Operated by Falcon Expeditions, this campground is far from a typical roadside stop; it’s an impeccably designed oasis that caters to adventurers and relaxation-seekers alike, earning rave reviews from those who have discovered its charm.
Mount Sterling Base Camp has redefined the notion of "camping" by providing an environment that feels deeply secluded yet offers a remarkable array of amenities. Guests consistently praise its thoughtful setup, which allows for both intimate getaways and beautiful gatherings. From the inviting hot showers to the fully equipped kitchen and communal fire ring, every detail has been considered to enhance the outdoor experience. This dedication to guest comfort, combined with its stunning natural surroundings, makes it a compelling choice for North Carolinians yearning for an authentic, yet comfortable, mountain escape.
As one satisfied camper eloquently put it, after venturing through renowned global landscapes, Mount Sterling Base Camp deserved a "top spot among all these places on the list of 'Most Beautiful Places in the World to Travel to.'" This sentiment underscores the exceptional beauty and unique appeal of this local gem, promising an adventure that feels both grand and intimately personal.
Mount Sterling Base Camp is truly defined by its remarkable location at 780 Flt Br Rd, Waynesville, NC 28785, USA. What makes this address particularly special is its strategic positioning: it is nestled squarely between thousands of acres of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on one side and thousands of acres of the Pisgah National Forest on the other. This unique geographical placement provides an unparalleled level of solitude and immersion in nature that is, as one reviewer noted, "nearly impossible to find anywhere else on the Eastern Seaboard."
Despite its seemingly remote feel, the base camp benefits from excellent accessibility. It's described as being "only a few minutes to town," referring to Waynesville, a charming mountain community known for its arts, culture, and local eateries. This proximity to essential services and local attractions is a significant advantage, particularly for families with young children or those who appreciate the convenience of a nearby town after a day of wilderness exploration.
The property is located off Forest Service Road 288, which, while described as a "rough and narrow road with a creek crossing" by one guest, is reportedly "packed well" and manageable for RV trailers and 4x4 pickups. This adventurous approach adds to the sense of discovery without being overly challenging. Furthermore, the ability to have "both cell service and amazing star gazing at the same time" is a rare and highly valued perk of this unique location. Within a mere four miles, adventurers can access an entrance to the Appalachian Trail, opportunities for rafting along the Pigeon River, the Smoky Mountain 1000 trail, horseback riding, 4x4 trails, and numerous hiking trails, making it an ideal "base camp" for a myriad of outdoor pursuits. Scenic drives to Cataloochee Valley, NC, and Cosby, TN (via gravel roads), are also easily within reach, broadening the scope of exploration.
Mount Sterling Base Camp distinguishes itself by offering a "full-service" camping experience that goes far beyond a typical campsite. The owners, Elizabeth and Matt (of Falcon Expeditions), have thoughtfully equipped the property with impressive infrastructure and amenities that elevate the stay.

Customer Reviews
We have gotten the wonderful opportunity to camp with Elizabeth and Matt now numerous times and it was some of our BEST in the books. Their camp is set up perfectly to have a beautiful gathering or an intimate setting. From the hot showers to the kitchen and fire ring I love this camp! It will make you want to find your own oasis in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. But why when this one is already here. When they cook for you, you will want more and more. I can say that honestly because every morning I have woken up wanting more wishing I had made a take home plate or they had it for breakfast the next day!
Over the past 6 months, my wife and 2 year old son have been blessed with the opportunity to adventure through Europe and South America. From enchanted castles in Spain, to the vast beauty of Patagonia, we have borne witness to some of the world's most beautiful places. Without a doubt, this place deserves a top spot among all these places on the list of "Most Beautiful Places in the World to Travel to". It is a stunning place! LOCATION LOCATION! While this property is only few minutes to town (a huge plus when adventuring with a little one), the fact that it is nestled squarely between thousands of acres of National Park on one side, and thousands of acres of National Forest on the other, provides a level of solitude that is nearly impossible to find anywhere else on the Eastern Seaboard. I can't think of another place where I can have both cell service and amazing star gazing at the same time! Full Service: If you're a fan of Hipcamp, you've likely come across numerous listings simply advertising a spot in a random backyard as a "camp site". This is the polar opposite of that. The owners of Falcon Expeditions not only thought of every detail, they have equipped the property with the infrastructure necessary to match those thoughts. The directions were clear and detailed, the common spaces/bathrooms were better than advertised and immaculately clean. In addition, the space is generously stocked with cooking utensils/supplies, and other items... Next time we'll pack much less! In conclusion...If you're looking to get away from the big crowds and need a scenic adventure that doesn't require an airplane ticket to Patagonia, this is your spot.. We can't wait to go back!
