Are you a Maryland adventurer seeking a truly immersive outdoor experience, where the gentle flow of the Potomac River and the historic charm of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath set the scene for your next getaway? Look no further than Leopards Mill Campsite, a hidden gem nestled along this iconic Maryland trail in Hancock, MD. Known for its serene atmosphere and direct access to both the towpath and the river, this campsite offers a peaceful retreat for cyclists, hikers, and paddlers alike. It's a place where the sounds of nature, rather than city noise, define your stay, promising a truly tranquil escape.
Leopards Mill Campsite is part of the extensive network of free hiker-biker campsites managed by the National Park Service along the C&O Canal Towpath. These sites are designed to provide basic amenities for those traversing the 184.5-mile historic pathway, offering a convenient and rustic overnight stop. What makes Leopards Mill particularly appealing, as noted by visitors, is its "very nice spot along the river." This direct access to the Potomac adds another layer to the camping experience, allowing for both waterside relaxation and opportunities for paddling adventures.
For those who value simplicity and a deep connection with nature, Leopards Mill offers precisely that. It’s not a commercial campground with extensive facilities, but rather a prime example of primitive camping done right, with essential amenities provided to ensure a comfortable stay. The feeling of a "very peaceful time" experienced by campers is a testament to the site's ability to provide a genuine escape from the daily grind. Whether you arrive by bike after a day on the towpath or by canoe after navigating the Potomac, you'll find a welcoming spot to rest and rejuvenate amidst Maryland's beautiful natural landscape.
While access from the river might require a bit of keen observation due to foliage, as one canoeist pointed out, the clear marking from the bike trail ensures that those on two wheels will easily find their way. This dual accessibility caters to different types of outdoor enthusiasts, highlighting the campsite's versatility and its integration into the wider recreational network of the region.
Location and Accessibility
Leopards Mill Campsite is uniquely located along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath in Hancock, MD 21750, USA. This places it directly on one of Maryland's most celebrated linear parks, the C&O Canal National Historical Park, which stretches from Georgetown in Washington D.C. to Cumberland, MD. The exact coordinates place it at Mile Marker 105.7 on the Towpath, making it easily identifiable for those using navigation apps or guidebooks.
For cyclists and hikers traversing the C&O Canal Towpath, accessibility is straightforward. The campsite is explicitly designed as a "hiker-biker" site, meaning it is directly adjacent to the towpath, with clear signage indicating its presence from the trail. This ensures that those traveling by non-motorized means will find it without difficulty. The town of Hancock itself is relatively close, offering services like grocery stores, restaurants, and bike shops for resupply, typically just a short ride or walk from the towpath.
For those approaching by water, specifically canoeing or kayaking the Potomac River, access to Leopards Mill Campsite can be a bit more challenging. As noted in a review, there is "no sign on the side of the river," and visibility might be obscured by "full foliage" in the summer months. However, the reviewer also mentioned that from the river, one can spot the "porta-john, bbq grill and the backside of the Leopards Mill post," and even praised an individual who left a "rope tied to the log in order to climb the river bank." This indicates that while not explicitly marked from the river, access is possible for determined paddlers, though perhaps requiring some scouting. The proximity to the river means it’s a popular stop for those enjoying multi-day paddling trips along the Potomac. Vehicular access to these hiker-biker sites is generally not provided directly to the campsite itself to maintain their primitive nature, but nearby parking may exist at access points to the towpath.

Jun 05, 2018 · Matt Stevenson (Acrossthemapwithmatt.com)I canoe the Potomac River. There's no sign on the side of the river that your on Leopards Mill Campsite. However if your on the bike trail it's well mark. Looking from the river at the bank, you can see porta-john, bbq grill and the backside of the Leopards Mill post. Kudos to the individual who left the rope tied to the log in order to climb the river bank of the campsite. I canoe in late October and alot of the leaves are gone. But if your planning to it in the middle of summer, it may not be as visible because of full foliage. Not alot of land mark. Best wishes on your Potomac River Paddle adventure.
