For Illinoisans seeking an authentic outdoor experience that evokes the natural beauty of the Deep South right here in their home state, Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area-West Campground offers a truly remarkable retreat. This state-run campground, nestled within the expansive Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area, provides a serene and somewhat primitive setting for campers, RV enthusiasts, and nature lovers. It's a place where the towering bald cypress and tupelo gum trees create a unique landscape, reminding visitors of more southern climes, and where the sounds of abundant wildlife fill the air.
Unlike some highly developed campgrounds, the West Campground emphasizes a connection with nature, offering well-spaced sites that provide a sense of privacy and tranquility. Visitors consistently praise the beautiful views of the cypress trees in the lake and the quiet atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for those looking to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. April 2025 The location, lake and camp spots are 5 stars. The toilets and outhouses are 2 stars. FCFS, with drop box to pay. Very weak cell signal. Spots are well spaced, and views of the cypress trees in the lake are beautiful. It is quiet with lots of wild life sounds. Mature trees abound. In my mid week visit I was the only camper. The vault toilets are in disrepair, and not recently pumped. The bathroom is rough. No dump station here, but there is one at the east side camp. The dock at the boat ramp at camp is fine, and the boat ramp looks serviceable. There are a number of other docks that are falling apart.
Apr 25, 2025 · James JenkinsGood fishing even without boat. Surprisingly great camping. State run off season electric and water. Self serve w/ host. Only $8 for tents! Quiet and spaced out. I had one bar LTE Unboosted (t mobile and att) spring 23.

May 11, 2025 · Mary TaylorBeautiful and peaceful but Beware the electricity and/or water are not working at some sites and there is no way to know which amenities are no longer working without test them yourself. Also restrooms and pit toilets were dirty and lacking toilet paper, soap, etc
