Introduction / Overview
Nestled within 240 acres of beautiful, unspoiled woodland in Perry County, Lake Heron Retreat in Liverpool, PA, is a true hidden gem for Central Pennsylvania campers seeking peace, seclusion, and a connection with nature. This destination centers its appeal on its private 10-acre lake, which serves as the focal point for numerous relaxing and family-friendly activities. It is a place where the pace slows down, allowing guests to fully unwind and disconnect from the daily grind.
The retreat offers a spectrum of camping experiences, from comfortably outfitted RV sites with full hookups to more rustic, primitive tent sites, catering to all types of outdoor enthusiasts. Feedback from local guests highlights the peaceful and quiet atmosphere as a major draw, with one repeat visitor noting they "enjoy the peace and quiet this campground provides" and that their grandsons "can’t wait to come back." This is clearly a testament to its family-friendly environment and the commitment of the camp hosts who, in one account, "promptly came by to welcome us and offer their assistance if needed."
While the natural, rugged feel is part of its character—described by one guest as having a "rugged feel" due to the rip-rap stones and having a "logging camp" aesthetic—this sense of being truly away from civilization is precisely what makes it a retreat. The beautiful lake is universally praised, confirming its value as a genuine lakeside escape in the heart of Pennsylvania. Lake Heron Retreat is dedicated to providing a serene setting where families can make lasting memories, whether through fishing, hiking, or simply enjoying a campfire under the vast PA sky.
Location and Accessibility
Lake Heron Retreat is conveniently located at 171 Barners Rd, Liverpool, PA 17045, USA. This address places it just a short distance off US Routes 11 and 15, approximately 30 miles north of Harrisburg, making it an easy drive for residents across the Midstate and surrounding regions. The location strikes a perfect balance: it is highly accessible via major Pennsylvania roadways, yet its wooded setting offers the sought-after feeling of seclusion.
The retreat is situated in Perry County, known for its scenic river valleys, rolling hills, and abundant state game lands, positioning it ideally for outdoor exploration beyond the campground itself. While the immediate area focuses on the retreat’s 240 acres of woodland and the private lake, the short drive to Liverpool allows for easy access to basic supplies and local amenities. Guests should be prepared for the final approach to the campground to involve narrower, secluded roads, which ultimately contribute to the sense of a genuine escape and the 'retreat' experience. The central location makes it an excellent base camp for exploring the larger Susquehanna Valley region's historic sites and natural beauty.

This was or second stay. This time we brought our two grandsons and they can’t wait to come back. We enjoy the peace and quiet this campground provides. The camp site hosts promptly came by to welcome us and offer their assistance if needed. My only request is to replace the picnic table on site 20. Thanks for a great 4 days!
Aug 12, 2025 · Randy BloseNot much more than a logging camp. Large rip-rap stones along the campground gave it a rugged feel. Full hook up was nice. Lake was beautiful. There was a pavilion that was taken over by people and their dogs. Looked like they lived there.
Aug 18, 2025 · Bill BarsczI can't say enough good things about this campsite. It is primitive so if that isn't your cup of tea you might not like it here. Sites 1-6 were recently added and are pull-through sites. They are very large and long and pretty level. The original sites are all back in. The hookups worked as expected, and we had no trouble at all with any of the services. The camp host and her husband were amazing! She frequently checked in with us to make sure we were enjoying our stay, and having a good time. If you like to take nature walks or shorter hikes this place is a must to check out. We hiked a different trail the week we stayed, and often commented on how well maintained they were. The lake was beautiful, and we enjoyed the Blackfoot trail that takes you around the entire lake. We will definitely be adding this site to our next camping season! We camped at Lake Heron Retreat in a Travel Trailer.
May 28, 2025 · Jessica PhillipsA time to get away from all the hustle and bustle of life to enjoy the wonderful outdoors. Leave your cellphone on airplane mode and just enjoy nature. RV park, Cabins and camping sites available to rent all year round. Plenty of well groomed hiking trails, some are littered with edible berry bushes. There is also a crystal clear lake to swim, peddle boat, kayak or canoe in. All available to rent on premise. Not to far from a handful of small towns for camping nessities. Go to relax or invite family and friends to get together and celebrate. I personally will be going to visit at least once a year. Happy Camping 🏕️
Jul 10, 2025 · Jonathan Van TilburgBeautiful, simple, quiet spot to camp with our RV on the way to visit our grandchildren! The trails are spectacular! We will be back!
