Introduction / Overview
For Minnesotans seeking the authentic, deep-woods experience of the Northwoods without the price tag or the complication of reservations, Harriet Lake Rustic Campground is an essential destination. Located within the Superior National Forest near the small community of Isabella, this campground epitomizes "amazing rustic camping."
As a designated "rustic" campground under the U.S. Forest Service, Harriet Lake offers a back-to-basics experience focused on nature, solitude, and recreation. It features a small number of drive-in campsites—typically six—that are offered on a strict first-come, first-served basis, meaning visitors must arrive prepared and accept the possibility of the campground being full during peak times. A key feature that draws local adventurers is the fact that this is a
While the amenities are minimal—there is no potable water or garbage service—the campsites themselves are often described as "huge" with "ample space between each site," providing a high degree of privacy that is increasingly hard to find. The primary draw is Harriet Lake itself, a prime location for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing, managed for species including walleye, northern pike, and black crappie. This is the place for those who love to pack it in, pitch a tent, and enjoy the pure quiet of a Minnesota wilderness night.

Simple campground for fishing/kayaking. No swimming/beach area. Out the back side of our huge (at least 5 campers and multiple tents could fit!) was a short walk to a old gravel pit that the kids played in for hours. Would definitely return.
Jul 23, 2025 · Renee Olsen-GravelleAmazing rustic campground. No water source or garbage service. Just amazing camping. Walleye, Pike, crappie and perch are all in the lake to catch. Nice modern pit toilet. Blueberries and raspberries abundant when in season. Stop down to the trestle Inn for dinner excellen food and drinks. Say hi to Sara , Kathy or Sue.
Jul 13, 2024 · Charles WintersOne of my favorite places to camp! Lots of water sized walleyes in the lake that are easily caught. Out of the way so very limited traffic there. In my opinion one of the most peaceful campgrounds I have ever stayed at!
May 15, 2025 · Jeremy LushineWe camped here 4th of July weekend. We ended up picking this place because the sites at the top were very spread out and private. Site #5 was the best view on my opinion. Caught a couple of northern and 1 walleye. We will definitely go back again someday!
Jul 04, 2023 · Hope MBusy...at least the weekend I was there. Can't see the lake very well, just not my favorite campground in the area. The rustic camping spots are numbered, 9 in total I think, but they're so big, you end up sharing your spot whether you want to not.
