For those of us in Iowa who love hitting the open road in our RVs, finding a welcoming, convenient, and affordable place to park is always a top priority. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway, passing through on a longer journey, or need a secure spot for your RV during the off-season, Iowa has a surprising number of hidden gems. Today, we're putting the spotlight on Porth's RV Park & Storage, a local establishment in Calamus that’s been gaining positive attention from fellow RV enthusiasts. This article is written with you, our Iowa neighbors, in mind, to give you a clear and factual overview of what makes Porth's RV Park a consideration for your next adventure.

Iowa, with its rolling farmlands, charming small towns, and scenic byways, offers a unique RVing experience. From exploring state parks to visiting local attractions, having a comfortable home base is essential. Porth's RV Park aims to provide just that – a straightforward, no-frills, yet highly accommodating environment for RVers. Let's delve into the specifics of what you can expect when you choose to stay or store your vehicle at Porth's RV Park & Storage.

Location and Accessibility

Porth's RV Park & Storage is strategically situated at 101 Grove St, Calamus, IA 52729, USA. Calamus is a small, rural town in Clinton County, Iowa, offering that quiet, laid-back atmosphere many RVers seek. Its location provides excellent accessibility for those traveling on major routes in Eastern Iowa. Specifically, it's just off Highway 30, a key east-west artery across the state. This makes it a convenient stopover for travelers, as well as an easy weekend destination for Iowans living in nearby cities.

For those coming from larger urban centers, Porth's RV Park is approximately 25 miles from Davenport, 51 minutes from Cedar Rapids, and about an hour's drive from Iowa City. Its rural setting means less traffic and a more relaxed pace, allowing you to quickly transition into your vacation mindset. The address, 101 Grove Street, places it at the south end of Calamus, divided by the city street (1st & Grove), indicating it's integrated within the town but still offers a sense of open space, often bordered by farm fields to the south. This blend of in-town convenience and rural tranquility is a definite plus for many RVers.

Services Offered

Porth's RV Park & Storage focuses on providing essential services that cater directly to the needs of RV owners. According to customer reviews, the park is well-equipped with fundamental hookups, which is often the most important feature for an overnight or short-term stay. The primary services include:

  • Full Hookups: This is a significant advantage, as it means each site provides water, electricity (including 50 amp hookups, catering to larger rigs), and sewer connections. This eliminates the need for frequent trips to a dump station and ensures a comfortable stay.
  • Sanitary Dump Station: For those sites not directly connected or for transient visitors, a central dump station is available.
  • RV Storage: Beyond just temporary stays, Porth's also offers storage solutions for RVs, which is a valuable service for local owners who might not have adequate space at home.
  • Gravel Pads: Sites are typically gravel pads, ensuring a stable and level surface for your RV, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Firewood: Available on-site, often with a donation suggested, allowing guests to enjoy traditional campfire experiences.
  • Tables: Each site typically includes a picnic table for outdoor dining and relaxation.

While reviews highlight the excellent price point for these services, they also mention the absence of grass at some sites, suggesting a more utilitarian setup rather than a lush, landscaped park. However, for many, the practical full hookups at an unbeatable price outweigh aesthetic considerations.

Features / Highlights

What truly makes Porth's RV Park & Storage stand out, according to those who have experienced it, are its unique charm and the little details that enhance a stay. These highlights include:

  • Unbeatable Price: Multiple reviews emphasize the nightly rate of $25 (or $20 in older reviews), making it an incredibly affordable option for full hookups, which is a significant draw for budget-conscious travelers.
  • Friendly and Attentive Owners: Visitors consistently praise the "nice owners" and mention that the "owner stops by to chat in evening or morning before leaving," creating a welcoming and personal atmosphere that makes guests feel valued. This personal touch is a rare and highly appreciated feature.
  • Walking Distance to a Local Bar ("Bucks!"): For those who enjoy a social evening or a casual drink, the proximity to a local bar is a definite perk, adding a layer of convenience and local flavor to the stay.
  • Train Views: A unique highlight mentioned by a reviewer is having a "nice view of a train that goes by." For train enthusiasts, this can be an unexpected and enjoyable feature.
  • Wildlife Sightings: The presence of "swans" in a nearby field suggests opportunities for nature observation, adding a peaceful element to the rural setting.
  • Proximity to Local Amenities: Calamus offers a small-town experience, including a local pub and restaurant with "great pizza," and even a local golf club with a restaurant open on weekends, providing convenient options for dining and recreation without having to travel far.
  • Adjacent to Farm Fields: The location next to farm fields provides a classic Iowa rural backdrop, offering tranquility and open views.
  • Nearby City Park: The RV park is near a city park, potentially offering additional recreational opportunities like playgrounds for families.
  • Close to Wapsipinicon River: For those interested in outdoor activities, the Wapsipinicon River is a few miles away, offering fishing and paddling opportunities.

These features paint a picture of a straightforward, friendly park that offers excellent value and a genuine small-town Iowa experience.

Promotions or Special Offers

Based on the available public information and customer reviews, Porth's RV Park & Storage does not widely advertise specific promotions or special offers. The primary "promotion" appears to be its consistently low and competitive nightly rate for full hookups, which is a significant draw in itself. Many RV parks offer seasonal discounts, weekly or monthly rates, or loyalty programs. However, for Porth's, the everyday low price seems to be the main incentive.

For individuals interested in long-term RV storage or extended stays, it would be highly advisable to contact the park directly to inquire about any potential long-term rates or current deals. Given the owner's friendly and personal approach, direct communication is likely the best way to uncover any unadvertised specials.

Full hook-up. Can't beat the price of $25 per night. Nice owners. Missing grass. The field nearby had swans. 😀 We had a nice view of a train that goes by. I like trains. 😀

Nice couple owns and runs this park. They are very helpful. Park is located near the school, where a softball tournament was going on during our stay. Site had plenty of space for slides and plenty of room for our big fifth wheel trailer. Large grass area to play on, and a nearby city park with playground. Enjoyed the high concentration of fireflies this time of year. Especially appreciated the use of our Passport America membership. Be aware the site is close to heavily used train tracks, with freight trains passing by at all hours of the day and night. This is the ONLY reason I did not give the highest rating for this RV park. Had to catch up on sleep after we left. I suppose a pair of earplugs would have solved most of the issue. It should be illegal for trains to blare their horns in populated towns in the middle of the night! There are already working crossing signals.

If you're looking for a nice pace to camp, this isn't it. It's a couple of gravel parking lots. However, they're level, have full hook-ups, good water pressure, and decent shade. I get the clientele out here are mostly transient construction workers, which is fine I used to do the same thing. Expect some loud music late at night, some mild drunken shouting. The owner of the park is great and got us in last minute when we couldn't get a spot anywhere else. Stayed for about a week while conducting some business in a nearby town, would come back if I needed to, just wouldn't be my first choice.

So happy we found this park last fall! My husband was working nearby, and the owners were kind enough to keep the park open an extra month for us to stay. Locals are very welcoming, we were invited to the local hangout Steffan's Tap, just around the corner, be sure to check it out! Self service check in, water, sewer, and 30 or 50 amp hook ups, gravel parking area was easy to level, plus there is a nice grass field at the back of the park which our dogs loved. Ear plugs are a must if you're a light sleeper, the train traffic is loud. Few local services, but nearby Dewitt has a grocery store, restaurants, library with free wifi, and Westbrook city park has walking trails, off leash dog areas, and playgrounds.
