Introduction / Overview
For New Yorkers dreaming of a truly wild, water-based escape, the islands of Lake George offer a camping experience that is unique in the Northeast. At the heart of one of the lake's most tranquil sections lies the Narrow Island Ranger Station. This station, managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), serves as the essential administrative and logistical headquarters for the Narrow Island Group—affectionately known to many as the "Mother Bunch" of islands—in the northern part of the lake.
Unlike traditional drive-up campgrounds, access to the Narrow Island Group campsites, which include popular spots like Nobles Island, is strictly by boat. The Ranger Station is the required first stop for all campers who have secured reservations within this group. It is where you check in, receive your official permit, and get crucial, up-to-date information on rules, conditions, and directions to your specific island campsite.
The operation here is defined by its dedication to maintaining the wilderness integrity of the islands. As one satisfied user noted, the ranger station is "maintained by dedicated staff who will get you pointed in the right direction to your camp site." This friendly, professional guidance is invaluable, transforming the initial logistics of boat-in camping from a potential complication into a seamless start to your Adirondack adventure.
The Narrow Island Group is renowned for offering the quietest and most private island camping experience on Lake George, making the Ranger Station the gateway to seclusion and natural beauty for local New York residents.
Location and Accessibility
The Narrow Island Ranger Station’s location is both scenic and logistically central to the group of islands it manages. While the provided address—11000000010060000000, Huletts Landing, NY 12841, USA—is a placeholder for a location accessible only by water, it clearly anchors the station to the Huletts Landing area on the lake’s eastern shore.
Crucial Boat-Only Access: It is imperative for all visitors to understand that the Ranger Station itself is only accessible by boat. Campers must arrange for transportation via their own powerboat, canoe, or kayak, or a local water taxi service. Many New York campers utilize the marinas and launching facilities near Huletts Landing to begin their journey.
The Narrow Island Group sits in the central-northern section of Lake George, and the Ranger Station is strategically positioned to oversee these 85 sites spread across various islands. This northern placement makes it an ideal destination for New York campers launching from northern Lake George locations like Hague or Ticonderoga, often bypassing the higher boat traffic of the southern basin. The journey to the station is short and scenic from the Huletts Landing area, but a dedicated dock or pier at the station is necessary for temporary parking during the check-in process. Customer feedback highlights that docking can be somewhat challenging for smaller craft like kayaks or canoes, suggesting visitors should be prepared for a slightly rugged approach typical of a wilderness administrative post.
Services Offered
The Narrow Island Ranger Station provides essential services that support the entire Narrow Island Group camping operation. While it does not offer full-service amenities like showers or laundry (those are available at larger DEC mainland facilities), its functions are vital for a safe and orderly island camping experience:

The ranger station is maintained by dedicated staff who will get you pointed in the right direction to your camp site. Only accessible by boat. I drop a star for not having easy docking for the Kayaker or canoeist. But we’re crazy people to be out in the middle of this lake on our Kayaks. : )
