Location and Accessibility
Historic Hune Covered Bridge Campground is located on Cullen Rd, Wingett Run, OH 45789, USA. This unique location is nestled within Washington County in southeastern Ohio, renowned for its rolling hills and picturesque river valleys. The campground sits just below the historic Hune Covered Bridge, spanning the Little Muskingum River. While the bridge itself is currently closed to vehicular traffic due to land slippage (as of September 2020), it remains a beautiful historical feature that is easily visible and accessible by foot from the campground.
Accessing the campground now requires following a detour. From Route 26 north of the Hune Covered Bridge, near Wingett Run, campers should take Scottown Road (Twp. Rd. 35) across the Little Muskingum River. After a short drive, turn right onto Smith Road (Twp. Rd. 408) and follow it south along the river until you reach the campground. This route ensures direct access to the four available campsites. Despite the reroute, the peaceful, somewhat secluded location contributes to its quiet charm, making it a perfect escape. The nearest sizable town for amenities is Marietta, located about 12 miles south, offering a broader range of services, dining, and historical attractions.
Services Offered
Features / Highlights
Promotions or Special Offers
Historic Hune Covered Bridge Campground operates on a straightforward, low-cost fee structure, offering camping for $10 per night. Given its rustic nature and management by the U.S. Forest Service (Wayne National Forest), it does not typically offer complex promotions or special discounts. The affordable nightly rate itself is a continuous "special offer" compared to many other campgrounds with more amenities. There are no reservations taken; it operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with payment made via a self-registration box at the entrance.
For any potential updates on fees, seasonal closures, or specific group policies (though unlikely for a campground of this size), it is always best to refer to the official Wayne National Forest website for the Hune Bridge Campground or contact their main office. However, campers should generally anticipate the stated $10 nightly fee as the standard cost for their stay, reflecting its value as a primitive, scenic, and access-oriented campground.
Contact Information
For general inquiries about the campground, operational dates, or conditions of the access roads/trails, it is recommended to contact the Wayne National Forest Supervisor's Office or the Marietta Unit directly at the provided number. Remember, reservations are not taken for sites at this campground; it operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For Ohio locals, Historic Hune Covered Bridge Campground offers a genuinely unique and accessible opportunity to immerse themselves in both the natural beauty and rich history of their state. Its charm lies in its simplicity and direct connection to iconic Ohio landmarks and landscapes. If you're a resident looking for a rustic escape, a quiet spot for fishing or kayaking on the Little Muskingum River, or a new hiking adventure, this campground delivers without requiring extensive travel or a hefty budget.
The incredibly affordable $10 per night fee makes it an ideal choice for budget-conscious families, solo adventurers, or groups of friends seeking a no-frills, authentic camping experience. The campground's location directly by the historic Hune Covered Bridge provides a tangible link to Ohio's past, while the direct access to hiking trails and the river encourages active engagement with the present. It's a place where you can truly unplug, appreciate the tranquility of nature, and discover a lesser-known gem within the Wayne National Forest. For Ohioans valuing historical significance, outdoor recreation, and peaceful simplicity, Historic Hune Covered Bridge Campground is a perfect local getaway.

What a beautiful location to visit. The covered bridge is amazing! Sadly, some people don't have any respect for history.
Sep 09, 2023 · Bud JacksonNice campground. Quite during the week but on the weekend the locals use it as a parking lot and drop off point for the river. I was in the big site next to river came back from town and some jerk had parked in the drive to my site and left to go down river 😡. All that was said when they returned is it's not a big deal we do it all the time. Also if you are taking a small camper the driveways on 3 of the 4 sites are are the wrong side. You will be opening your door to the adjacent site if you back in.
Sep 26, 2017 · James BlackNice little campground. It only has 3 spots though. Mostly quiet, but there were a Eurosong number of people going in and out for access to the river. Only facility is a pit toilet. Only a few minutes from many of the trails in the Marietta section of Wayne National Forest.
Jun 15, 2019 · Ford McElroyGreat little campground. The bridge is closed, so make sure you follow the NF Website detour directions to get to the camping area (I didn't pay attention, since I had been to the area before): "Hune Covered Bridge is currently closed due to a land slippage. To access the campground, please follow the detour route below. From Route 26 North Of Hune Covered Bridge, Near Wingett Run: Take Scottown Road (Twp. Rd. 35) across the Little Muskingum River. After a short drive, turn right onto Smith Road (Twp. Rd. 408). Follow Smith Rd./408 south along the river until you reach the campground."
Nov 14, 2020 · William DePaepe3-4 non-electric sites next to the Little Muskingum river. Very peaceful and quiet area. Pit toilet at site. Camp sites have fire rings and picnic tables. Nice access to shallow river for kids and dogs to play in supervised. Note that the Park Ranger, who visits occaisionally is rather firm about having dogs leashed.
