A campground, at its essence, is a gateway to the great outdoors, allowing individuals and families to connect with natural surroundings. Little Bear Island Campground embraces this philosophy by offering a blend of natural beauty and essential conveniences. It caters to a range of campers, from those with large RVs seeking full hookups to individuals simply looking for a quiet place to pitch a tent and enjoy the sounds of the river. The allure of camping by the water's edge, with the convenience of nearby towns for forgotten essentials, makes this a compelling choice for many Kentucky residents.
What sets Little Bear Island Campground apart is its distinctive island setting and the direct access it provides to the waterfront. This creates a special atmosphere, offering opportunities for fishing, enjoying river views, or simply relaxing by your campsite. While some larger rigs might need to be mindful of ground conditions after heavy rains, the overall consensus from campers points to a welcoming environment with friendly hosts who genuinely care about your experience.
This article will provide a detailed overview of Little Bear Island Campground, covering its precise location, the services and amenities it offers, any special promotions, and essential contact information. Ultimately, we'll highlight why this charming riverside campground is an ideal spot for locals in Kentucky to enjoy their next outdoor adventure, providing a blend of natural beauty and practical convenience.
Little Bear Island Campground is uniquely situated at 789 KY-3307, Greenup, KY 41144, USA. This address places it directly on an island, offering a distinctive and tranquil riverside setting in Greenup, Kentucky. Greenup County, located in the northeastern part of the Commonwealth, is known for its scenic rivers, rolling hills, and a blend of small-town charm with accessible larger communities nearby.
The campground's location on KY-3307 provides relatively straightforward access. While it offers a sense of being "away from it all," the convenience of nearby towns is a significant advantage. Russell and Ashland, both larger cities with a broader range of amenities and services, are not far. This means that if campers forget any essentials – from groceries to camping supplies – they are just a short drive away from well-stocked stores, restaurants, and other necessities.
Accessing the island itself may involve navigating a road that can be affected by weather conditions. As some reviews indicate, the land, particularly closer to the river, can get wet and hold water after heavy rains. This means that while standard vehicles should be fine, campers with very large or heavy RVs, such as 43-foot diesel pushers, might need to exercise extra caution or consider the weather conditions prior to arrival. The management is reportedly aware of these conditions for large rigs, and communication with them beforehand can help ensure a smooth arrival.
Despite the potential for wet ground in certain areas, the overall location is highly praised for its beauty and the peaceful atmosphere it affords. The direct access to the water and the secluded feel of an island campground contribute significantly to its appeal as a serene outdoor escape.
Little Bear Island Campground offers a range of services designed to provide a comfortable and convenient camping experience. These include:
- Full Hookup Sites: The campground provides sites equipped with both water and 50-amp electrical connections. Many sites also offer sewage hookups, allowing RV campers to enjoy full utility access during their stay.
- Dump Station: A conveniently located dump station is available for campers to dispose of their RV waste, ensuring ease of use upon departure.
- Water Access: Potable water connections are available at sites, providing a reliable source for drinking and other camping needs.
- Pet-Friendly: The campground appears to be welcoming to pets, allowing campers to bring their furry companions along for the adventure. It's always advisable to adhere to standard pet etiquette, including leash laws and cleaning up after your pets.
- Friendly Hosts: A recurring theme in reviews is the presence of "great hosts" who are welcoming and willing to assist campers, contributing to a positive and supportive atmosphere.
- Proximity to Amenities: While the campground itself focuses on natural appeal, its location ensures that vital services like grocery stores, gas stations, and restaurants in nearby Russell and Ashland are easily accessible for resupply or dining out.
Little Bear Island Campground boasts several features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for campers in Kentucky:
- Riverside Setting: The primary highlight is its unique location directly on an island, offering picturesque riverside views and direct access to the water. This creates a tranquil and scenic environment, perfect for relaxation and enjoying nature.
- Spacious and Beautiful Sites: Campers frequently praise the beauty of the individual sites, many of which are described as spacious. This allows for comfortable setup of RVs or tents, with ample room for outdoor activities around your campsite.
- Friendly and Welcoming Hosts: The campground is consistently noted for its "great hosts" who create a welcoming and helpful atmosphere. This personal touch significantly enhances the camping experience, making visitors feel at home and well-cared for.
- Convenient Utility Access: The provision of water and 50-amp electrical connections, along with readily available dump stations, ensures a high level of convenience for RV campers, simplifying their stay.
- Ideal for Relaxation: Many visitors express a desire to spend a "lazy weekend" just camping and hanging out, indicating the campground's suitability for those seeking a peaceful, low-key retreat rather than a fast-paced activity hub.
- Accessibility to Local Towns: Despite its secluded feel, the campground's proximity to larger towns like Russell and Ashland is a major advantage. This means campers have quick access to forgotten supplies, dining options, or emergency services, blending convenience with natural immersion.
- Potential for River Activities: While not explicitly detailed in reviews, a riverside location naturally implies opportunities for activities such as fishing (where permitted), kayaking, or simply observing wildlife along the water's edge.
- Nature Immersion (with a caveat): The natural setting allows for immersion in the outdoors. However, it's a place where you need to be "mindful" of ground conditions, especially after rain, indicating a more authentic, less manicured natural environment.
As a smaller, possibly privately-owned campground, Little Bear Island Campground may not widely publicize specific, time-limited promotions or special offers in the same way larger state parks or commercial chains might. Information on such offers is typically best obtained through direct communication with the campground management.
However, the value proposition of Little Bear Island Campground itself serves as its own ongoing "promotion":
- Affordable Riverside Camping: The core offer is the opportunity for a serene, riverside camping experience with essential hookups at a potentially competitive price point. Smaller campgrounds often offer a more budget-friendly alternative to larger resorts.
- Personalized Service: The consistent praise for "great hosts" implies a high level of personalized customer service, which can be a significant draw and a strong incentive for repeat visits. This level of attentiveness can be seen as a promotional feature in itself.

Customer Reviews
I had a wonderful time here. Hosts are great. I'd love to spend a lazy weekend here just camping and hanging out. Unfortunately this time around it was just a place to sleep. The location is perfect. If you forgot anything Russell and Ashland are not far. Our site was beautiful. We had water abs a 50amp connection. Dump site convenient on our way out. The land can get wet and hold water, especially the closer spots to the river, so be mindful. It was raining hard the days prior to arrival, but stopped the day we set camp. By the next day I rode my MC out of the grounds. There were still some slick spots but if you are mindful is fine. We will definitely be back. And our offer to help out around the grounds still stands!
We got to the campground and nobody was around. I started backing into the site, 2nd site as you get onto the island, and I got stuck. I have a 43' Deisel Pusher with 2 rear axels. A little over 46,000 lbs. I called the manager and he said he was 20 min. Away. He got there about an hour later but did give me a # for a tow company. I called them and they were about 30 min. Away. When the driver showed up he said they should have told me about big rigs getting stuck there. A coach was pulled out the day before and a few others the week before. The manager did refund my money as I told him I would not be staying there. It took a few hours to get pulled out and it was expensive. FMCA would not cover it. We visited Little Bear Island Campground, no overnight stay.
This isn't a campground, it's a field behind someone's house. When we showed up, it was wet and muddy. I incorrectly assumed the manager knew the land that he was looking after. I followed his driving instructions and got my Class A diesel pusher stuck in the wet clay. Fortunately, they had an old tractor and pulled me out after about an hour. We covered our motorhome and tow vehicle with mud and left. If you have a small trailer and there has been a prolonged drought, this would be OK, otherwise, AVOID THIS PLACE!
After a long search for a campground for my husband working in the area, Danny was very accommodating and made the reservation process painless. He went above and beyond what any campground manager has done. We would highly recommend this campground for anyone in the area and hope to stay again very soon.
I went to check it out a year ago. It was muddy on a dry day. Could get stuck easy, it's beside a home and no gravel, just grass to park on so I left.
