Introduction / Overview
Tucked away in the beautiful, peaceful countryside of Mifflin County, just past the historic borough of McVeytown, lies Harshbarger's Campground—a true hidden gem for Central Pennsylvania residents seeking a quiet, authentic outdoor experience. Praised by local patrons as the "best kept secret in Mifflin County," this destination is the antithesis of the large, heavily commercialized resorts. It offers a genuine escape, where the pace is slow, the sites are roomy and shaded, and the background noise is primarily the gentle flow of the nearby Juniata River.
Harshbarger's is designed for the camper who values tranquility, nature, and a clean, well-maintained environment. The atmosphere is distinctly family-oriented, with a clear focus on the safety and comfort of all guests, including children and pets. This commitment to a peaceful, respectful environment is evident in the carefully enforced, low-speed limits throughout the property, ensuring a safe and relaxed setting for everyone. Its location along the historic Juniata River, a major waterway in the Commonwealth, makes it an ideal spot for those who enjoy riverside relaxation and the gentle rhythms of nature. The campground provides essential services while retaining a charming, country-style simplicity that resonates deeply with the local Pennsylvania camping community. It's the perfect spot to set up a seasonal camper or to enjoy a brief, rejuvenating weekend trip without having to travel outside the region.
Location and Accessibility
Harshbarger's Campground is located in a lovely, secluded area of Mifflin County, with its mailing address listed as Mcveytown, PA 17051, USA. Its exact location is purposefully "way out in the country," offering the kind of quiet solitude that is increasingly difficult to find. The journey takes you along country roads and past scenic cornfields, building the anticipation for the peaceful retreat that awaits.
While the campground feels remote, it serves as an excellent home base for exploring the rich recreational and historical landscape of the Juniata River Valley. The facility sits directly alongside the Juniata River, a popular spot for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing, making river access a primary feature for guests. Furthermore, its Central Pennsylvania location provides relatively easy access to several state parks and forests, including Greenwood Furnace State Park, Fowlers Hollow State Park, and Whipple Dam State Park, all within a reasonable driving distance for a day trip of hiking, biking, or exploring. This strategic position allows local Pennsylvanians to immerse themselves in nature without needing to embark on a distant, cross-state journey. The commitment to maintaining a 5 mph speed limit from the main road turn-off through the campground underscores the management's priority of a safe, relaxed country setting, regardless of the perception of speed on the straight approach.
Services Offered
The services at Harshbarger's Campground are focused on providing a comfortable and well-equipped environment for RV and tent campers, ensuring that the necessary modern conveniences are available while preserving the rustic charm of the location.

Beautiful, peaceful campground! Best kept secret in Mifflin County! I would give it 5 stars but for the privatly owned spots across the river were disrespectful at times. RV sites have water and electric. He provides septic dump, garbage removal and showers. Nice, shady, roomy sites.
Jul 13, 2018 · Colena MartinNice quiet place along the Juniata River way out in the country past McVeytown. They have a 5 mph speed limit in the campground which is fine and protects all the kids and pets. The thing is when you turn off the road to get to the main campground, you have about 1/4 to 1/2 mile that goes past cornfields the insist you drive 5 mph on too. Straight road so you can see people coming. 10 or 15 mph here would be fine but 5 mph makes no sense. Corn is not going to run out in front of you and kids not on this part of the road.
