This "amazing Texas park" offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, whether you prefer the sound of the ocean waves from your RV or a peaceful tent site closer to the bay's serene paddling trails.
The campgrounds at Galveston Island State Park are celebrated by visitors for their cleanliness, thoughtful design, and strategic location that puts both the beach and the bay within easy reach. From "super short walk to the beach" for ocean-side campers to dedicated areas for kayakers and paddleboarders on the north side, the park caters to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Reviews consistently highlight the "clean and spacious" restrooms and the overall well-kept grounds, ensuring a comfortable stay even in the wilder setting of a state park.
What truly makes Galveston Island State Park Campgrounds special for Texans is its dual-sided offering: the vibrant Gulf beach on one side and the tranquil bay-side wetlands on the other. This allows for diverse activities, from fishing and swimming to birdwatching and paddling, all within one well-managed state park. While mosquito repellent is a must, as any seasoned Texas camper knows, the rewards of this beautiful coastal sanctuary far outweigh the minor inconveniences.
Galveston Island State Park Campgrounds are centrally located at the Headquarters, 14901 FM3005, Galveston, TX 77554, USA. This address places the park on the western end of Galveston Island, offering visitors a prime slice of undeveloped Texas coastline. For Texans, this means a relatively easy drive to a true natural escape without venturing too far from major population centers like Houston.
The park is uniquely divided by FM3005, providing distinct camping experiences on both its north (bay) and south (beach) sides. This geographical feature is a significant advantage, as it allows guests to choose their preferred environment. RV sites and some tent spots are predominantly on the south side, closer to the beach, offering direct access to the Gulf. As one reviewer noted, "Every spot is a great spot when you’re next to the ocean. You can hear the ocean from camp, it’s a super short walk to the beach." This immediate proximity to the Gulf of Mexico is a major draw for Texans seeking beach activities.
The north side of the park, closer to the bay, is recommended for "tent camping, coming for kayaking, paddle boarding, or want to be closer to trails." This provides a different, often calmer, environment perfect for exploring the salt marshes and bay waters. While the park is not in the heart of Galveston's city amenities, its location on FM3005 provides relatively easy access to the island's main attractions, including restaurants, shops, and the historic Strand District, typically a short drive away. This balance of natural seclusion with accessible urban conveniences makes Galveston Island State Park an ideal spot for a Texan getaway.

Another amazing Texas park. Stayed in RV at campsite 43. Every spot is a great spot when you’re next to the ocean. You can hear the ocean from camp, it’s a super short walk to the beach, and the grounds are maintained super well. Concrete pads are still new looking, and pretty level. We didn’t have to do much leveling out. If you’re tent camping, coming for kayaking, paddle boarding, or want to be closer to trails, get a spot on the north side of the park. RV spots and tent spots on the south side, closer to the beach.
May 04, 2025 · J QA nicely arranged and well kept State Park, this is the place to go if you want to go to the beach and plan to stay overnight. Enjoy kayaking, fishing, and camping on both the North and South sides of Galveston. The restrooms are clean and spacious, and if there isn't a drought, the campsites are blanketed with a nice layer of grass to pitch your tent. In case you didn't know, fishing licenses are not required at Texas State Parks. One item your life will depend on: Mosquito repellant!
Nov 12, 2024 · MikeWe’re finishing up a two week camp here and, sure, we’ve had some bad weather but it’s December. The camp modern campground along the shore is well laid out with spacious sites that are well spaced. The restroom/showers are have lots of hot water and are adequately cleaned. The sinks’ water flow is dismal however and we don’t need roaring ceiling fans on these cold days. The shore is why we come here and combined with the other park features there’s always something to do. Neighboring Jamaica Beach has a nice variety of shops and Galveston is close by. Galveston can take many of your days and evenings for exploration as there is a lot of history preserved there. Bicycling on the beach is a favorite activity for us. Walking good too. See captions on photos for more.
Dec 14, 2023 · John CrankshawBeautiful park in winter, had some sunny days and was able to sleep with window open at night next to ocean. We saw a coyote running through the beach access, another camper was chasing it away. We were next to showers which made it convenient but noticed random strangers walking through #48, 47 (spaces closest to beach) to get to restrooms. Another good space is #26 although lots of traffic since it’s nearest to beach access. Showers have hot water, but building is cold, used portable propane heater to keep warm.
Jan 12, 2024 · Cristina HA gem of a park! Spots are spacious and every spot has its own cabana and picnic table. The cabanas have hooks for hammocks, which is great!! Just a short, flat walk to the beach! Area is very clean and well kept
