Introduction / Overview
For many residents of Pennsylvania, the call of the great outdoors is best answered by the state's renowned park system. Nestled on the side of Locust Mountain in Schuylkill County, Locust Lake State Park Campground is a true gem, providing a perfect escape into the serene beauty of the region. As a cherished component of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) network, this park is known for its picturesque 52-acre lake, which is the centerpiece of a 1,772-acre wooded landscape. The campground itself is extremely popular, offering a blend of secluded nature and essential modern conveniences. It is an ideal destination for local families, couples, and solo adventurers from Philadelphia, Harrisburg, or Scranton looking for a weekend getaway or an extended vacation rooted in classic Pennsylvania outdoor traditions. The park operates as a four-season destination, though its primary camping season runs from spring through the end of fall.
The campground’s design is unique, with sites encircling the lake, divided into distinct areas: a tent-only section on the north side and a larger area on the south side accommodating both tents and RVs/trailers. This careful division aims to cater to different camping preferences. The atmosphere is generally tranquil, providing the ideal backdrop for a true "get away" experience, despite the current and ongoing efforts by the state to upgrade some facilities. The park's commitment to providing a clean, well-kept environment, which is often highlighted in visitor feedback, is a strong draw for Pennsylvania locals who value well-maintained public resources. Whether you're seeking a quiet spot to fish or a basecamp for exploring the scenic Schuylkill County, Locust Lake State Park Campground holds a firm place as a top-tier regional destination.

Getting worse, not impressed. Last couple years they are closing half the campground so you have people crowding, right next to you when you’re trying to “get away” it’s just not the best place for that at all. Kinda makes me sad bc when I was here 10 years ago it was much nicer. Camp store has never been open since I started coming.
Aug 31, 2025 · E MAbsolutely gorgeous park! We had a great night. Seems like a wonderful place to spend the hot summer days. Awesome bathrooms and showers! Very clean park. VERY picturesque We had a really bad storm last night and this pretty good sized branch fell about 10’ from our tent. That was a bit scary we could have been hurt or killed. The trails could use some maintenance. They’re great but easy to lose your way. This could have been because of the bad storm though. Will definitely be staying again in the future.
Sep 16, 2021 · Scott BrewsterBeautiful park, but the swimming area is horrible. I've been coming her multiple times a year for the past 14 years and never had any significant trouble. This year, however, the beach is overrun by geese and is covered in incredible amounts of geese poop. Was not fun at all, in fact very disgusting.
Jun 13, 2024 · Em EisyerWow, what a gem. Plenty of campsites, but there are so many trees, all you see is nature from the water. My absolute favorite kayaking spot. Campsites are clean, spacious and feel secluded. Added bonus, they sell Guers Tea in the camp store, so you can get a full Skook experience.
Aug 08, 2023 · BillGreat park and campground but unfortunate circumstances. There was a crazy couple living in the campsite when we went last year that were definitely not the kind of people you want to keep valuables or really anything you care about near. The lake is beautiful and so are the trails that surround it. It gets very wet and swampy early in the spring due to seasonal rivers and can be fun but also very wet on the trails and by the playground.
