Welcome to the essential guide for New York locals seeking an authentic and stunning escape into nature. For those in the Tri-State area yearning for a true break from the urban intensity, the answer lies in the tranquil, breathtaking landscapes of Upstate New York. High Falls Park Campground stands out as a premier destination, offering not just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV, but a gateway to one of the region's most spectacular natural wonders: the majestic High Falls Park.
This facility, situated in the picturesque setting of Chateaugay, New York, provides a perfect blend of comfortable outdoor living and unparalleled access to pristine nature. It’s an ideal choice for weekend warriors, family vacationers, and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts alike. The promise here is simple yet profound: exceptional service, well-maintained sites, and immediate proximity to a natural experience praised by visitors for its "outstanding" quality and professional stewardship. Forget the crowded, commercialized spots—this is where genuine, high-quality outdoor recreation is done right.
The core appeal is, without a doubt, the magnificent waterfall that gives the park its name. The cascading waters tumble gracefully down rocky terrain, creating spectacular vistas and an unforgettable show. The park's commitment to excellence, reflected in its clean facilities, thoughtful trail design, and conservation efforts, extends directly to the experience offered at the adjacent campground, making it a reliable and rewarding choice for your next adventure.
The drive from the greater New York City area to High Falls Park Campground is an adventure in itself, marking a true transition from the concrete jungle to the serene beauty of the North Country. Located at 34 Cemetery Rd in Chateaugay, NY 12920, the campground is strategically positioned in the far northern reaches of Upstate New York, a region characterized by rolling hills, expansive forests, and clean mountain air, placing it near the Adirondack foothills.
While a significant drive for those coming from the five boroughs, Long Island, or New Jersey, the journey is rewarded by an environment that feels truly removed and revitalizing. The remoteness guarantees a profound sense of peace and quiet unavailable closer to metropolitan areas. Chateaugay offers easy access via major regional routes, ensuring that navigation is straightforward once past the capital region. This location makes the campground a prime base camp for exploring not only the famous waterfall but also the broader attractions of Franklin County and the stunning, unspoiled wilderness of the Adirondack Park. For local New Yorkers seeking to truly reset and immerse themselves in the deep nature that their state offers, this accessible, yet secluded, location is precisely the change of pace needed.
The campground’s accessibility features are thoughtfully designed to accommodate diverse visitor needs, ensuring that the natural beauty and well-managed facilities are available to everyone. From well-maintained entry roads to level parking areas and clearly marked pathways, the facility prioritizes a smooth and stress-free arrival and stay, a detail often appreciated by families and those traveling with larger vehicles or RVs.
The High Falls Park Campground is structured to provide comfort and convenience, allowing campers to focus entirely on relaxation and natural exploration. While specific availability varies by season, the typical services offered by a professional facility of this caliber, especially one linked to a major natural attraction, are designed to meet all necessary requirements.
The campground offers a variety of site types to suit different preferences, including tent sites nestled closer to nature, and RV sites. RV accommodations typically feature options for full or partial utility hookups, including electric, water, and often sewer access, catering to modern comfort while enjoying the outdoors.
For those traveling in recreational vehicles, standard utility services such as 30 and 50 amp electric service are generally available, alongside reliable fresh water connections. A convenient dump station is usually provided on-site for easy waste disposal at the end of a stay, maintaining cleanliness and environmental standards.
A core commitment of the park management is cleanliness. This extends to the campground’s communal facilities, which include clean restrooms and hot shower blocks. These facilities are regularly serviced, reflecting the "professional management standards high" noted by visitors to the adjacent park.
Beyond the immediate camping sites, the facility often provides designated areas for communal activities, such as fire rings, picnic tables at each site, and perhaps a small playground or recreational field, fostering community and family fun during the stay.
The primary service is the immediate, easy access to High Falls Park. Campers benefit from being steps away from the main attraction, allowing them to experience the falls during less crowded morning and evening hours, a significant advantage over day visitors.
The true allure of a stay at High Falls Park Campground lies in the spectacular features of the adjacent High Falls Park, which is the undisputed highlight of the region and the reason most visitors choose this location.
The main attraction is the powerful, magnificent waterfall. Viewing opportunities are optimized by professional trail infrastructure and viewing platforms that position guests at optimal observation points. The natural acoustics amplify the waterfall's thunderous roar, providing a truly immersive, sensory experience that defines the location.

Options exist for various fitness levels, with noted paths leading down to the bottom of the falls; careful guidance ensures visitors can choose the path most comfortable for their mobility, demonstrating a high level of visitor consideration.

Aug 24, 2025 · Michael TheriaultA must see for the falls. If you go down to the bottom of the falls take the path to the left the makeshift steps are much easier. Going to the right the steps are very steep i have vertigo and would not recommend that route. Absolutely beautiful and stunning water fall
May 14, 2025 · Hookha 2006Wish I could figure out how to come here more often, because it is such a great spot! We were on a road trip from Wisconsin to Maine and stopped here for a night. What a treat! The wooded hike is so pretty and peaceful with board walks for fishing and the sounds of falling water at the High Falls is really special. The fall itself is one of the natural wonders of nature - really spectacular! The campground itself is also a pretty wooded setting with lots of amenities. Someone spent a lot of time making beautiful rock fire rings at every site. They have a great playground and a big open field for ball games. They also have a pavilion and it looks like they host Barbecues, Food Trucks and other fun happenings. We had trouble with our Winnebago tires and a camper and the owner came to our rescue! Such nice people. Make your route include High Falls Park Campground - you won't be disappointed.
May 04, 2025 · Cyndy ReichgeltThis was the first time I’ve been here. I came just to see the waterfall. The girl behind the counter was incredibly nice and provided great directions to get to the falls. No backpack allowed and $5 for adult. It’s downhill and involves a few sets of stairs. Along the way you’ll see some fascinating rock structures. A little less then a mile to get there since the first outlook is closed due to repairs. This was easy enough for me and my 15 year old daughter. The waterfall was truly beautiful and a must see!
