Kabetogama, MN 56669, USA
Minnesota's Northwoods are home to some of the most pristine and sought-after camping destinations in the country, and C. Vic Linsten Campsite (K5) stands out as a premier spot for larger families and groups seeking an authentic wilderness experience. Located deep within the majestic Voyageurs National Park (VNP) on the iconic Kabetogama Lake, this is not your typical drive-up campground. It is a designated 'Large Campsite,' accessible exclusively by watercraft, offering a superb combination of necessary amenities and remarkable privacy. For Minnesotans who cherish time spent on the water, fishing, and gathering with extended family or friends, K5 C. Vic Linsten Campsite provides the ideal base camp for exploring the interconnected waterways and Boreal forests of the international border region. It’s a place where the grandeur of the wilderness meets the comfort of a well-maintained National Park site.
C. Vic Linsten Campsite, identified as K5, is beautifully situated on the shores of Kabetogama Lake. While its official address is listed under Kabetogama, MN 56669, USA, its true wilderness location means it is wholly separated from mainland road access.
As a frontcountry campsite in Voyageurs National Park, K5 is a boat-in only destination. This ensures a quiet, remote atmosphere untouched by vehicles. Visitors typically begin their journey from the Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center or the Ash River Visitor Center, both of which provide excellent boat launch facilities, ample parking for vehicles and trailers, and essential information services. The Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center is particularly convenient, located only about four miles from the campsite.
The approach to the campsite is made easier by its designated sand landing. Unlike rock-strewn sites, a sand landing provides a smoother area to beach smaller boats, canoes, or kayaks for unloading and provides safe, easy water access for swimming and wading. While this site does not feature a dedicated dock (unlike some other VNP sites), the expansive sand landing is a highlight, especially for groups with children or those carrying in bulkier camping gear.
As a National Park Service Large Campsite, C. Vic Linsten (K5) is specifically designed to accommodate larger groups while maintaining the highest standards of environmental preservation and visitor comfort. It is strictly a tent-only site, supporting multi-day wilderness adventures.
The services and facilities provided at Campsite K5 include:
Group Capacity: The site is designated as a Large Campsite, built to accommodate a maximum of 18 people, making it ideal for two families or a large group gathering.
Tent Platforms: Four separate, leveled tent pads are provided (with approximate measurements of 14'x14', 14'x14', 14'x13'6", and 13'x13'). All tents must be placed on these pads to protect the natural ground cover.
Dining/Gathering Area: Two sturdy metal picnic tables are available, providing ample seating for group meals and card games.
Cooking Facilities: One metal fire ring with an attached cooking grate is available for campfires and outdoor cooking. Visitors must use only dead and downed wood found nearby or bring DNR-approved firewood.
Secure Food Storage: Four large, bear-proof food lockers are provided. These are mandatory for storing all food, garbage, and scented items to ensure bear safety in this remote area.
Sanitation: One outdoor vault toilet (privy) is available on-site, providing a necessary, dedicated facility for human waste disposal.
The C. Vic Linsten Campsite offers several key highlights that make it a uniquely appealing choice for local Minnesotans planning their Northwoods getaway.
The most notable features, praised by past visitors, include:
Superior Privacy and Tranquility: Located within a quiet bay on Kabetogama Lake, the campsite is highly private. As noted in customer reviews, the bay often sees minimal boat traffic, ensuring a peaceful, secluded experience that truly feels like a retreat from the modern world.
Exceptional Dark Sky Viewing: A major highlight is the large rock outcropping located back in the woods, easily accessible from the site. This elevated position provides a spectacular, unobstructed platform for viewing the night sky. Voyageurs National Park is a certified International Dark Sky Park, and this feature at K5 offers one of the best possible opportunities to enjoy incredible stargazing, including clear views of the Milky Way and, potentially, the Northern Lights.
Spacious Group Accommodation: As a Large Campsite, K5 is designed for comfortably hosting a bigger group. With four dedicated tent pads and two picnic tables, it easily handles groups of 10 to 18 people, providing enough dedicated space for multiple families to camp together without feeling crowded.
Sand Landing Access: The welcoming sand landing at the water's edge simplifies both boat access and swimming. It allows for safe loading and unloading of gear and offers a soft entry point for a refreshing dip in the clear, cool waters of Lake Kabetogama.
Access to Lake Kabetogama Fishing: The campsite's location on 'Kab,' a lake famed for world-class walleye fishing, means anglers can spend less time traveling and more time fishing. The tranquil bay itself can be an excellent spot to drop a line right from the shore or a small boat.
All reservations and official inquiries for C. Vic Linsten Campsite (K5) are managed through the National Park Service's designated reservation system. An advance permit is strictly required for all overnight stays.

The site’s defining feature, the private rock outcropping for dark-sky viewing, elevates a simple camping trip into an unforgettable celestial experience, reinforcing Minnesota's reputation for having some of the most awe-inspiring natural environments.
By requiring boat access, K5 delivers the true Minnesota wilderness feeling—a deep sense of escape and solitude that is both manageable and immersive. This campsite isn't just a place to sleep; it’s a destination that supports the local lifestyle of fishing, boating, and shared outdoor adventure, all while enjoying the privacy and spaciousness needed to create lasting memories with the people who matter most. It represents the best of what a National Park has to offer a state known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
Just spent 4 nights here. Two families, 11 people, plenty of space. Bugs were not bad because there was always a breeze. The bay that the site was in is very quiet with only one boat coming into is all week. Star gazing from rock outcropping back in the woods was amazing.

Sep 11, 2023 · Jeremy SlickBeautiful campsite, good fishing right in the protected bay, nice little swimming beach. Blue berries close by when in season.
Jul 13, 2018 · Phillip RhodesNice campsite. Need a little bigger boat than canoe to get across because of the waves.
