For Connecticut residents searching for the ideal summer retreat that offers both a lively, structured atmosphere and a genuinely peaceful environment, Nelson’s Family Campground in East Hampton presents a unique proposition. Situated on a sprawling 175 scenic acres in the heart of central Connecticut, this destination has been a family-owned haven since 1964, consistently delivering on its promise of a memorable, community-focused camping experience.
The campground’s identity is built around family fun and a conscious effort to maintain a relaxed, non-motorized pace. This is best exemplified by their notable and beloved rule: the park does not allow golf carts. This single policy, highly praised by guests, ensures a quieter, more traditional outdoor experience where walking and biking are the primary modes of transport, fostering a strong sense of community and a refreshingly laid-back atmosphere.
While the vast majority of its nearly 400 sites are dedicated to seasonal campers—a common structure that creates a vibrant summer community—a selection of transient sites are available for weekenders and short-term guests. These sites are fully equipped to accommodate modern RVs, with various hookup options. The overall experience is consistently described by local visitors as welcoming and family-oriented, with a nearly endless calendar of planned events and activities that guarantee entertainment for all ages from spring through fall.
Nelson's provides a comfortable blend of rustic charm and modern convenience. It’s a place where you can spend your day enjoying water activities at the pool or fishing pond, and your evenings around a campfire, all while being a short drive from some of Connecticut’s most cherished local attractions.

We had a fantastic time at this campground and would highly recommend it, especially for families. The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and truly family-oriented. One of the highlights is the sheer number of activities available. There was constantly something going on for everyone, from young kids to adults, ensuring no one in our group was ever bored. It's important to know that the vast majority of the sites (about 99%) are seasonal, but we had no trouble booking one of the daily spots. A unique feature we absolutely loved is that despite its large size, the park doesn't allow golf carts. This made a huge difference, creating a wonderfully quiet and laid-back environment. It was so pleasant to see people walking and biking around, which really added to the relaxed, community feel. Overall, this was a great experience and an excellent choice for a fun-filled yet peaceful family getaway.
Jul 21, 2025 · AlrityYeah you would have gotten 5 stars but I stayed for a month and your black tank dumping service needs some improvement. You can’t just pull the handle and drain all the liquids and not back rinse you are asking for problems. My RV has a tank rinse that I totally set up for before my scheduled dump left your guy a note all he had to do is turn one knob to spay and help clear the tank. It was never done. Instead solids built up for 3 weeks 3 dumps later and yes we had a clog. Sean came out on an emergency dump because honestly it wouldn’t happened if it was done effectively the 3 times prior I was charged 40 dollars for something that should’ve never happened. I made sure I was present for this dump and thanks to Sean it went well. Again my stay there was excellent grandchildren had a great time. Family visited and had great time. But honestly, if I were to do it again, I would probably spend 250 bucks on my own tank and dump myself because that’s something that has to be done right.
Aug 03, 2025 · Jeff GodinThis is one of the nicest campgrounds we have been to. We have been to a lot! The facilities are clean, up to date and ample. The grounds are kept up. A lot of shade and nice people. Would definitely come here again.
Aug 04, 2025 · Diane PeckhamIt's our 2nd year as seasonal campers at Nelson's. It's perfect for our family - Close to home, family friendly, clean, & safe. Seasonal rates are affordable, and there are plenty of amenities for both kids and adults alike. Kind of a perfect type of campground, in the sense that it's not a party spot but also not a retirement community. Kind of straddles the line perfectly. Staff is super friendly too, and the staff (and neighbors) are always willing to lend a helping hand. Tight knit community type of thing. We love it at Nelson's.
May 19, 2025 · Matthew ManueleWe have been a seasonal at Nelson’s for 4 years now and it is always a great time! The staff is always there for you if you’re having an issue. Erin and Danielle are great and not forgetting about Shawn… also weekends with food trucks, bands, and DJs is always a great time!! I highly recommend Nelson’s campground!!
