For Michiganders who truly embrace the wild side of camping and seek an experience that tests their outdoor mettle, Au Sable River Camping Site 82 offers a unique and rugged adventure. Situated within the sprawling Huron-Manistee National Forests in Oscoda Township, this designated single-family campsite provides an intensely private and secluded escape along the banks of the iconic Au Sable River. Unlike the more developed campgrounds, Site 82 is designed for the seasoned camper who appreciates minimal amenities and maximum immersion in nature. It's a place where the landscape itself becomes part of the challenge and reward, offering a genuine back-to-basics experience that calls to the heart of the true wilderness enthusiast.
The Au Sable River is legendary for its pristine waters and world-class fishing, and camping directly along its course is a dream for many. Site 82, part of a series of primitive, individually designated sites, embodies this spirit of wild camping. It’s a location that promises tranquility and solitude, far removed from the sounds of traffic or neighboring campers. While it presents certain challenges, as noted by past visitors, these very aspects contribute to its appeal for those seeking a rewarding adventure. It’s a place to disconnect, to listen to the river, and to appreciate the raw, untamed beauty of Michigan’s forests.
Au Sable River Camping Site 82 is located on Old Bissonette Rd, Oscoda Township, MI 48750, USA. This places it within the wider Oscoda area, though its specific location within the Huron-Manistee National Forests means it is set apart from any immediate urban or suburban developments. The Au Sable River itself is a significant natural landmark, flowing through various counties in Michigan before emptying into Lake Huron.
Accessibility to Site 82 is by vehicle, but it’s crucial for prospective campers to understand the nature of the approach. Roads leading to these primitive sites within the National Forest can be unpaved and potentially rugged, requiring careful driving. As highlighted by reviews, the site itself is characterized by "very sandy" terrain, which can become challenging, especially on rainy days. This sandiness also extends to the path down to the water. The trek down to the Au Sable River from Site 82 is described as "very treacherous" and difficult, even for physically fit individuals in their mid-20s. It involves a "45° to 60° grade of completely loose sand," akin to "trying to climb a treadmill that's free rolling." This indicates that direct, easy river access for swimming or launching watercraft directly from the site is not feasible, and campers should be prepared for a strenuous descent and ascent if they wish to reach the water's edge at this specific point. However, the site’s location along the river still positions campers to enjoy the overall environment, with numerous public access points for canoes and kayaks further downriver or at designated launches along the scenic River Road National Scenic Byway.
As a truly rustic and primitive campsite within the Huron-Manistee National Forests, Au Sable River Camping Site 82 offers very minimal services, focusing on providing a pure wilderness experience.

The site itself is very sandy, we packed up on a rainy day and everything we had at the site was muddy sand, it got everywhere. The trek down to the water was very treacherous and was difficult even for our group of mid 20s campers. It's about a 45° to 60° grade of completely loose sand. It's like trying to climb a treadmill that's free rolling. No bathrooms, power, but 2-3 bars of service on the peak of the site
