Introduction / Overview: Your Classic Adirondack Family Retreat
Golden Beach Campground, managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), is one of the most beloved and enduring camping destinations in the Central Adirondacks. Located directly on the stunning southeast shore of 5,935-acre Raquette Lake, this facility has been providing a quintessential New York camping experience for families since its development began in 1929. The campground is celebrated for its rare combination of expansive, well-forested sites and one of the largest natural sandy beaches in the region, making it exceptionally popular for swimmers and sunbathers.
With over 200 tent and trailer sites spread across a beautiful, wooded landscape, Golden Beach strikes a perfect balance between rustic Adirondack charm and essential family amenities. It attracts seasoned campers and first-timers alike, often drawing visitors from across New York State who return year after year. The atmosphere is friendly and community-focused, ideal for creating lasting summer memories. While its remote location on Route 28 ensures a peaceful escape, the nearby hamlet of Raquette Lake offers convenient access to local services and attractions.
The campground is known for its commitment to maintaining the natural environment, with sites that are often large, spacious, and thoughtfully spaced to afford a sense of privacy amidst the towering trees. As one long-time visitor noted, the sites are continually maintained and refurbished, ensuring a high-quality experience for all guests. It’s a place where the sounds of the loons on the lake mix with the laughter of children on the sand, embodying the best of New York’s mountain and lake recreation.
Location and Accessibility: Gateway to the Central Adirondacks
Golden Beach Campground is nestled in the heart of the Adirondack Park, situated on the south shore of Raquette Lake. Its physical address is RR 28, Raquette Lake, NY 13436, USA. This location places it conveniently on New York State Route 28, providing straightforward access for vehicles and trailers, a notable advantage over boat-access-only facilities in the area.
The campground’s position offers an immediate connection to the extensive waters of Raquette Lake, known for its 99 miles of shoreline and magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, which are part of the broader Adirondack High Peaks Region. For those traveling from downstate New York, it serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the wider Central Adirondacks. The charming village of Raquette Lake is only about three miles west on Route 28, offering restaurants, essential services, boat rentals, and scenic excursions. Furthermore, it is just a short drive—approximately eight miles east—to the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, a significant cultural attraction for New York history enthusiasts.
While the campground is easily accessible by road, visitors should be prepared for a true wilderness experience, which includes the possibility of wildlife sightings. Previous campers have noted encounters with black bears, underscoring the importance of adhering to the DEC’s guidelines for food storage and garbage disposal to ensure safety for both humans and animals in this beautiful, wild setting.

Its suitability lies in its robust, family-oriented infrastructure combined with an authentic, remote wilderness location that is nonetheless accessible via a main state route. For locals, it offers a compelling mix: the excitement of a high-quality freshwater beach, the convenience of hot showers and flush toilets, and direct access to expansive wilderness areas like the Blue Ridge Wilderness and Raquette Lake. This allows families to enjoy the wildness of the Adirondacks without sacrificing comfort, making it a perfect, multi-generational retreat.

It provides the chance to create enduring traditions, from roasting marshmallows over a campfire to viewing the mountain scenery from the middle of Raquette Lake, firmly cementing its status as a premier New York outdoor experience.

The sites are spacious and were well maintained. The park cycles through rehabilitation of sites. The beach is great. If you are looking to launch a boat, this launch is not very good but the local marina is great and near by.
Aug 17, 2025 · bruce pritchettCamped here many times in the last forty years. I brought my family camping here every year for twenty years. The Adirondack Mountains rise out of Raquette Lake in a wild and beautiful section of the Adirondack High Peaks Region. Be aware - we had a black bear shred our garbage in front of us one morning. The swimming area is a large sand beach. The bathrooms and showers are old but serviceable.
Mar 31, 2025 · Paul ZimmermanI read the reviews and seriously wondered if we’d stayed at a different campground. We stayed at a site down the street from the “main” campground. It’s pit toilet only, which has no lock and would potentially be shared with 4 other sites…. But even worse, when we arrived it was covered in excrement. It’s a short drive to the showers and they are warm with decent water pressure, but could use a really good sweeping. There is no spicket/water access at the sites which can make things tricky. It’s very basic and was very muddy where we stayed with puddles and free standing water in areas worsening the bug situation. There were several other empty sites nearby away from the standing water and when we went to asked to move to one, it was a few minutes after 5 and “bugs are everywhere” per the staff so we were SOL. It was a gloomy weekend so the amenities that seem to be the selling points for golden beach were non existent. We probably would not camp here again.
