake Campground offers an unparalleled experience in the heart of the Adirondack Park. Managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), this destination is celebrated for its commitment to providing a wilderness setting that feels genuinely remote. It is not your typical drive-up campground; instead, Forked Lake is designed for the adventurous spirit, with the majority of its sites accessible only by boat or foot trail.
Situated on the pristine, 1,248-acre Forked Lake, the campground features approximately 80 campsites, many of which are large, well-forested, and offer exceptional privacy directly on the waterfront. This is a place where generations of New Yorkers have created lasting memories, as one dedicated customer noted, having come here "since I was in diapers." The general tone of the facility is one of rustic charm, professional management, and deep respect for the surrounding environment. It provides a unique opportunity for local users to disconnect from digital life and reconnect with the natural world through paddling, fishing, and fireside relaxation. The remoteness, combined with the comprehensive planning of the grounds, ensures a high-quality wilderness experience right here in New York State.
Location and Accessibility
Forked Lake Campground is ideally located in the Central Adirondacks, near the popular Village of Long Lake, New York. The physical address is 381 Forked Lake Campsite Rd, Long Lake, NY 12847.
Accessibility by road involves reaching the Village of Long Lake via the intersection of NYS Routes 28 and 30, and then following a series of local roads, including the North Point Road, to the campground entrance. While the journey places you deep within the wilderness, the site remains easily reachable for travelers from across New York State.
However, the distinctive feature of Forked Lake is the accessibility to the campsites themselves. While there are a limited number of drive-up sites, and a few small sites capable of accommodating RVs up to 20 feet, the bulk of the camping opportunities are designed for a more immersive experience.
Due to the predominantly boat-in nature, visitors are strongly advised to arrive with enough time before dark to paddle or hike safely to their designated spot.
Services Offered
The services at Forked Lake Campground are tailored to support a rustic, comfortable, and safe wilderness camping trip. The focus is on providing necessary provisions while preserving the integrity of the natural setting.
Features / Highlights
Forked Lake Campground’s greatest appeal lies in its distinct wilderness features and array of recreational activities, offering a classic Adirondack experience.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Forked Lake Campground is an indispensable resource for New York residents looking to fully unplug from the frenetic pace of modern life and reconnect with the state's magnificent natural heritage. The very act of paddling or hiking to a secluded campsite creates an immediate, satisfying sense of adventure and accomplishment. It is a world away from the noise and crowds of downstate areas, yet remains a safe and well-managed DEC facility.
The camp's remote character, emphasized by the boat-access-only sections and the requirement of using bear lockers, offers a true "wilderness experience" that is both challenging and profoundly rewarding. This is where New Yorkers can introduce their families to the enduring beauty of the Adirondacks, fish for native species, and sleep soundly under a vast, unpolluted night sky. The dedication of the staff and the lake's pristine environment, as consistently praised by decades of loyal customers, ensure that Forked Lake Campground will remain a beloved and essential destination for local users seeking a peaceful, traditional, and restorative camping vacation.

Idyllic. Canoe in to get off the beaten path. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful in making sure we had a place to stay for the night, especially Ethan. Each site on the water is equipped with a place to beach or dock a boat, an outhouse, and a bear locker for food/trash. Hope to be back here soon.
Jul 23, 2025 · alexI have been coming here since I was in diapers. One of the best places to camp, canoe, swim, fish and relax. Starting going here with my parents and brothers, in my teens and 20’s I took my best friends, now I get to take my husband. This lake is gorgeous, peaceful and the rangers over the many decades have been the best in the nation (in my humble option). I hope to come here for the rest of my life.
Aug 15, 2025 · Anne-Marie MungerWe stayed at site 46 and it was awesome! Beautiful moonrises, great sunrises, all tucked in a cozy little private cove! Pit toilets, bear boxes, picnic table and metal fire pit at our site and every other site, I’d assume. We’ll be back next year!
Oct 30, 2024 · wowitsc cIdeal location for camping by the lake. Check before booking if you will be able to take your vehicle to the actual site or not. Some of the site location you might have to use boat to go if you don’t wanna walk thru the forest. Don’t worry if you don’t have boat as canopy is available on rent just for $20. Also firewood is available on the camp site which is little costlier. Also camp manager is available on the site always and very helpful. Don’t miss the sunrise. Enjoy
