Introduction / Overview
For Connecticut residents seeking the perfect mix of outdoor relaxation and exhilarating family entertainment, the Lake Compounce Campground offers a truly unique and convenient stay. This is not your typical secluded, deep-woods experience; rather, it’s a lively, family-focused destination strategically located just steps away from Lake Compounce Family Theme & Water Park, America's longest continuously operating amusement park. It serves as the ultimate basecamp for local families and visitors looking to maximize their fun without the stress of daily commuting.
The campground caters to a variety of overnight preferences, featuring everything from dedicated RV spaces and spacious tent sites to comfortable, fully furnished cabins and unique glamping-style Cub Huts and Tipis. This variety ensures that whether you're a seasoned RVer with season passes or a first-time family looking for a weekend escape, there’s a spot perfectly suited to your needs. RV enthusiasts particularly appreciate the ease and cleanliness of the RV section, noting the well-kept grounds and friendly staff, making it ideal for short weekend trips with grandchildren.
It is important to manage expectations regarding the atmosphere. As a highly convenient, high-volume campground connected to a major amusement park, the feel is more open and communal—some might describe it as an "open-air parking lot" for sites, rather than a secluded, heavily wooded forest. While tent sites, in particular, may feel close together, the true value for many Connecticut locals lies in the unparalleled proximity to the thrills of Boulder Dash, Crocodile Cove, and the rest of the park. Guests often highlight the presence of friendly staff and consistent security, contributing to a safe and enjoyable environment for families.
The campground operates seasonally, typically from May through early November, aligning perfectly with the park’s operational calendar, including fun seasonal events like Phantom Fall Fest and Holiday Lights. It is the go-to spot for those who want to "Play by day, Camp by night."
Location and Accessibility
The Lake Compounce Campground is exceptionally well-located for Connecticut residents, situated at 185 Enterprise Dr. While the physical address is listed in Southington, the campground is strategically positioned right on the border of Southington and Bristol, two miles from Exit 31 off Interstate 84. This Central Connecticut location makes it easily accessible from all corners of the state and from neighboring New England states.
Its primary advantage is its adjacency to the Lake Compounce Family Theme & Water Park. Campers are often within walking distance—about a three-quarter-mile walk—of the park entrance, and personal vehicles can be driven to the main Lake Compounce parking lot without additional charge. This access is a major draw for families who plan to spend multiple days at the rides and attractions.
Beyond the park itself, the location offers convenient access to local Connecticut amenities. Numerous restaurants, grocery stores, and essential services are just a short drive away in both the Bristol and Southington areas. Furthermore, for those who wish to explore the natural side of Connecticut, the campground is well-placed for day trips to nearby natural attractions and state parks, such as Black Rock State Park, River Highlands State Park, and Mattatuck State Forest, offering a blend of excitement and natural escape.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
The Lake Compounce Campground is an ideal and suitable destination for Connecticut locals for several compelling reasons, primarily centered on value, convenience, and family entertainment. For families with Lake Compounce Season Passes, the campground transforms a simple day trip into an affordable, action-packed weekend getaway. The ability to roll out of bed and walk a short distance to the amusement park saves time, money on daily parking, and the hassle of morning traffic, maximizing precious vacation time.
While some reviews highlight areas for improvement, particularly concerning the density of tent sites and the need for more bathroom facilities during peak holiday weekends, the overwhelming consensus from local users, especially RV travelers, is positive. They appreciate the friendly staff, the presence of security, and the well-kept nature of the RV sections. The variety of accommodation options, from cabins that feel like home to simple tent spots, ensures the experience can fit different budgets and comfort levels.
In essence, the Lake Compounce Campground offers Connecticut residents a budget-friendly and convenient way to experience one of New England’s oldest and most popular family attractions. It delivers more than just a place to sleep—it provides an extended-stay experience where the fun doesn't stop when the rides close. Nothing very special about this campground. No interesting natural features, it’s sort of like a natural parking lot. The tent sites are close together, and quiet hours are not enforced. The staff is very friendly. There are entirely too many tent sites for the amount of bathroom amenities available. We went on a holiday weekend and there was no toilet paper left by Friday afternoon. There are 44 tent sites, which allow a max of 6 people (264), and nobody is counting the amount of people. There are 5 toilets per gender and two showers.. my suggestion would be to have less tent sites, further apart and more water accessibility.
Jul 08, 2025 · Hibiki GanahaWe love the RV park. We bring our grandchildren on short weekend trips. Coupled with our season passes makes for a great weekend. Campground is clean and well kept, staff is friendly and security is present all the time. Only negative is trash cans no longer on end of isles.
Jul 06, 2025 · Jennifer McLeodMy son and I have been coming here for years. He was 5 when we started "glamping" in their cub huts, and now he's 12 and still wants to go. The staff couldn't be better, the cub huts are ideal for those who appreciate mod-cons like tv, climate control and a mini-fridge, but since you need to use the campground bathrooms (which are very well maintained), you're 'roughing it" just a bit. Their store is open 24 hours, and you get preferred parking at the amusement park, which is a definite perk. (Go to the right most lane and you'll be directed to the preferred lot.) We also bought our tickets from the campground, and doing so, definitely saved a lot of time and money. We bought tickets for $35 each and the next day was free (!) When you get to the amusement park, you'll walk by the long lines waiting to buy tickets and walk ahead to scan your paper teasy. At the turnstiles. Easy peasy. The grounds have a playground, a gaga pit, a volleyball court, basketball hoop and corn hole. The store has groceries, souvenirs, and chess and checkers to play. I'll keep going as long as my kid wants to.
Jun 22, 2025 · Christi DWe had a great family memory here!! We would return! Fireworks can be seen at campground however it is way better at the park. You can also view them in the parking lot! All staff were friendly we connected with and you also get VIP parking to the park. It was great to leave and come back to lake as you wished. If you are a season pass holder, you get a discount so I felt the price was great! They allow you to have dogs which I love!! I believe this is for certain sites. We did the RV. Passing by the cabins, I do like the step up they have here. Only thing I would recommend is cleanliness of the bathrooms and showers. We were there for 5 days. I am unsure if the bathrooms were ever cleaned.

It has been amazing! There are beautiful views of the stars at night and the sky in the morning also!
