Lobster Buoy Campsites is a treasured “hidden gem” nestled on the pristine shores of the Mid-Coast region, offering a classic, authentically rustic Maine camping experience. Located in South Thomaston, this small, private campground has been serving generations of families since its founding in 1969. It embraces an "old-school" philosophy, purposefully avoiding the high-end commercial feel of larger resorts in favor of simplicity, quiet, and unspoiled natural beauty.
The site spans over 400 feet of Atlantic seashore, providing campers with direct access to a beautiful, clean, and peaceful beach. This unique feature means every single campsite—be it for a tent or an RV—is conveniently located no more than 150 yards from the water. As many repeat visitors attest, this proximity to the ocean allows for breathtaking daily views, from spectacular sunrises and sunsets over Penobscot Bay to rare sights like the "blood moon" and frequent rainbows.
Lobster Buoy Campsites is the ideal destination for Mainers who value a quiet, family-oriented atmosphere where the natural surroundings provide all the necessary entertainment. While the facilities are described as being "a tad outdated" and 'rustic,' they are consistently reported as clean, stocked, and perfectly functional. This emphasis on location and genuine connection to the Maine coast, rather than modern luxury, is precisely what has cultivated a loyal community of campers who return year after year. The campground operates seasonally, typically from mid-May through mid-October, capturing the prime months for coastal Maine recreation.
Lobster Buoy Campsites is located at 280 Waterman Beach Rd, South Thomaston, ME 04858, USA. This address places it strategically in the heart of Maine’s Mid-Coast region, a highly desirable destination known for its rugged shoreline, picturesque harbor towns, and rich maritime history.
The campground sits about seven miles south of the city of Rockland, making it incredibly convenient for accessing local amenities, restaurants, and cultural attractions like the Farnsworth Art Museum. The location is easily found just off Route 73. Its relative seclusion on Waterman Beach Road allows the campground to maintain its quiet, peaceful atmosphere despite its proximity to major Mid-Coast hubs.
Nearby attractions, often recommended by the campground's friendly staff, are numerous and diverse. The world-renowned Owls Head Transportation Museum is just a short drive up the road. The exquisite harbors of Camden and Rockport are also within a comfortable driving distance, offering opportunities for sailing, sightseeing, and dining. Furthermore, the campsite provides direct, easy access for launching kayaks and small boats onto Penobscot Bay, allowing Mainers to explore the Muscle Ridge Islands and watch the classic schooners and working lobster boats right from the water's edge. This superb location blends the tranquility of a private coastal retreat with the convenience of being near the vibrant cultural life of the Mid-Coast.

This place was so cute. We got a tent campsite not far from the beach and had a blast! The beach itself is clean and peaceful. The restrooms and showers are also clean and lit and stocked with toiletries. The front desk person was very friendly and explained all the house rules and maps perfectly. Theres a place to get fire not far from the camp and its on an honors system so you judt pick up the wood and leave money in a box. I really enjoyed my time!
Aug 10, 2025 · Alisa GorelickA little hidden gem on the mid coast of Maine. If you’re looking for high end glamping, this isn’t for you. It’s a rustic and beautiful old school place. The campground is very small and quiet, set on a beautiful beach. The tent sites are very small, but have the best view in the campground. It’s a great place to kayak. We’ve seen the blood moon over the water two nights in a row, beautiful sun rises and sunsets, and even several rainbows. The bath house is a tad outdated but worked perfectly for my needs and I have no complaints. I was able to make a very last minute spontaneous solo reservation, due to a cancellation by someone else. Jennie answered my email inquiring about booking, and promptly answered a few questions I had. Immediately upon arriving, I was greeted by wonderful and kind repeat campers who ended up becoming friends. The folks camping here have been coming for many years and have made it a special yearly trip. It feels remote but also very safe. There is also lots to do in nearby areas as well. I can’t wait to return, but next time with my camper.
Aug 03, 2023 · DianaLee HirtWanted to book and travel quite a bit to have this location but with a rule of not being allowed to use built in air conditioning in our RV is absolutely too old school. An outlook of old school is hindering because new RV air conditioners run quietly. Just Make your campground an “only tents”campground because asking us to not use air conditioning is wrong as RV rigs do not circulate well without air running… I believe the campground management is not being honest, it’s about “using” their electricity. Just up your price. Please don’t say you’re going to not allow dogs like other campgrounds that I’d just a threat before even exploring your campground. Just say violent and aggressive breeds frowned upon. Advertise socialized loving dogs only allowed can come and stay. Sad day for me. I won’t be booking. To ask to send in a non refundable deposit is rude from the start as well. Just set up a cut off date for us to get a full refund by as plans can change. I have two fluffy adorable small labradoodles lol They ask 1 dog per site which is cool but I have two adorable lovable friendly socialized doggies. We are neat freaks about cleaning up their #2’s.
Jun 10, 2025 · Eleanor LitwinetzThis campsite is small, inexpensive, and has wonderful views and location. We managed to get a reservation last minute and the front desk lady was super nice and helpful. This campsite has everything you need, clean toilets, running water for washing, and gorgeous views of nature and the beach. We camped right on the beach and had a wonderful time. They weren’t selling firewood so we did have to drive a little bit to find someone that was selling. Also, if you are staying here, you have to try McLoons Lobster shack, it’s right down the road and it’s fantastic!
Jul 10, 2021 · Megan ShoemakerWhat a great hidden gem! The owners are very nice and knowledgeable about where to get supplies. Found this place by sheer luck, can't complain about anything here. The view from the tent site was amazing. Where else can you get beach front access at a reasonable price. Recommend too all.
