New Prospect Campground About

For those of us in Mississippi seeking a connection to history, community, and a peaceful escape, New Prospect Campground in Vancleave offers a unique and deeply rooted experience. More than just a typical campground, this historic site has been a cornerstone of spiritual and social gathering for over a century, particularly for the United Methodist community. If you're curious about a place with a rich past and a strong sense of fellowship, then New Prospect Campground is certainly worth exploring.

New Prospect Campground stands as a testament to enduring traditions and community spirit. Established in the mid-1800s as part of the broader "camp meeting" movement, it provided a vital hub for religious revival and social connection in a time when churches and schools were sparse. Families would travel from afar, set up tents, and gather for days of worship, fellowship, and shared meals. This tradition continues to this day with annual camp meetings that bring together generations of families and friends. While some modern campgrounds focus purely on recreational amenities, New Prospect offers a distinctive atmosphere centered around its historical significance and the profound sense of community it fosters. Guests often highlight the warm and welcoming nature of the "camp meeting folks," describing a truly wonderful time of fellowship where "truly He was in our midst." It's a place where tradition meets heartfelt connection, creating an experience that resonates deeply with those who value community and spiritual reflection. It's important to note, however, that while the overall sentiment from many long-time attendees is positive, some reviews, particularly concerning accessibility and maintenance, suggest areas where the campground might be improving its facilities. These aspects, while noted, should be considered within the larger context of a historic, community-focused venue.

Location and Accessibility

New Prospect Campground is situated at Campground Rd Central, Vancleave, MS 39565, USA. This location, while providing a sense of removal from the immediate hustle and bustle, is deeply embedded in the local Vancleave community. For those traveling by car, the campground is located north of Vancleave, typically accessed off Mississippi 57. While not directly adjacent to a major interstate like I-10, its position within Vancleave makes it a familiar landmark for locals and those accustomed to navigating the more rural routes of Jackson County. The nature of the road leading to the campground, "Campground Rd Central," itself suggests its historical purpose as a dedicated pathway to this long-standing gathering place. Visitors should anticipate a serene, less commercialized approach, aligning with the campground's traditional and community-oriented atmosphere. It’s the kind of location that feels distinctly Mississippian, inviting visitors to slow down and embrace the local landscape and traditions.

Services Offered

Based on the available information and the historical context of New Prospect Campground, the primary services offered are centered around its traditional role as a camp meeting venue and a place for community and spiritual gatherings.

  • Tent camping sites: Historically, families have set up "tents" (which can range from traditional canvas to more permanent structures) for extended stays during camp meetings.
  • Communal gathering spaces: The central tabernacle serves as a focal point for worship services and community fellowship.
  • Opportunities for spiritual reflection and worship: Regular services and gatherings are a core aspect of the campground's offering, particularly during its annual camp meetings.
  • Fellowship opportunities: A strong emphasis on community interaction, shared meals, and socializing among attendees.
  • Parking: Facilities for vehicles for attendees.

It is important to note that while some traditional campgrounds offer extensive amenities like full RV hookups, modern bathhouses, or recreational facilities like pools and playgrounds, New Prospect's primary function historically has been as a spiritual and communal gathering place. Therefore, visitors should manage expectations regarding typical campground amenities and focus on the unique historical and fellowship experience it provides.

Features / Highlights

New Prospect Campground offers a distinct set of features and highlights that set it apart, particularly for those interested in its historical and community-focused appeal:

  • Historic Significance: Being in its 140th year of annual religious revivals (as of 2020 information), it stands as one of the few remaining Methodist campgrounds from the 19th-century "camp meeting" movement in Mississippi.
  • Annual Camp Meetings: These week-long revivals are a major draw, featuring daily worship services, special music, and opportunities for deep spiritual connection and fellowship.
  • Strong Sense of Community and Fellowship: Visitors consistently praise the welcoming nature of the "camp meeting folks" and the warm atmosphere of shared experience.
  • Traditional Atmosphere: The campground retains an "old-fashioned" charm, providing a glimpse into historical camping and communal living.
  • Central Tabernacle: A historic structure that serves as the heart of the campground's spiritual activities.
  • Family Gatherings: Many families have a long history with the campground, returning year after year, with descendants of original tent holders still participating.
  • Peaceful Setting: Tucked away from city lights, it offers a quiet and natural environment conducive to reflection and relaxation.

While the feedback notes a positive communal experience, it's also important to acknowledge customer observations regarding some aspects of the physical facilities, specifically mention of "structural damage all over and there were wasps nests in multiple buildings." Additionally, concerns were raised about the venue not being "special needs friendly" during a VBS event and a lack of intervention regarding bullying. These points highlight that while the spirit and community are strong, visitors should be aware that the facilities of a historic campground may present certain limitations compared to more modern, purpose-built venues. This information is provided to ensure a balanced perspective for potential visitors.

Promotions or Special Offers

New Prospect Campground, given its historical and religious focus, does not typically engage in commercial promotions or special offers in the way a recreational campground might. Its "offerings" are more about the unique spiritual and communal experience it provides. The annual camp meetings themselves could be considered the primary "special event," drawing attendees through tradition and word-of-mouth rather than advertised discounts. Costs, if any, for participation in camp meetings or for maintaining "tents" (often long-standing family structures) are usually related to the operational upkeep of the historic grounds and the continuation of the spiritual gatherings, rather than a commercial rental fee. For information on how to participate in their events, particularly the annual camp meeting, or any contributions for the upkeep of the grounds, direct inquiry through the contact information would be the most appropriate approach. The value here lies in the intangible benefits of community, history, and spiritual renewal.

We went for VBS last year and Google is reminding me to review the place. I can’t really say much more for the place since we only went for one day (this is more about the VBS than the venue), they weren’t really special needs friendly and they did nothing about the kids bullying my son but thank God I overheard it. It did seem like there was a lot of structural damage all over and there were wasps nests in multiple buildings. I hope this helps especially if someone else with special needs is thinking of going to VBS there.
