A Unique Connecticut Adventure: Gillette Castle State Park River Campground
For Connecticut residents seeking a truly unique and memorable overnight experience, the Gillette Castle State Park River Campground offers an opportunity unlike any other in the region. Nestled on the grounds of the magnificent and whimsical Gillette Castle, this primitive campsite provides a distinct chance to connect with the natural beauty of the Connecticut River. Designed for those who embrace paddle-powered exploration, it stands as one of the few designated river camping spots in the entire state, making it a highly sought-after destination for local kayakers and canoers.
The entire Gillette Castle State Park, the former estate of the famous actor William Gillette (best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes), is a local treasure. The park itself is a blend of natural splendor and architectural eccentricity, with the “medieval” stone castle overlooking the river valley. The River Campground allows a select few to extend their park experience beyond a day trip, placing them right on the banks of the mighty Connecticut River. It’s an ideal spot for an overnight stop as part of a longer paddling journey or simply a single-night retreat from the routine of daily life, offering a blend of historic proximity and raw nature.
It is important to note, however, that while the setting is idyllic, the experience is strictly primitive and has specific limitations. This is a deliberate design choice to maintain the character of the river corridor camping experience. Users should expect to embrace a rustic adventure, and preparation is key to a rewarding visit. While some visitors report an abundance of activity on the river, including loud music and boat traffic, particularly on weekends, this is the nature of camping on a busy, public waterway. Others have noted the proximity to what sounds like a gun range, which can impact the quiet enjoyment during the day. Prospective campers are advised to set expectations for a lively river environment, especially during peak season.
Location and Accessibility: A Water-Access-Only Retreat
Gillette Castle State Park River Campground is located in Lyme, Connecticut, but its accessibility is a crucial distinction. Unlike most traditional campgrounds, this site is strictly a boat-in/boat-out location. There is no vehicle access or overnight parking for campers at the actual campsite itself.
The physical address associated with the park is:
89B Ferry Rd, Lyme, CT 06371, USA
Campers must arrive and depart via non-motorized paddle craft, such as a canoe or kayak, as motorboats are typically not permitted for accessing these specific river camping sites. This restriction ensures the camping experience is reserved for those actively traveling the Connecticut River, preserving its use as an overnight stop on the Connecticut River Paddler’s Trail. Visitors who wish to tour the main castle and utilize the park’s hiking trails must do so during the normal park operating hours, and should be aware that their water-only access means they are separate from the main castle parking and visitor facilities on the upper grounds.
Services Offered at the River Campground
This is a primitive camping experience, meaning amenities are basic and designed to support short-term, self-sufficient stays. Campers must prepare to bring everything they need and practice 'Leave No Trace' principles.
Features and Highlights of the Experience
The primary draw of this location is its unique blend of history, views, and exclusive accessibility. It is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it is an immersive experience in a treasured state park.

Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Connecticut Locals
The Gillette Castle State Park River Campground is a perfect match for the adventurous and history-loving Connecticut resident. It offers an escape that is both geographically close and experientially distant from the noise of urban life. For those who already own a kayak or canoe, it provides a unique goal for a short paddling trip—a chance to sleep overnight on one of the state's most iconic waterways, under the watchful gaze of a medieval-style castle.
It's an excellent training ground for primitive camping, ideal for local families and groups who are self-sufficient and appreciate the 'Leave No Trace' ethic. Furthermore, it serves as a proud reminder of Connecticut's rich history and commitment to preserving its natural corridors. While the activity on the river may detract from total solitude, the combination of the historic castle, the scenic river, and the rare boat-in accessibility makes it a premier, one-of-a-kind micro-adventure right here in your backyard. Embrace the spirit of the river and the legacy of William Gillette—your unique overnight stay awaits!

Super nice Castle incredible woodwork definitely worth a visit
Aug 28, 2025 · JGEverything about this place seems ideal....don't be fooled. It is packed all day with people playing loud music and boats screaming up and down the river until well past dark. Plus there is a gun range or something across the river...so there's gunfire all day on the weekend. Brutal.
