Iowa, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and welcoming communities, holds a true natural marvel in its western region: the unique Loess Hills. These wind-deposited formations create a dramatic and ecologically significant environment, unlike anywhere else in the world. For Iowans seeking to connect with nature, whether for a quick weekend getaway or a longer outdoor adventure, the Hitchcock Nature Center Campground in Honey Creek offers an ideal base to explore this extraordinary area.
Hitchcock Nature Center Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV; it's a gateway to nearly 1,500 acres of preserved prairie, savanna, and woodlands. It caters to a wide range of campers, from those who prefer the comforts of an RV with hookups to intrepid tent campers seeking a more rustic, walk-in experience, and even those venturing into true backcountry primitive sites. Past visitors consistently praise the "beautiful setting" and the helpfulness of the park rangers and hosts, creating a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere. While some facilities might have seasonal opening hours, the overall consensus is that this campground provides a fantastic opportunity to immerse oneself in Iowa's natural beauty.
Managed by Pottawattamie Conservation, the campground and the wider Hitchcock Nature Center are dedicated to both conservation and education. This ensures that visitors not only have a wonderful time but also gain a deeper appreciation for the unique ecosystem of the Loess Hills. For any Iowan looking for a versatile and enriching outdoor experience, Hitchcock Nature Center Campground offers a compelling blend of accessibility, diverse camping options, and unparalleled natural beauty right in their own backyard.
Hitchcock Nature Center Campground is centrally located at Ski Hill Loop, Honey Creek, IA 51542, USA. This address places it firmly within the globally significant Loess Hills of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, just north of Council Bluffs and approximately 25 minutes from Omaha, Nebraska. The strategic location provides a convenient escape from the city while plunging visitors into a unique natural landscape.
The campground is easily accessible via I-29, taking the Honey Creek exit. The main entrance leads directly to the Loess Hills Lodge and various parking areas. For RV campers, the modern campground features 18 spacious RV sites with easy drive-in access. However, it's important for tent campers to note that many "tent only sites are walk-in." The park's roads are well-maintained, ensuring accessibility even during winter months, though some facilities like water spigots and flush restrooms may have seasonal availability. Hitchcock Nature Center Campground is a great place to camp, and the Park Ranger was very helpful. Just a heads-up though: the restrooms don’t open until closer to May. Fortunately, the water spigots were turned on a day or two after we arrived (in mid-March), which made things easier. Overall, we had an enjoyable stay and would go there again.
Apr 15, 2025 · Sally AnhaltBeautiful setting. FYI: tent only sites (which are lovely) are walk-in. You can’t park at your site, you park at the top of the hill. There is a vault bathroom by the parking lot, and flush toilets and showers available, but not really waking distance (would be a 10-15 min walk uphill). These were closed when we were hoping to use them. Tent only fee was only $10 and you submit your payment in an envelope. The hosts broke my change. Helpful hosts, though the park office wasn’t open the whole time we were there.
Jun 17, 2022 · Katie O'BeirneWe had planned to stay here as it said it included tent camping online. When we got there and looked to set up, all the tent sights were hike-in with no camping out of vehicle tent sights, which was not clear from the site. Also the second we pulled up, they had a loud and obnoxious sign indicating that they are anti-second amendment, which is not good, especially for people traveling cross country who have their permits. Do not stay or support this business. We didn't and found a better spot 30 miles north that was very accommodating and 2nd amendment friendly.
