Ausable River Camping - Site 072D About
For Michiganders who cherish the raw beauty of the outdoors and seek a truly immersive camping experience, Au Sable River Camping, specifically Site 072D, offers an unparalleled rustic retreat. Nestled within the vast Huron-Manistee National Forests, this designated single-family campsite provides a unique opportunity to connect with nature along the legendary Au Sable River. Unlike highly developed campgrounds, Site 072D embraces simplicity, focusing on the natural environment and the tranquility that only a genuine wilderness setting can provide.
The Au Sable River is renowned for its pristine waters, exceptional fishing, and scenic beauty, making camping along its banks a coveted experience for many Michigan outdoor enthusiasts. Site 072D, part of a series of individually designated sites spread along a 55-mile stretch of the river, exemplifies this back-to-basics approach. It's a place where the sounds of the river and the rustling leaves are your primary companions, offering a peaceful escape from the demands of modern life. While it may not offer all the amenities of a bustling campground, its charm lies in its privacy and direct connection to one of Michigan's most beloved natural resources. Many who have visited appreciate its spaciousness and seclusion, making it a perfect spot for those who truly want to unplug and enjoy the wilderness.
Au Sable River Camping - Site 072D is located at Bissonette Rd, Oscoda Township, MI 48750, USA. This places it within the broader Oscoda area, offering a blend of secluded wilderness access and proximity to local services. The Au Sable River itself meanders for 138 miles across Michigan, eventually flowing into Lake Huron, and these designated campsites are carefully positioned along its lower stretches.
Accessibility to Site 072D, and indeed many of the Au Sable River camping sites, is part of its unique character. While some sites are "paddle-in" or "walk-in," indicating a more adventurous approach, Site 072D is generally accessible by vehicle, making it convenient for carrying in gear. However, it's worth noting that the drive in can involve gravel roads with some potholes, so taking it slow is recommended. Despite being accessible by road, the individual sites are designed to offer a sense of privacy and seclusion. The campsites are located on bluffs ranging from five to 300 feet above the river's waterline. While this offers scenic views, direct river access from the site itself might be challenging due to steep or eroding slopes, as noted by past visitors. However, the presence of the Au Sable River right at your doorstep means you're perfectly positioned for various river-based activities, and there are many public access points for canoes and kayaks nearby, as well as the scenic River Road National Scenic Byway for wonderful views of the river valley.
As a rustic designated campsite within the Huron-Manistee National Forests, Au Sable River Camping - Site 072D offers foundational services geared towards a natural camping experience.
- Campsite: Site 072D is a single-family campsite, known for being "huge" and "very private," as highlighted by previous campers. It is suitable for both tents and can accommodate medium-sized campers or RVs, with some sites even featuring turnarounds for easier maneuverability.
- Firepit: Each campsite is equipped with a firepit, allowing campers to enjoy traditional campfires under the stars.
- Picnic Table: While some rustic sites might not have them, many of the Au Sable River sites generally come with a picnic table for convenient meal preparation and dining. (One review for a different site noted the absence of a table, so it's always good to verify if this is a priority).
- Vault Toilets: Basic restroom facilities in the form of vault toilets are typically available within the general area of the dispersed camping sites, although not necessarily at every individual site. It's important to be prepared for primitive facilities.
- Water Access: While the site is along the Au Sable River, direct, easy access to the water for swimming might be limited due to steep banks. However, the river offers excellent opportunities for fishing and paddling.
- Pet-Friendly: Pets are generally allowed at these sites, making it a great option for those who wish to bring their furry companions along for the adventure.
Site 072D, and the Au Sable River Camping experience as a whole, is celebrated for specific features that set it apart for those seeking a true Michigan wilderness immersion.
- Exceptional Privacy and Seclusion: A recurring highlight from campers is the immense privacy offered by Site 072D. Visitors describe it as "very private" and "isolated from everyone," which is ideal for those seeking solitude and a break from crowded environments. Its sheer size contributes to this feeling of seclusion.
- Riverside Location: Being directly on the Au Sable River means campers have immediate access to one of Michigan's premier waterways. While the view might not always be panoramic or the access steep, the presence of the river ensures opportunities for fishing, paddling, and enjoying the serene sounds of flowing water. The Au Sable River is renowned globally for its trout fishing, often referred to as "Holy Waters" in certain sections.
- Rustic and Authentic Experience: This isn't a glamping destination. It’s for those who appreciate genuine rustic camping, with minimal amenities and a focus on self-sufficiency. This authenticity is a major draw for experienced campers.
- Abundant Wildlife: The secluded nature and riverine environment make Site 072D an excellent spot for wildlife viewing and birdwatching. Campers have reported seeing various bird species, including barred owls and black-crowned night herons.
- Large Campsite: Reviews consistently mention the "huge site" that can accommodate various camping setups, offering plenty of space for tents and equipment without feeling cramped.
- Minimal Cell Service: For many, the lack of cell phone service (often reported as zero bars for some carriers, though Verizon might have some signal at other sites) is a major feature, allowing for a true digital detox and deeper connection with nature.
Au Sable River Camping - Site 072D, being part of the Huron-Manistee National Forests' dispersed camping system, typically operates on a straightforward fee structure with limited "promotions" in the commercial sense. These rustic sites are generally very affordable, with nightly rates often around $10-$25, making them an excellent value for a secluded riverside experience. Reservations are often required from May to September through platforms like recreation.gov, so it is advisable to book well in advance, especially during peak seasons, due to the popularity of these unique sites.
While there aren't traditional discounts, the cost-effectiveness of these sites is a significant "promotion" in itself for Michiganders seeking budget-friendly outdoor adventures. Any potential fee waivers or special access might be related to broader federal recreation passes (like the America the Beautiful Pass), but individual site-specific discounts are uncommon. It's always best to check the official booking platform or the Huron-Manistee National Forests' website for the most current pricing and reservation policies.
For those planning a visit to Au Sable River Camping - Site 072D or seeking more information about this unique camping opportunity, direct contact details for individual sites like 072D are not typically provided, as they are managed within the larger Huron-Manistee National Forests system.

Customer Reviews
Love camping here, slight a lot is different over the last 25 years. It’s clean, but the swimming area is nothing like it used to be.
Huge site, very private. Not a great view of the river and VERY steep (wouldn't recommend the hike down with littles) but still a great site. Easy drive in and out.
Wonderful size campsite with access to the water and a rope swing. Getting down to the water is a hike, approx 3:30 walk.
Awesome camping! Beautiful scenery! Gorgeous view of the river, and a trail connection hit to devils hole! (Devils hole is an old logging train station in the woods, but the little inlet of water at the end of the trail is very deep, so that’s how it, and the station, got its name.) Overall a great place to camp and awesome hiking!
HEADS UP- if you stay at this site the owners of the cabin across the street have been known to tell their friends and family they can dock their boats at this site and walk through this campsite...at all hours of the day and night! They also park along the campsite driveway and argue if you ask them to leave. Forest rangers have ticketed them in the past but it hasn't stopped them from bullying campers.
