Promotions or Special Offers
As a part of the Shawnee National Forest, Pennant Bar Openland operates under the guidelines of the U.S. Forest Service, which typically does not offer commercial "promotions or special offers" in the traditional sense like private campgrounds. Instead, its primary "offer" is free dispersed camping available year-round, subject to specific regulations regarding stay limits (up to 14 continuous days), waste management (pack it in, pack it out), and fire safety (burning only dead and downed wood, ensuring fires are completely out).
The value for Illinois locals lies in the cost-free access to a significant natural resource. There are no camping fees, which makes it an incredibly affordable option for extended stays in a pristine wilderness environment. Any "special offers" would typically come in the form of seasonal recreational opportunities provided by the forest service, such as specific hunting seasons or educational programs, rather than financial discounts on services. Visitors should always consult the official Shawnee National Forest website or contact the Hidden Springs Ranger District at (618) 658-2111 for the most up-to-date information on any alerts, warnings, or specific recreational opportunities available within Pennant Bar Openland and the wider forest. While there aren't coupon codes or loyalty programs, the inherent offer of free access to such a beautiful natural area is a significant benefit to Illinois residents.

Thank you for your efforts to make this place welcoming for us eclipse nomads. Love watching the red winged blackbirds and the clouds roll out. One of the best nights of star gazing I’ve had in years. My daughter saw her first shooting star.
Apr 09, 2024 · Michael Taylor2024 eclipse 🌙 we had the perfect campsite next to the ponds and can’t wait to come fishing 🎣 so many bass out there!
Apr 09, 2024 · Amelia FeltonThis looks good in pics, but it is definitely 4x4 pickup and tic country. We walked about 5 minutes and we were covered in tics. Three of us removed about thirty tics plus what the dog brought home. The ponds aren't all that accessible and pretty shallow. They are surrounded by tall grass and bushes. There are a few big deep pot/mud holes from trucks you will get stuck in.
