Introduction / Overview: Your Primitive Riverside Retreat in Connecticut
For Connecticut residents with a passion for paddling and a taste for true primitive camping, the Hurd State Park River Camp offers an unparalleled local outdoor adventure. Nestled on the scenic banks of the Connecticut River, this dedicated campsite is a quintessential stop along the celebrated Connecticut River Paddler's Trail. It is a strictly boat-in/boat-out destination, deliberately preserved for those exploring New England’s longest and most magnificent waterway by kayak or canoe.
Hurd State Park itself, established in 1914, is one of the earliest jewels in the state park system. The park’s sprawling woodlands, dramatic ledges, and numerous trails create a beautiful, tranquil backdrop for the river camp. The camping area itself is simple, providing a rustic and authentic overnight experience that requires campers to be fully self-sufficient. It is not designed for car camping or long stays; instead, it is perfectly suited for a single, memorable night under the stars, allowing you to wake up to the fog rising off the majestic river.
This commitment to a primitive experience means that you must pack in and pack out all your supplies, including trash. Reviews from fellow Connecticut campers highlight the ample space for tents, the convenience of the on-site amenities, and the beautiful scenery. However, they also serve as a practical reminder: while firewood foraging is possible, it can be challenging, so bringing a camp saw or pre-purchased firewood is strongly advised to ensure a successful evening campfire.
Location and Accessibility: Canoe or Kayak is Your Key
The Hurd State Park River Camp is located within the greater park grounds in:
East Hampton, CT 06424, USA
The crucial detail for all prospective campers is the mode of transportation: access is by boat only. This campsite is exclusively reserved for individuals traveling on the Connecticut River by paddle craft (canoe or kayak). There is no vehicle access or overnight parking permitted for river campers at the site. This maintains the remote and special nature of the experience.
Local paddlers typically launch their craft at one of the designated access points upstream or downstream and paddle to the campsite, utilizing it as an essential stopover on a multi-day journey. While the main park features accessible parking and popular hiking and biking trails, the river camp remains deliberately separate, accessed only from the water. This adds an element of exclusivity and true wilderness feel to the experience for local users.
Services Offered at the River Camp
As a primitive, boat-in campsite, the facilities at the Hurd State Park River Camp are minimal, focused on supporting self-sufficient overnight stays for those traveling the river.
Features and Highlights for the Local Adventurer
The Hurd State Park River Camp offers much more than just a place to sleep—it provides a gateway to some of the best outdoor features in the Central Connecticut River Valley.

This is a crucial destination for locals who embrace the canoeing and kayaking lifestyle, providing a convenient and well-maintained stop right in the heart of the state.

This is a great camping spot. Easy access from the kayak and tons of room to put up multiple tents/shelters. Fire ring with cooking grill and picnic table on site with a privy a few hundred feet away. Foraging for firewood was a little challenging. We found a few green deadfalls and struggled at times to keep a fire going. Bring a camp saw! All in all, a beautiful spot to camp and will come back.
Aug 28, 2024 · Ralph SummaWhen I came here I did park at the pavilion and did see the sign for the campsite I did not take that trail down but I did take another trail which led me to the river with a nice view there are so many different trails here that you can walk or bicycle. I followed the all trails app and it led me in a loop which was very cool they have picnic benches and grills I noticed here as well my dog did love checking out the river.
