This article aims to provide a factual and engaging overview of Hideaway Campground, drawing on available public data and customer feedback. Hideaway Campground is conveniently located at 9671 Silver Lake Rd, Mears, MI 49436, USA. This address places it squarely within the highly popular and unique Silver Lake Sand Dunes area of West Michigan. Mears is a small but vibrant community in Oceana County, known primarily as the gateway to the massive sand dunes and the beautiful Silver Lake.
The campground's position on Silver Lake Road provides excellent accessibility. It's located just "outside of the hustle and bustle of the downtown area" but remains incredibly close, "only maybe a 5 minutes to everything." This means campers can enjoy a slightly quieter setting while still having quick and easy access to all the main attractions and essential services that the Silver Lake area offers. Whether you need to grab supplies, visit a restaurant, or head to the dunes, everything is within a very short drive.
The Silver Lake Sand Dunes are a major draw to this region, offering unique opportunities for off-road vehicle (ORV) recreation, dune buggy rides, and simply exploring the vast expanse of sand that meets Lake Michigan. Hideaway Campground serves as a practical base for those looking to experience these thrilling activities.
Beyond the dunes, the location also offers convenient access to Silver Lake itself for swimming, boating, and fishing. The stunning Lake Michigan coastline, with its beautiful beaches and picturesque sunsets, is also just a short drive away, providing even more recreational options. While the primary focus of the area is on the dunes and lake, nearby communities like Hart and Pentwater offer additional dining, shopping, and small-town charm. The strategic placement of Hideaway Campground ensures that guests can easily reach all the action while having a defined space to return to at the end of the day.
Hideaway Campground aims to provide a functional and enjoyable camping experience, particularly catering to seasonal residents, while also accommodating shorter stays. Based on customer reviews, the campground offers a core set of services designed for convenience and recreation.
- Campsites (Mostly Seasonal): The campground primarily features "mostly seasonal spots," indicating that many sites are rented for the entire camping season. However, they also accommodate transient campers, as evidenced by a review mentioning renting a camper and staying in one of the "pull through spots." This suggests a mix of site types, likely including full hookups for RVs.
- Pool Area: A "nice little pool area to cool off while you’re hanging at the campground" is a significant service, especially during warm Michigan summers. This provides a communal spot for relaxation and recreation.
- Shower Facilities: Showers are available for campers. While one review expresses skepticism about the cleaning frequency, they are ostensibly "cleaned twice a day and are closed for said cleaning." Access to showers is a fundamental service for most campgrounds.
- Restroom Facilities: Alongside showers, restroom facilities would be provided for all campers.
- Friendly Staff: The "staff was friendly" and "friendly and helpful," indicating a commitment to guest service and creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
- Access to Recreational Activities: While not a direct service of the campground itself, its location provides easy access to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes and nearby water activities on Silver Lake and Lake Michigan.
It is important for prospective campers, especially those considering short-term stays, to contact Hideaway Campground directly to confirm site availability, specific amenities included with each site (e.g., hookups), and to inquire about the current state of facilities. While reviews provide general insights, direct communication ensures the most accurate and up-to-date information for planning your trip.

For Michiganders, Hideaway Campground in Mears offers a practical and appealing option for experiencing the unique charm of the Silver Lake area. Its suitability for local residents stems from its convenient location, its focus on community, and the specific amenities it provides.
Firstly, the campground’s location is a significant advantage for locals. Being "outside of the hustle and bustle of the downtown area" yet "only maybe a 5 minutes to everything" means residents can enjoy a slightly more relaxed atmosphere while still having incredibly quick access to the main attractions of Silver Lake. For those who own ORVs or enjoy the thrill of the sand dunes, Hideaway Campground provides an excellent, close-by base for their adventures, allowing for more time on the dunes and less time commuting. Its proximity to Silver Lake and Lake Michigan also means easy access to beaches, swimming, and boating – quintessential Michigan summer activities.
Secondly, the emphasis on "mostly seasonal spots" fosters a sense of community among campers. For Michiganders who love to return to the same beloved vacation spot year after year, this setup can create a true "home away from home" atmosphere, allowing for familiar faces and shared experiences. Even for short-term visitors, the reported friendliness of both staff and fellow campers contributes to a welcoming environment. The presence of a "nice little pool area" is also a great amenity for families, providing a convenient way to cool off and relax within the campground without needing to leave the property.
While the sandy sites and some concerns about shower cleanliness are noted, these are often expected aspects of camping in a dune-heavy region, and something Michiganders are generally prepared for. The overall positive experience, with guests stating "Definitely will be back!", suggests that the benefits—friendly staff, convenient location, and a pleasant pool—outweigh any minor drawbacks for many. For locals seeking an accessible, community-oriented, and functionally equipped campground in the heart of Michigan's popular Silver Lake region, Hideaway Campground offers a solid choice for creating lasting summer memories.
Customer Reviews
Decent campground, mostly seasonal spots. Grass does not grow well in these parts, so most of the sites are sand, which is fine/expected. The showers are apparently cleaned twice a day and are closed for said cleaning. They were pretty gross, so I'm a little skeptical they actually get cleaned that often, but it is what it is.
Came in July with my son and husband, and had a fantastic stay at Hideaway. Staff was friendly and as was everyone we met while staying there. Nice little pool area to cool off while you’re hanging at the campground. We rented a camper and stayed in one of the pull through spots. The campground is outside of the hustle and bustle of the downtown area but only maybe a 5 minutes to everything. Definitely will be back!
Best campground in the silver lake area. I’ve been coming here for 30 years now. Super fun and safe for all ages. I was sad to see the main office/shop burnt down.
This campground was my first ever rv trip, so I will give a different perspective. The campground has 70-89% seasonal sites, which I translated to being long-term ones. Some in their reviews have called this place a trailer park. Maybe at times while taking a walk, it felt like I'm in someone's property as some have built decks, etc. The place has okay washrooms and showers, which I very much needed as my rv's shower and bathroom were too rv'ish for our first timer liking. There were many spots open in the campground, which suggests that folks don't prefer this to the silver lake state campground. The people managing site or more permanent residents , which has also come across in a few reviews , to me seemed nice as I felt good speaking with them. Long term vs short term don't work in such a setting. Would I come here again? Perhaps NO. SItes are small and unlevel, which made parking and finding level tricky for my rental rv with no leveling system in it. Another reason is that I'm not a seasoned camper or rv er and I think I prefer a campground where no one is permanent or long term. Nothing against anyone, just don't want the feeling that I got here.
Very nice facilities. Close to the dunes. The restaurant pizza is scrumptious. Camping neighbors were all kind. Campground staff helped after a mixup with our sites. We’ve stayed here twice. I appreciate campground staff for keeping the bathrooms clean and supplies refreshed. We very much enjoyed our stay and will return.
